Hi!
recently started to model again :nervous: so I decided to redesign my ever first model, the Newet. (a vasudan anti fighter cruiser/frigate).
keep in mind I have only just started on it today so it's very unfinished.

Welcome back, Oddgrim. That's a great start! :) I love it.
There's nothing bad in that cruiser, I'd love to see more details on it :drevil:
-
thanks shiv! :)
and heres a shot from behind:

Hope this will be constructive: Make the engines much bigger. Now they look kinda small. It doesn't seem this ship could move with such small engines.
-
I disagree. Maybe some trailing fins around the exhausts would help define them but there's no way of knowing how far back into the hull the drives go.
-
Ooh. Cool, we need more high quality Vasudan stuff.
-
I don't think it looks very Vasudan but it does look great.
-
Oooo very flash! :p
It does look like it has some Vasudan aspects, but do you know what it closely resembles the most?
The Liir from Sword of the Stars by Kerberos Productions. As aquatic creatures, many of the curves, as well as those eye looking things up front and the tail fins on this cruiser are dominant features of the Liir.
So far, it looks terrific. Keep this one up.
-
With the right textures I think it could look FS1 era (the head reminds me vaguely of the Horus, and it's overall not as "smooth" as the FS2 era stuff).
I actually kind of like it. I also agree; we need more high-quality Zod stuff.
-
The older Newet looks considerably more (FS2) Vasudan than this one.

not really in my opinion, the old model is hardly better then a few blocks clobbed together by cavemen, then giveing it a hasty tile texturing. :p
What made that model more vasudan is the texture choice and not the actually the model itself.
But I do however agree it doesn't look much now hence the it's a wip :p
-
nice

I think the problem is the thick plates are too thick.
on the engines I would be tempted to make them follow the outline of the hull
-
Again i'd reserve judgement til you see texturing.
-
Microlucifer?!
-
The bottom (floor reflection) looks kinda Sobek style. However the normal view make it somehow less vasudan :/
-
Sweet. I loved the original newet.
-
Love the front, hate the end.
-
I like the bottom of the front, but the insets are too jagged IMO... I think a nested plating look would suit it better. And the rear seems to lack substance... although it is a tad like that structure on the rear of the Satis.
Got any reference pics of the 'original'?
-
Oh come on, this isn't Vasudan, like starwolf said it's Liirian. Or at least it could be without the plates and with a proper blue and gray paint job. Either way its still a ship crewed by fish-faces.
-
She turned me into a newt!
:nervous:
...sorry.

The Steelsingers are ready, Elder!
-
Awww gawd no.
I didn't say it look Liirian like it ws a bad thing. More to the point, using the style makes this WIP a rather unique design for the FS universe.
Seriously, it looks great. Can't wait to see more.
-
woa a lot of interesting comments here, thanks for input :)
but since the last update I've thinned the armor plates and done some mechanic geebles in the front it's loosely based on the beam3.dds texture as reference.

looking good, keep up the good work
-
Those details could probably be done better with normal maps. Maybe use those details to bake it into the normal map instead of having them as actual geometry.
-
Of course, you could always keep the very high detail model as a cutscene-grade model. I've wanted to see more models like that for a while.
-
Could this be a corvette instead? There aren't enough Vasudan corvettes around ( I know only 1 decent custom made Zod corvette, and even that one needs converting ). While there's plenty of Vasudan cruisers.
-
Which is that one that needs converting?

good idea I'll focus more on normal maps instead of geebles.

I could make two versions of the same ship a cruiser and up gunned corvette version. (guns and detail textures scaled with size) :)
Update: about 99% done with the mesh of the ship doing uv mapping and cleaning.
return of the tri-flak cannons. :p

i like
-
That looks great.
I wish there was a way to include this Vasudan warship into WiH, but it's rather unlikely that Vasudans will want to engage in a war for the Terran homeworld (though I don't know for sure, I'm a texturer, not a FREDer).
-
Looking good so far (mostly the front part)
Liking the tri turrets
-
Turrets don't support having multiple axes around which to rotate separate turret arms, so you'll have to cheat a bit to get them working correctly. In theory, this should work! (However it will have slight problems when at minimum elevation, due to the angles - the Secondarm01 won't quite point down the same axis as Turret01-arm.)

-
Amazing :D
I would so love to see this complete. In fact, I'd love it even more to be able to use it in my Cerberus Campaign, so I can get rid of that damned Sobek.
Keep it up!

