Title: Shockwaves doing A LOT more damage than intended!
Post by: uzalu on March 13, 2010, 08:43:45 am
Whenever a large ship which causes a shockwave explodes, the game crashes to desktop.

i would first like to apologise if this has been mentioned before, i did search the forums first, but found nothing about it.

This problem is likely to be down to the fact i am playing the game on a netbook with integrated graphics, (runs fine on my desktop pc) or maybe i set the game up wrong, but i have fiddled about with it a bit, and i cant fix this problem. the game runs almost 60fps normally, so i cant say there can be any problems there, that are obvious anyway...

it is happening in the first mission of the retail freespace 2 campaign. When the hatsheput destroys the belisarius. (a scene, no doubt, designed to impress FS1 players :) ) i couldn't tell exactly, but i think on one run thru, i did actually see the shockwave briefly before the crash, which would rule out my original theory of it being simply a missing texture. at this point there are a two things i can try other than this...

1. re-install
2. look into the 3d shockwave thing i briefly saw when browsing the forum earlier.

any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

You can't actually. But I moved the thread. No need to worry about it anymore.

Now, please do this:
Your fs2_open.log: (possibly the most important thing ever)
fs2_open.log is a file generated by debug builds. It contains all sorts of useful information that we need in order to help you. That is why you should follow the instructions below and provide us with that file when asking for help. Creating an fs2_open.log happens like this:
  • Download the recommended build (link is in the first post of this thread) if you haven't already and place the .exe files to your \freespace2\ folder.
  • Switch to windowed mode (open the Launcher, open the Features tab, select Dev Tools from the pulldown menu and tick on "Run in window").
  • Select the debug build (fs2_open_3_6_10d.exe) and run it. If you've been experiencing crashes, do exactly what you've done previously, up until it crashes.
If you have had other issues, it is sufficient to run it until you get to the Main Hall. If the debug build crashes fatally even before getting to the Main Hall, no worries.
Note that warnings and errors are not the same thing. Warnings are there to tell that something is a bit wrong, but not fatally wrong. You can skip warnings by clicking "No". Errors are more severe and if an error occurs, you really have to quit the game.
  • Quit the game.
  • Find the file called fs2_open.log from \freespace2\data\, copy it to a safe location and deliver it to us by using one of the following means:
    • include it to your post as an attachment (click Additional Options when posting)
    • include it to your post using the "code" tags
    • send it to pastebin (http://pastebin.org/) and provide us with the link to it

I used to have a similar problem. My game crashed whenever I saw a large explosion (the size of a Chronos). Updating my graphics drivers solved the problem.

Do as Jeff says and upload fs2_open.log so that he (and perhaps other people who can understand what's logged there) can identify the real problem and give you proper directions. Until then, bear in mind that a number of problems reported here tend to stem from misplaced and/or missing vp files, wrong command-line flags and outdated graphics drivers.

thanks for the hints, and all the advice, but it turns out i just needed to update my FSO version! i was using .6 when i shud have been using .10 i think. i also updated my video drivers. the shockwaves have been solved and so has the subsequent problem of a graphics related error message when the game started. it now runs very slowly, i dont have transparency on particle effects, and my primary weapons are invisible, but all that can be solved by fiddling around with the launcher i think.

Thanks again!

The fs2_open.log could still help. If you just follow those instructions, the game will create it. All you have to do after that is find a way to deliver it or its contents to us.

But as a wild guess, I'd say that netbook + the MediaVPs = problems.
