Particles. At least I'll do those things with it.

Looks like a simple face-based object explosion to me... :)'

This one isn't useing any particles....I belevie that 3DS max has bomb button to do such things. Not sure though

Darkage is right, that's the bomb tool. you link it to an object, you can set the size of the chunks, the strenght of the explosion, speed of rotation of the debris and stuff like that, and depending on where the bomb is placed, the thing will blow up accordingly: in that case, the bomb is right in the middle of the ship.
-
But if you use a particle array with a particle bomb and some more super sprays to add smaller particles, you can get better results. ;)

That's what I'm sain' here.

Bomb button, eh? I gotta get me one of those. :D
-
Pfff. That's nothing. I can do ablative armour.......well, I will be able to as soon as I can get the damn video-post to work right.
-
mmh? so you can't now. so shut up ;7
-
I can but it looks sub-par........Actually if I can get ahold of a copy of Flash I could make some armour pretty easily.

for spire I think he means ( nah, i won't call it spirit. No. No, don't insist, I say no. Spire sounds better. No )

its actually a Particle Array, a very flexible object-based particle emitter.
not a patch on sandblaster or Thinking Paricles...or even matterwaves for that matter.
The biggest problem being the chunks look all triangly...if you want a really good explosion you'll have to model the chunks yourself :(
Or failing that do what I do....loadsa glow, lodas lensflare and so much motion blur you cant tell what anything is.

you can also tesselate a lot, with edge tension of 0, give the chunks a big value, and watch your computer suffer :p

well...mine wouldnt' ;)
But seriously, the problem with tesselate and all systems based on random wilds guesses..oops...heuristics is that they generate 'orrible triangly or rectangly shapes which dont look like they've been ripped apart by a 50 kiloton explosion.
So you're left with trying to trick everyone into thinking something else. Either way..tesselating is possibly worse because OK you can now do that jagged outline, but because its made out of rectangles it will look like a really rubbish 3D bitmap :(
You can't win.
-
well, giving the mesh a noise modifier when it blows up could make the job. you'll have little bits of undetermined shape flying all over the place :) you can also melt or anything like that.
