Title: I dare you!
Post by: ktistai228 on March 11, 2010, 08:14:25 am
I dare you all to make the COOLEST pictures in the FreeSpace engine as you can. The only thing that matters is for it to look good.  ;7
However, there are some kinda strict rules:
-you have to have only ONE ship in the picture :(
-it has to be clearly visible and recognizable
-the ship has to have been released to the general public, and available for download :pimp:
-size limitations: throw them out the window! :D
So go ahead, use the best this engine can give, use the 3.6.12 with full capacity, use all the features you can think of, use HTL versions, make them if you want (nobody will do that but what the hell ), use whatever you want. The only thing that counts in the end is for it to make everybody say "WOW"(do not think of world of.... or you just might get shot).
The best pictures will be used by http://starships.wikia.com/wiki/Starships_Wiki (http://starships.wikia.com/wiki/Starships_Wiki) as a representative image for the ship it... uhm... well... represents.

All the good, and lets see what you can do!

FreeSpaceFreak - GTCV Deimos!
Congratulations!

You know, I'm fairly sure this doesn't constitute a dare in the traditional sense, but hey, go nuts.

I made it for Syrk campaign.

@Black Wolf and Dilmah G Not really a dare indeed, but a nice little contest in the end.
@Rodo: That.... is.... nice :eek2:  Really, great start!

*snip*

WHOA. That is beautiful. It's like Herra Tohtori's milky way galaxy skybox, except it's brighter, without sacrificing clarity.

Incidentally, "milky way galaxy" is redundant. Explanation (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=galaxy&searchmode=none)

I saw that background in ASW.

You did?.. I could sworn I finished this one two days ago so it's kinda hard for it to be on ASW.

You might have seen a similar skybox though.

I saw that background in ASW.
That specific background wasn't in ASW, but there was a galaxy alright.

Rodo: Good start, but needs more close-up :P

Here's some I did a while ago. The first two have been manually post-processed; the Deimos one is purely in-game. Except for the text, of course.

Is that Aurora screen from BP Director's Cut? that background is similar to the Sol starfield.

Edit: I wonder how long it will take to make FSO look this good

img

If ever. The detail of that ship makes FSO look like a joke. :D This detail looks as good as visually possible for human eyes unless we alter it to be true 3D and view it with 3D tv.

But I will give FSO more points for background detail.

IIRC, real shadows aren't implemented.

In other ideas... a ray-tracing gfx engine may eventually be an awesome choice. Only like $12,000 for a 4S 12-core AMD workstation (48 real cores total and ~$30-40/GB RAM). :P

We'll probably have to wait at least 10 years for that to be standard.
Perhaps, but 48+ cores in 2010 is nearly irresistible. You'd go broke putting RAM in; about $2000 for 32x2GB sticks or $5000 to fill it up with a full 32x4GB sticks.

@FreeSpaceFreak: That Ravana kicks ass..... however it is a tad bit too dark for a "representative" image, the Deimos are also nice(very possible for them to go in!), but I don't like the Aeolus. Too dark and really can't see those nice details it has. Did I mention that Ravana kicks ass? ;7
@Jeff Vader: Get me another one showing the top of the Aurora and the two are winners and go to the site!!
@High Max: Heh, if FreeSpace would look like that I wouldn't be playing it. Really, my computer barely handles 3.6.12.....

I'd like to make a small contribution, but I'm relatively new to online forums and have yet to figure out the method of adding pictures to my posts. Sorry, I know that's pretty bad....but if someone can tell me how to proceed after adding image tags, I'd really appreciate it.

Put the address of the picture between [ img ] and [ /img] (minus the spaces of course).  That should be it, unless it's a gigantic picture, in which case you really should replace img with lvlshot.

****. No can do. I took that screenshot some time ago and since then I've traded my trusty old laptop "Ruoska" to a ****ing piece of **** overheating pile of garbage. I'm struggling to keep the damn thing running, let alone trying to get normal maps working again.

If you have it on Facebook, open it up, right-click it, select "Copy image address/location" or something like that. The url to the image is now on your clipboard. Just paste it to your post and add either "img" or "lvlshot" tags around it (if you don't know how, just post the url, I can add the tags).

Or try uploading the image to Imageshack or something.

You need to upload the picture to a site like http://imageshack.us in order to get an address to copy.
Or you can use 'upload file' under 'additional options' when you click 'reply'

The lighting looks off. Try making the Uly more blue, to make it look like it actually belongs there.

Also pretty sure the lighting on the Uly is coming from it's right, while the lighting on the rocks is from the left.

Hmm..the screenshot of the Sizifus is an very old one.

Also, a lot of my ships don't have my name on it.

but a rather large and interesting collection of starships :)

@Trashman: I am sorry for that. Can you please hint me to which these ships are? As for the Sizifus, I will see what we can do.
@NeoKnight: Nice try, keep working on it:)
@Pecenipicek: I advise you to read the picture rules again. The first picture has more than one ship, and in the second the ship isn't clearly visible(half of it is missing)

It is better NeoKnight. However, I would like you to try and make a... more space-like theme(we are talking about spaceships) and try to make the ship bigger in comparison to the image size. This because I can only give 400px width to any given picture, and at 400px that ship will look.... small

Wah!?! You never said the ships had to be in space! See:  :p

I dare you all to make the COOLEST pictures in the FreeSpace engine as you can. The only thing that matters is for it to look good

Nothing was mentioned about the mandatory requirement of a space theme.

But yeah, I can definitely see why spaceships in space would be preferable to those that...aren't. Unfortunately however, the only "cool factor" I'm capable of generating for a FS pic is a terrestrial skybox, so if it's space scenes you're looking for I really can't do much besides the random pressing of the Print Screen key whilst in external view during a mission. Which I'm sure no one really wants. But hey, good luck to everyone else out there who has or will submit a picture. There's been some beautiful stuff on this thread so far and I hope to see more.

Can't you just crop it as far as you can before resorting to resizing the whole pic?
Title: Re: I dare you!
Post by: ktistai228 on March 16, 2010, 06:32:01 am
@Scourge of Aces: I can crop it, and if I have to, I will, it was just a... notice for all the others.
@NeoKnight: Well, planet pictures can go just as good as space ones, again, it was just a notice. I like your picture and it looks okey!
Well, you could do one of the next two: make the Ulysses bigger(or I can crop it, your choice here) and you could try to do something with the background (sharpen it, or something like that). Anyway, your next picture has a high change of getting in!
Title: Re: I dare you!
Post by: NeoKnight on March 17, 2010, 03:39:51 pm
To be honest, I'm not very proficient in the art of image editing (for those who didn't notice...), so I don't think I'll attempt to tamper with the background. Not til I know what I'm doing. But if anyone wants to use the image as-is or polish it up themselves, they're more than welcome to do so.

Technically, no, but it's a chance to show one ship fighting at least (given the one ship per image limit.)

Frankly, the low quality of the wiki articles is turning me off from contributing.

General Battuta, I know that the wiki isn't top notch, but I would be thankful if you could tell me what you don't like. A bit more explicit. I'm a self-learner here, so its bound to be bad. So just give me a hand by telling me what you don't like please!
Title: Re: I dare you!
Post by: General Battuta on March 18, 2010, 09:58:58 am
Well, if this is a general Starships wiki and not particularly a FreeSpace wiki, I think it's important to give out-of-universe context for the ships. Someone who doesn't know anything about FreeSpace is going to feel kind of clueless reading these articles.
