So I just dug up my very old copy of FreeSpace that I haven't played since I was 7 or 8 when the game was first released. I'm now feeling very nostalgic and can't wait to play this awesome game again. I was surprised to find out the game appears (I've only flown around in training so far) to work flawlessly on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with modern hardware.
I just have a few questions. Are there are any mods or settings I can tweak to make the game look better? It would be nice to be able to play at higher resolutions, however 640x480 isn't a problem on my crt. I did a little searching and came across a tweak that improves the quality of textures with a few registry entries. Textures do indeed look better but I was just hoping there was something else I could enhance. I have the 1.06 patch and the 1.06 EAX patch installed also.
I've already looked at the FreeSpace Port for FreeSpace 2, but I've never played FreeSpace 2 and don't own a copy. However I plan on buying it from good old games after I beat FreeSpace again. What would be the best way to relive the game? If you had to choose would you suggest just playing FreeSpace or playing the port?
Thanks!

If you want a maximally nostalgic experience (including the one and original AI behaviour): FS1.
If you want higher resolutions and better graphics: FSPort.

The freespace port is really the way to go. You just aren't going to be able to improve retail FS1 visuals significantly, no matter what tweaks you may find. About the only thing FSport didn't recreate perfectly is the old-school nostalgic feeling you get from playing retail FS1 with its crap (by current standards) visuals.

Actually there are some tweaks you can do to FS1 to slightly improve the visuals. See the Freespace oracle for details.

Yea I found that and it worked. That was the texture tweak I was referring to.
