I want stories - and preferably video as well - of any brave pilot who can complete The Dragon Awakes, Forced Entry, Keepers of Hell, A Time for Heroes, and Universal Truth on Insane, both with or without Fury's 3.6.12 upgrade.
They can all be done.
-
Extra points for anyone keeping Nehru alive.
-
I kept him alive once in the original release.
-
It's more fun to let him die in this version. :p
...This has nothing to do with my tendencies (which might or might not exist) to spook my wingmen by firing at/around them.
-
He died, I loved how he sounded. That was ****ing awesome. Kudos for throwing that in there.
-
How do you even keep him alive? He self-destructed for me =(
-
~+Shift+I :P
-
Nehru does not self-destruct. It's possible to keep him alive without cheats, just ask HerraTohtori. :p
-

On Insane.
-
It may look, in the log, like he self-destructs, but that's a consequence of a workaround for an FSOpen engine quirk regarding messages played at death.
-
Herra Tohtori, I challenge you to keep Nehru alive on Insane while using at least the AI mod from 3612 feature pack.
-
Is that so? I didn't even try to save him as I thought it wasn't possible. Will have to attempt it later.
-
I guess I need to save Nehru now, he died ramming himself into the last Shivan Dragon. :wtf:
-
AAARRRRGGGHHHhhhh-<static>
-
I saved him on the older version of AoA, will try to do it now.
BTW, is it too noticeable the differences btw the Fury's custom AI pack and the retail one on AoA?
I'm on the first mission and I don't want to have to replay all again just for the sake of testing each option.
-

"Like night and day"
-
With the original AI I could only smile when they other pilots were afraid of Dragons "Oh my God DRAGONS! WERE ALL SOOO DEAD!"....
With the new AI I can understand how they feel.
I finished the mission in the asteroidfield with 14% hull.... on the 2nd difficulty setting....
And you really should leave the glidemod file in. That is just so much fun :) and against those Dragons a BIG help.
-
So I was like: "Bring it *****es, insane mode, new A.I."
Then after 5 to 8 tries I was like "Okay okay, I will admit, that may have been a bit too hard for starters, let's do hard mode"
10 to 15 tries later "Fffuuuuu-"
20 tries in medium later "*wheeze* F-finally... Eat that dragon bastards! Wooooooo..."
The biggest problem though, is that the friendly A.I. has a too high 'get away chance' setting. Resulting in them being well... nearly useless. Since they will try to out fly dragons which just results in a long train of dragons behind your team mates, pounding their tailpipes. Retail a.i. on insane makes your team mates actually DO something.
-
I use my Wingman, in such situations, as
cannonfodder...distraction for the hostile fighters. :P
I'll play the mission again via techroom, and try to save that guy.
Hm, is there some kind of payoff in later missions if you keep Nehru alive?
-
Not a thing.
This thread has become very focused on Nehru. I refer folks to the original post.
-
Sorry, my fault :nervous:
-
Wait wait wait. You mean he can survive mission 2?!?! :wtf:
-
Yep. No reason he can't.
-
Wait wait wait. You mean he can survive mission 2?!?! :wtf:
I've done it.
...on easy admittedly.
-
Huh. I first played BP in '08 and had no idea. He's ALWAYS, ALWAYS died on that mission for me. I thought it was just scripted. Then again I've always played on insane difficulty... wow I had no idea he could survive. Thought he was some random red shirt you guys just threw in so he could die in mission 2 :-p
-
Those are called "Mauve Shirts".
You get to know him, maybe even like, it seems like he will be on a team, then he dies a horrible death.
Classic trick, but Darius wrote it really well.
BTW, I flew entire AoA beta on Insane, though didn't saved Nehru.
I replayed Forced Entry so many times that I overloaded FSO texture cache and got a strange texture corruption (twice). :)
-
I actually saved him the first time, and was shocked to realize he didn't have 'plot armor' when I replayed it on a higher difficulty.
-
Nehru is indeed a Mauve Shirt. For those who don't know, a Mauve Shirt (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MauveShirt) is a form of Ascended Extra (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AscendedExtra). Too important to die for no reason, not important enough for a starring character role. He can still die, but needs more of a reason than a redshirt, and sometimes won't die at all. Important to note that he doesn't have to die.
-
...my memory must really be shot, because I don't even remember this Nehru from my original play-through. :p
-
Alpha 4 from the first couple missions.
-
Does he have more dialog past mission 2 if he survives??
-
Nope. He's not in any later mission, whether or not he survives.
-

Done TDA on Insane with the new AI now (Nehru survived, Zeta wing didn't >.>), ironic that I did it the first time I tried in a Perse, the Aurora really is a steaming pile-o-......
I'll be replaying some of those othres on insane with the new AI cuz I sorta blitzed through half the mod on hard without realising I'd reduced it.
Universal Truth however, I don't have an 'insane' I have something beyond insane, perhaps 'unpossible', xP 5-10FPS = Bad for the skillz :<
-
It's also worth noting that Nehru held up the release of AoA V2 by about a week...
-
Hmm, just did The Dragon Awakes on Insane and fraps it. Nehru died but I think I have a tactic that can easily keep him alive but I didn't want to actually use it as it's kinda "cheating". Pretty sure I can do the other ones too.
-
All tactics are permissible!
-
Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.
-
Well, I'll put up the video. I used half of the idea already (even if that much didn't work). The best way to survive a fight is not to get into a fight...
-
I've never managed to keep him alive - how is it explained how he's just...not there in the later missions if he survives? Does he transfer out or quit or something?
-
Suffered a nervous breakdown. Transferred to the GTD Orseis.
-
The Dragon Awakes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adxeiSe5VS0
Not a terribly difficult mission as long as you're flying something that can maneuver (not Aurora or Herc2). Bei is having a bad day. Shivan ambushed, failed easy missile dodges and Nehru bit the dust.
-

