Hello there, my english isnt very good (sorry for that) but i have a little Question.
I think the Subspace in the Last Mission from Freespace 1 dont look very good - or it looks creepy on my PC. (But i dont believe on an Core2Duo E6600 and ATI HD5770)
Ive made this screenshot from my Build (See Picture 1) - theres only one "Animation" of the Subspace and there are some Corner on the Rendering.
Just before a few days i have found a Picture on Hard-Light-Wiki (See Picture 2) - this looks better.
And today i have searched on google for "SCP Subspace" and "Freespace Subspace" - and found Picture 3.
Finaly i found this Video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXTSzft3Jw
- and i see there an second "Animation" - the Subspace looks more "real" (I mean the rotating "Clowds" on the border form the subspace - you became the "Flying"-Feeling)
My Configuration:
- newes FS_Open Luncher
- newest Nightly-Build 3.6.11 (linked in the Luncher)
- The Command-Line in the Luncher shows following options:
F:\Freespace SCP\fs2_open_3_6_11r-20100131_r5862.exe -mod fsport-mediavps,fsport,mediavps -spec -glow -env -mipmap -nomotiondebris -missile_lighting -normal -3dshockwave -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload
- Graphics in Luncher: OpenGL, 32bit, Trilinear TextureFilter, General-Settings "high", Use large Textures
- Graphics ingame: All of "Custom" - highest Options.
- Mod: FSPort MediaVPs v3.1.1
Can you tell me why it dont shows so much pretty as on the pictures and the video?
I hope you Guys can help me :)

Not much difference between the first two, the third one is obviously from Transcend.
Also, I wonder from which campaign the third one is, as it doesn't seem to be Transcend.

Here is the Link to the Source:

If you ask me: I think the Subspace form Original Freespace 1 without SCP or any Mod has a little "extra" - i think it looks better.
But if you tell me this Screens and Pictures are similar to yours, i will be happy :)
-
OK, if you stumble upon this thread, NFS Racer, tell us what you were playing when you took that screen.
Your subspace isn't much different than mine, except I prefer Transcend one, so I'm using it.
-
Short Answer: That's how it should look.
Long Answer: The FSU decided to replace the 'pretty' effects with more 'authentic' effects which, while being truer to the original, didn't look half as good in my opinion.
I put together this package which (I think) should revert the changes to an older MediaVPs install which IMO looked much better. Unzip the contents (using 7-zip) into the mediavps\data\effects folder.
(This might not fix your problem completely)

I think the mission is either from Sync or Homesick. It's gotta be one of those 2, I just can't remember which one had the Ester and Farae.
-
IMO, the original retail FS1 subspace is just about perfect. i don't think it should be all bright and shiny.
-
Yeah, third one is Sync. And I waaaaaaay prefer the two first than the third subspace effect - it looks like a snow tempest in a subspace tunnel o0
-
I don't know, the first two make me want to puke as I can see CORNERS.
-
I hope you've got the media.vps as well :)

You must have a better vision than I have, because the only thing I see is a cylinder...
-
Might just be the effect of the "clouds", but regardless, it makes it seem like it's a dodecagon or something rather than a cylinder. The Sync/Transcend one is clearly a cylinder, which I like.

The FSPort uses simpler subspace POF than MediaVP's and the Port MediaVP's for retail compatibility reasons. That's why there are corners visible.

Contradicting yourself? :wtf:
When I said "third one" in the first sentence I did not meant the entire screenshot, but a subspace model and textures.
All that I said was it was originally featured in Transcend and most likely taken from there.
I was a bit sleepy though and I didn't said it correctly, because in the second sentence I meant entire screenshot, not the subspace. :)

Im thankful for all answers :)
It is good to know that this Quality is still okay and on actual Media.vps
Thank you everyone ! :)

Actually on further inspection, the high-poly subspace models don't seem to be included in FSPort, for some unknown reason. This means that with the -mod fsport-mediavps,fsport,mediavps command line, the FS1 retail model will supercede the higher quality model in mediaVP's when playing FSPort.
In addition, the high-res maps for subspace noise are there, but in compressed form, which will mean even if you use the MV_Advanced which should contain the uncompressed subspace textures (and it does make a difference), they will be overrode by the compressed maps in fsport-mediavps.
:blah:
This can be manually fixed, but it involves extracting the higher quality models and maps from mediaVP's and copying them into fsport-mediavps.
Or you can dowload this file:
hq_subspace.7z (http://www.mediafire.com/?yh2jmkdaczy)
This contains the "high-poly" models for subspace (outer and inner layers) as well as the uncompressed textures if you want to use them. I recommend adding these in fsport-mediavps\data, where they will replace the lower quality versions used by the port mediaVP's. The maps aren't mandatory, but if you are using MV_Advanced, then you should IMHO use these maps in fsport-mediavps as well (otherwise you'll get reduced quality when using fsport-mediavps compared to clean mediavps).

Thanks for the File.
Do you think it is only the Wrong Command-Line ?
As i said - i have the newest Build and newest Media.VPs (got from the FSO-Java-Installer)
I am just suprised that these Files dont include this High-Res Maps.
The FSPort uses simpler subspace POF than MediaVP's and the Port MediaVP's for retail compatibility reasons.
Do you mean this is the latest and best Quality of the Subspace ? Is there a chance that it will be a newer and better Version in the upcoming Media.vps ?

No, I meant that as a result of how FSPort and fsport-mediaVP's are set up, you'll get the low quality retail subspace when you're doing everything correctly.

Well, this is the best currently available model that I know of, and the maps are closest to original but in higher colour depth and resolution than retail PCX maps, but there's always room for improvement. ;)
Making the subspace mesh even smoother could improve the impression of a space surrounding the player rather than a faceted mesh of a cylinder.

Bleh. Can you post to this effect in the FS Upgrade forum?
Between that and the Karnak caching issue, we really should release a new version of the Port MVPs. :nervous:

Moved per WhiteFox's request.
Although on further reflection, I'm not quite sure what I was referring to in the previous post. :nervous:
