I recently acquired Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl as part of the THQ package I purchased on Impulse for the low, low, heavily discounted, one-time offer price of $40. Now, I have heard the vanilla game was decent, however like pretty much every moddable game out there, I have heard the mods available for it make it kick total ass. Can anyone offer some good recommendations? And yes, the game is updated to 1.05.
Oh, and as part of that package I also got all three of the Red Faction games. More money for Volition is always a good thing.

STALKER Complete will let you play the game in its original 'flavor' but with awesome new stuff.
Arsenal Mod offers new guns.
After that, try Oblivion Lost, which is a more extreme alteration than STALKER Complete but also more interesting. It incorporates the Arsenal Mod in full.

More guns is always good. Does Arsenal Mod include weaponsmiths who can repair weapons?
-
Not sure, but both Complete and Oblivion Lost should allow weapon and armor repair. (Well, at least Oblivion Lost does.)
-
Complete does as well. Just played through it with that mod installed couple of weeks ago. It really does make a huge difference compared to playing vanilla. Oblivion Lost is pretty damn good too.
-
Well, technically you can repair armor in vanilla if you know what you're doing.
I'm playing OL right now after Shadow of Pripyat, and while fun, it just makes the difficulty curve even more warped. Very hard to start, stupidly easy at the end.

I've heard people say that you should do a vanilla play-through before playing with mods. Would you guys agree?
-
I enjoyed vanilla a good deal.
However, I think STALKER Complete is close enough to preserve the atmosphere while still removing some of the irritations.
Oblivion Lost kinda has a kitchen-sink problem at times, but it also has incredible stuff like blowouts.
-
I'd certainly complete a vanilla play-through before OL.
I'm glad I played through it vanilla before modding - forced me to understand how the guns accuracy is determined.
-
Beside the beginning of SoC (when you only have a pistol) nowadays I find STALKER quite easy...
...this has a lot to do with me having played Redux. That's just as the name suggests a "less is more" mod for hardcore players. If you thought STALKER was hard, you hadn't play Redux yet.

Nonsense. COME IN, DON'T STAND THERE!

The great part about OL is that you can shoot that guy.
