Title: Shading problems (split from 3.6.10 Final Now Available!)
Post by: J Probie on March 06, 2010, 01:17:35 am
Okay rather new around here so bear with me. When I first saw this update of the 3.6.10, I figured just go for it. Funny thing is that I really didn't need to update since it was running fine, with the glaring exception of the game not running as smoothly as i had hoped especially when running from the original disc was better  :(. That's my first problem. My second problem is when I had performed the update to the new 3.6.10, deleting MV_complete and following all other instructions, I ran into a serious problem where some of the update graphics on some fighters (apollo, valkyrie, angel scout, athena) still had the default shading while others (ulysses, herc, loki, zeus, orion destroyer) were fully detailed. can someone explain to me what i should do bout this?

1. You may want to dowload and use FSO 3.6.12 RC1, since it has been known to have better performance than 3.6.10.

2. You should provide your fs2_open.log. Instructions for generating one can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359).

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps\MV_Complete.vp' with a checksum of 0x31df7754
Delete this. It will mess things up.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Boomerang_3610.vp' with a checksum of 0xc6e5afc5
Whatever this is, it does not belong in the FS2 root folder.

Code: [Select]
  OpenGL Vendor     : Intel
OpenGL Renderer   : Intel 965/963 Graphics Media Accelerator
  OpenGL Version    : 1.5.0 - Build 7.14.10.1437

For the love of kittens, GET A BETTER GPU! At the very least, delete mv_advanced.

Well.. Couple of possible issues. You have sort of mixed set of mediavps, both complete and then the separate files. You also have something called 'boomerang' in the main directory (not sure what it is, but regardless, root fs directory is not the place for mods). See what The_E wrote. And you seem to lack the mediavp files of the fs port (fsport-mediavps).

And then you have Intel IGP.

ahh the boomerang_3610.vp is part of an extension pack release from here at HLP several months back. I keep that there on the off chance that i might want to play that again. It had quite an interesting back story . If i remember correctly, the instructions were to leave the vp in the /freespace2/ folder

Apologies for the double post, but which media vps. do I seem to be missing?

Then those instructions are wrong. Since I don't know what's in it, I would recommend moving it to a new mod folder.

And you are not missing any mediavps (EXCEPT FOR THE FSPORT MEDIAVPS, obviously). In fact, you have too many of them. MV_Complete.vp needs to be deleted, as its presence will mess up the real 3.6.10 mediavps. Given your GPU, mv_advanced should also be deleted.

EDIT: Thx Wanderer, for telling me something I overlooked.

As for the original problem, you need the fsport mediavps. They can be found, oddly enough, in the fsport release thread.

 I'm still getting the same problem. nevermind the slow down, i'm just more concerned bout the shading now. what is it that i'm missing if I have everything where it's supposed to be?

For the last time, you need the fsport mediavps. If you used the automated installer, it should have installed them. If it did, you need to select them, and not the fsport in the launcher. If you installed them manually, go to the FSPort release thread (FreeSpace Conversion forum), and check if you have everything.
