Title: Friends on the internet?
Post by: Titan on February 15, 2010, 02:27:54 pm
Just so you know, read 'relationship' as anyway you want.

I say yes, although meeting people in person is a much richer experience.  I don't feel as close to my online friends as I do to those I've met in person.  It's just not the same.

I voted yes, but if I could select 2, my second would be "Screw you, Titan!"

Nope.
You can be all you want on the internet.
You can surely get some imaginary friends, who seem to be like heroes when actually they're basement dwellers (and talk to dworfs)

sure.  i'm a member of another forum where everyone is extrememly close-knit.  i would call them my friends.  i haven't met any of them in person as of yet, mainly because we are all over the country.  some of them who live closer, or happened to be traveling through, have met/do meet frequently.

I'm a lot better at making internet friends than IRL friends. Which, considering what many of you lot think of me... is pretty sad.

I'm better at internet friends, since I can think about what I'm going to say before I stick my foot in my mouth.

I've made quite a few friends online, many of whom I've now met in person too.  One of the guys I used to ladder with showed me all over Ottawa while I was stuck there this summer.

Most definately for net friends!

It is odd though - it may be hard to determine if your "friend" is in fact mutual. I try to establish friendly relationships with everyone, but you'll note few actually stick. For instace, I'd consider Daniel Grimes a good friend whom I've never met IRL (he's on the X-Plane.org forum), and I'm certain he'd consider me in a similar fashion.

Someone like Our Friend Battuta was a little tough - I consider him a great person, but most of our discussions ended up being argumentative - I usually felt like my views were looked down upon. This was very possibly not a mutual friendship.

Other people... you may have a desire to strangulate. We won't list any here.  :p

You? Hell no. You're a good kid.  :D

The fools that bother me usually don't stick around here too long.

Oh my.

I was very close with a girl who's IM details I'd got from her cousin, in fact, I've probably been closer to her than 99.9% of most women I associate with, unfortunately, I let our differences in opinion get the better of us. Something I could've fixed, but eh, you can't change the past, but you can learn from it.

As far as mates go, sure. But I think I'm better at making friends in person, there just seems to be something missing over the net, sometimes.

I voted "perhaps". It's a lot easier to make friends with people in the meatspace. Or so I feel.

/me has voted.

I went for "Maybe" after having to decide between all four options. You will not believe just how high the bar for being a friend to me in real life is. However, I've spent way too much time on HLP, to the extent that I know that I'm more than welcome here at any time of the day. This knowledge can only stem from the people who run this place, and the other people who visit it on a regular basis. If that's not friendship, it's very close.

I've mostly enjoyed coming here to either act like a moron and get blasted for it, or otherwise be a little more constructive and try to help others out. I don't think I can say this if everyone here isn't so open and friendly.

The real question is, can you have an imaginary friend over the internet? This is of vital importance to Snuffleupagus as Sesame Street enters the digital age.

Altough some walls of text I feel I know rather well. But don't illude yourself thinking I wouldn't sacrifice you anyway for the proper gains.