Won't all the firepoints be exclusively attached to turret01-arm though?
-
They would, yeah - but the offset from the tip of the third barrel wouldn't really be noticable at minimum/maximum elevations. :)
-
I like those fancy details you're throwing at us, Oddgrim
-
it's loosely based on the beam3.dds texture as reference.
That's from the Mjolnir, isn't it?

maybe but it's used on vasudan ships as well, correct me if I'm wrong but I think the sobek uses it on some parts.
edit:
anyway the machinery doesn't resemble much to that texture anymore. :)

Oh! Love it :D
-
Keep going! There aren't all that many Zod ships in the library anyways- more is always good. :D

Out of curiousity, have you thought of a name for this thing? ;7

Newet (nut)
From wikipedia: In the Ennead of Egyptian mythology, Nut (alternatively spelled Nuit, Newet, and Neuth) was the goddess of the sky.[2] Her name is translated to mean Night and she is considered one of the oldest deities among the Egyptian pantheon,[3] with her origins being found on the creation story of Heliopolis. She was originally the goddess of the nighttime sky, but eventually became referred to as simply the sky goddess. Her headdress was the hieroglyphic of part of her name, a pot, which may also symbolize the uterus. The ancient Egyptians said that every woman was a nutrit, a little goddess. Mostly depicted in human form, Nut was also sometimes depicted in the form of a cow whose great body formed the sky and heavens, a sycamore tree, or as a giant sow, suckling many piglets (representing the stars).
Thinking it was originally a anti fighter oriented platform I thought it was fitting that she would be named after a Egyptian sky goddess.
-
Wouldn't that be Nuit then? I've never seen Newet used as that spelling.
-
Ya, Newet has already been taken. Tough luck :P
-
There're about three Aegirs on the wiki alone. Reusing names never hurt anyone :)

He made the other Newet. lol.
-
Looking great. Wuvs.
-
'nother update, spending a lot of time painting machinery textures, mapping the turret and fixing on main mesh.. think I've somewhat nailed the right color for the plates.

-
Man - that is the sex. Keep it up :D
-
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..
Now that is pleasing to the eye.
-
Is that... a windsheild?
Awesome job by the way.
-
Oooo I'm loving this. :p
When can we expect a release?
-

at the front? think it's supposed to be the command bridge, just leaving it black for light maps :pOooo I'm loving this. :p
When can we expect a release?
when it's done, which could be next week, month or in three months I have no idea :p
-
In the future, after you've finished and released, would you mind if I asked permission to appropriate your Tri-Turret for inclusion in TTP [The Turret Project-(TM)]?
:D

:D
Sure why not :)
Not much of an update this time: Had to clean the main hull, uvmap the rest and added machinery mesh on the sides and on the engine areas. mind still have much to do on front textures and on the plates. :o
(http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/4225/wip07.jpg)
Also did the final changes on the tri turret and started to do the textures. (fun part! :P)

Looks great!

Absolutely amazing :D
-
Oddgrim, you are a true genius of modding.
-
A nude perfection!
-
A nude perfection!
I didn't know it was naked! :eek2:
:P
ohai update:
When working I had to spilt the main uv map into 4 maps to preserve quality while painting it.
Figures it needs that much plus space for debries.
Made beam and a simple single part turret. ( textures only half done so far :o) Will use the beam turret for beam cannons and the single part for anti fighter beams.

nice design on the beam turret.

Kneel before Zod or quake before His cruisers!

Should be on the texture somewhere
-
Would it be possible to make the multipart turrets a little bigger? They seem kinda small considering it's a cruiser...
-
The cruiser's nice. I admit it but>

Turrets are looking good

AWESOME turrets
How much further to go on your masterpiece?
-
Any news Oddgrim? The extreme lack of quality Vasudan mods out there guarantees I'm not going to let this thread sink into obscurity :D
-
well gotten some progress on it , not stopped working on it yet but kinda stamped in more pressing work at the moment so it's on hold until I get more free time. :blah:
-
*bump*
well a word or two become I post more screens.. work of late has been shafted. During a most tragic mishap I lost all the original texture files for the ship.
on the bight side it gave me more time to examine the mesh again and but I found it.. lacking rather started to hate it.(wierd how it works)
guess it's been too long since I stopped working on it. A lot of the mesh work didn't make sense any more.. this and that I can do better ect ect...After 8-10 hours of work it was radically different from the original model but this time I'll make more backups so what happened before won't happen again.
the new front:

Baby hatties belly =
Meaner grill =
Losing the tetures = :hopping:
-
Some quality work you got there sir.
-
So, if Hatshepsut was a woman who donned a beard, and this thing has a belly that looks like a baby Hatshepsut, does that make Dekker a pedo?
Just kidding.
Nice greebles.
-
Waaaw. It looks fackin awesaem!
-
Hm... that's nice. I was never much of a fan of the old textures, they were too... bland and two-dimensional. I wonder how something more like the Typhon, Aten, or Hatshepsut (ragingloli'z textures for his high poly model, anyway. The original texture job was a tiled mess) would look on it.
-
Those details are going to be baked onto the normal map rather than left as geometry right?
-
Nice model
Like the Ribbing, reminds me of BSG.
