Title: Various mods
Post by: Klaustrophobia on January 31, 2010, 08:12:10 pm
Having recently installed FSO, i've now completed replaying FS2 retail with mediavps, fsport, and ST:R.  now i'm on to other mods included in the massive campaign pack.  Upon the recommendation of many, i am starting Blue Planet, but i wanted to ask, is there any sort of chronolgy in any of the campaigns?  like do any of them build off each other; are there any that should be played before others?

I find the Campaign List (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Narwhal's_Campaign_List) on the wiki to be a pretty good guide for this sort of thing.

Fan made campaigns are often not related to each other storywise

Yeah, most campaigns are in their own continuity (That's why I like Narwhal's List, it groups those that build on each other together).
You're probably going to see references to some of the big campaigns, but it's not that usual.

Start with FSPort, then Silent Threat Reborn, then FS2. After that it's all fair game.

Play FSPort, Silent Threat Reborn, and FS2.

Then play (in whatever order) Transcend, Derelict, and Blue Planet. Those are the best of the fan-made bunch right now.

The next-greatest (and not far behind) are The Procyon Insurgency, Windmills, Sync, Homesick. Inferno R1, the ASW demo, and the TVWP Project demo are very much worth checking out.

Your mileage may vary, but stick to this list and you can't go far wrong.

When it comes to total conversions, The Babylon Project and the Beyond the Red Line demos are can't-miss stuff.

total conversions are last on my list at this point, unless BTRL gets a full release (which from what i can gather is rather unlikely).  i have to aquaint myself with the babylon 5 universe before that one will interest me terribly.

I just completed blue planet.     extremely well-delivered and intense storyline.  only thing missing is voiceacting, once that is done it will be damn near perfect (and in need of a sequel :D)

Spoiler:
i just wish we got to see the superjuggernauts duke it out

Pick whatever catches your fancy from the campaign list.

As with everything, Your Mileage May Vary, so the campaigns someone adores might suck for you and vice-versa.

Transcend, Derilict and Blue Planet have the biggest following and fanboys, but I wouldn't call them the best personally.

Voice acting is actually 99% done (release in a few weeks or a month or so) and there's a sequel in the works.

I do think this is worth emphasizing. One of the great things about having so many mods is that you can probably find something that suits your tastes. No one campaign is for everybody.

Are you sure? :) I played through a couple of Babylon Project campaigns before I watched a single episode of B5, and I felt like I was able to understand everything well enough to get along. Some of the campaigns are really, really good, and the flight/fight dynamic is a fun change from vanilla Freespace. In fact, once you get used to having glide & sidethrust available, it's really annoying to go back to not having them anymore. :) If/when you do check out TBP, make especially sure you play Raider Wars and the Fortune Hunters series. Fortune Hunters, in particular, is far too good of a campaign to miss just because it runs on a total conversion instead of "regular" FS2.

Ditto. I played The Babylon Project first and watched the TV series inspired by the game.

Same.  Playing the Fortune Hunters campaigns got me interested in B5.

Someone needs to sticky one of those threads. They're popping up on a regular basis.

Of course, fresh campaigns also pop up on a regular basis, so it kind of makes sense to have a fresh one of these every few months. ;)

It could be worse... in the Mount & Blade forums, threads of this type appear several times a week.

Don't forget Destiny of Peace. I loved that little campaign in its original format and the new, voice-acted one.
And definitively give TVWP a try. In my humble opinion, every byte of that download is worth it.

How do you dare... :p

Great news. Is the voice acting going to be packaged on a separate, donwloadable vp (a patch)?

---

On a side note, I never liked Procyon Insurgency myself, and never completed it. It irritated the hell out of me. I had strange bugs with the events on almost every mission. Since it is stated it has been heavily playtested, I guess my download was corrupted, but I downloaded it at least twice.
Well, still far better than anything I can do with FRED.

No. The voice acted version of BP will NOT be a patch but a complete re-release. You will have to download it in its entirety, as it contains data that will be needed for WiH.

Same here. I'm stuck with Hulu-ing it, but it's pretty good for a 90's series. What I really would like to find to watch in detail would be "Crusade," which I've seen in part only. I recall that was very well put together if memory serves me well.

Trust me though it is worth it. War in Heaven is among the most heart-pumping campaigns I've played yet.
