I and a friend of mine found a way to add 3d objects to web pages, and my big idea is to add them to StarShips. It allows you to do almost all the things you do in a normal 3d viewer, just that it can be done online. However there are a few.... slight problems:
-the models need to be in VRLM format
-no idea what the poly-count limit is
-the files have to be at least 1mb in size
-don't know how fast it will be, I've seen some basic models and worked ok, but they didn't jump 100 poly's
So my request is that somebody export a FreeSpace model to VRLM (I don't have a bloody clue how to do it) and send it to me.
Thank you very much!

"the files have to be at least 1mb in size"
:wtf:
-
I said the same thing... However it seems this is a .... requirement
-
Well, honestly, you should really make sure these things work for FS2 models before asking for them to be converted.
-
somebody export A FreeSpace model
That is why I said A FreeSpace model, I want to try it out. Even a container will do!
-
Containers won't be 1 MB in size :P

Let's see, though...
VRLM is kind of sloppy though, isn't it? I exported fighters from YS Flight sim (which exports the geometry as VRLM) only to find every single polygon was its own object and every vertex was unwelded. Thus, to get a coherent mesh, I had to isolate sections of the model (AC3D couldn't seem to make a single object out of it in that format, or even weld verticies, for that matter :shaking:) and drag a mesh over the sections I wanted to duplicate to get a coherent model. After that, I finally got a solid model...
On a separate note, does this include the model texture? If so, getting a 1MB file won't be tough at all!
-
textures included I think:)
-
VRLM or VRML? Because VRML is an ancient depreciated web standard, but 3DS Max can still export to it.
-
VRLM, so it says here

:wtf:
"VRLM" just started to sound too strange to me...
Indeed, there is no "VRLM" as far as I know. It's VRML, darnit!

A guy making a mod managed to integrate U3D models into a .PDF using something called Latex2 code and movie15. It is a damn fine PDF with a highly detailed Sharlin model, and it is only 59 kilobytes. The model in the file can even be rotated and zoomed-in on, and has some lighting support, as well as stuff like wireframes, transparency, and vertices, and even a model tree. Let me attach the file for you guys so you can check it out. Ktistai, you may be able to use this for your website. You guys will need Adobe Reader 7 or better though to open this file properly.

@Thaeris: Then I apologize, I'm running on somebody else's.... expertise :nervous:
@SpardaSon: That could work as a great alternative, if I can get textures to it. THANKS!

lol, vrml sucks. its nothing new, when i took computer science class back in the mid 90s i was modeling stuff in vrml. comes right down to it its just another ascii based model format. the idea was to create 3d web pages, but because it didnt contain any optimization data like bsp, rendering it was very slow. it required a browser plugin to view it. frankly its a waste of time.
i actually had a website with vrml versions of my models from nukemod (they were all pre-htl era ships). its probibly still up there somewhere.
*edit*
holy **** its still up (http://www.angelfire.com/ak3/nukewar/tech.htm)
may want to look at this format here

heres another one, xml based, this one looks like it has support for lua based animation and supports export formats like 3ds and obj