I was wondering about that also in the message from Admiral Bei. What kind of ship is the GTD Orseis and how can the Admiral approve of the transfer by himself? Wouldn't he have to talk with his own superiours or at least the CO of the Orseis about that first?
Anyway if the suffered a nervous breakdown, wouldn't he spend the rest of the journey on the Fortune or Solace? Either being cared for by the medical staff, or working there, since those two are the closest to a non-combatant they had along in the battlegroup.
-
Orseis is how you spell Oreistes.
-
Actually, no. The Orseis is another Destroyer in the GTVA fleet, one that is deployed far away from Sol.
-
That it wasn't a misspelled Orestes was clear form the beginning, after all it's quite hard to get someone transfered to the Orestes who's already stationed on the ship.
So my questions reamain. What class is the Orseis (Orion, Hecate, Raynor or Titan) and how can the Admiral just approve of the transfer request on his own? Or did he mean just mean he accepted it and will forward it to the correct departement once they reestablished contact with the GTVA?
-
She is probably a Hecate, and I think you are right. While Admiral Bei has approved the transfer request, it would still only take place after the 14th have finished their current mission, and only if the GTVA Personnel Bureau approves.

Isn't it dramatically obvious that this is not Fury's Insane btw =<

Yeah, I've played retail with Fury's AI and it's incredible. I'll try it out with the 3612 patches after I do it normally.

Universal Truth was too long (I forgot to check the length) so I'm splitting and reencoding right now.

Retail Insane Lieutenant Nehru Memorial Challenge Completed!
One thing I hope people will take away from this is how it's not just piloting skill that allows one to beat Insane. You can tell I'm not particularly good with all my missed shots. However, the AI of your squadmates also increase with the difficulty level and therefore you must make full use of them. Situation awareness is the key.
-
I was far more amused with the Leeroy Jenkins moment one of your squadmates had in the first part of your playthrough of Universal Truth. You know who I'm referring to. ;)
-
CR, you're the closest person I'm aware of to Fury's Insane Nehru challenge, wtb the victory music!
-
Oh wow, I feel kinda bad. Shivans toasted Nehru at first contact with the Dragons. Can't say it was unexpected, 9 Dragons against 4 Aurora's, but still. Crazy stuff though, the Dragons outturned me bad, even with my G5 at maximum settings. Drove me crazy just like back in the FS1 days. Evil new AI profiles.. =P
-
That's why you don't take Aurora, but Perseus instead.
-
That's why you don't take Aurora, but Perseus instead.
True, that's another lesson learned of course. I'll retry later on I think, I'm enjoying re-playing too much to stop and turn back. =P
-
It also helps to use gliding. That way it's easier to get the dragons into sight long enough to squeeze out a couple of shots.

Finally beat The Dragon Awakes on Fury Insane while saving Nehru.

Impressive.

Finally beat The Dragon Awakes on Fury Insane while saving Nehru.
Is that the energy transfer bug I'm seeing? :p
How do you keep the dragons into your sight like that? My fighter never seems to turn fast enough...
-
I'm the one who discovered the bug so I wouldn't use it lol. Besides, I have energy recharge pushed to the lasers not the shields. On Insane there's not enough energy to go around so I push it to the lasers and dump energy to shields manually.
As for turning, it's a combination of things. First off, I'm using 'z' to slow down and turn tighter. My turning rate is the max my fighter can do because I'm holding down the button for the turn (I mapped pitch up to a mouse button) while using mouse movement for fine control. This is already sufficient in most cases to maintain beads.
The final key is that my wingmen are all flying Herc2's. The Dragons chasing them are slowed down and thus much easier to kill. This is also the key to reducing the otherwise extreme skill required to complete the challenge.
-
See? The Herc II still has its uses... :p
By the way, what's this energy transfer bug?
-
It's a bug that only occurs when Fury's AI is being used. Basically, if you transfer energy from your shields to lasers, the lasers will get the boost but the shields do not lose any energy! Therefore, you can set your laser recharge to zero and just dump free unlimited energy from the shields into the lasers. You can even push the energy back to the shields to recharge them faster!
It seems not very many people use the shield->laser and laser->shield functions though. It was natural for me since I played Tie Fighter and X-Wing. Perhaps it's because there's no tutorial for it and the default keymapping is something stupid (scroll-lock and shift+scroll-lock). I consider it a required skill for flying Insane though.
-
Heh, I've never used that function myself, since energy comes in spades on Very Easy. It might be useful on higher difficulties, but I'm more used to shunting energy in the ETS to make my ship perform accordingly.
-
The brave souls that have passed the Nehru Memorial Challenge can now try it again using the very latest AI, part of the 3.6.12 Feature Pack update that was released a moment ago, available in the Black Market (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=68214.0) topic.
The AI is probably a bit tougher in dogfights but carries QuantumDelta's seal of approval. ;)
-
I took out Myrmidons and just ordered the rest of my wing to protect Nehru. They got a bit singed, but Nehru's dot didn't even turn red. Took a while to deal with the Dragons though. I love the line, "Could somebody help me out. Me and this Shivan need to start seeing other people."
