Title: Mac OSX Error on Start
Post by: Gelenn on March 13, 2010, 07:30:13 pm
Hello, I am trying to run FSO 3.6.10 on Mac OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.2). To install the game I first installed FS2 on my WinXP computer, patched it to 1.2, transferred the freespace2 folder to my Mac, then placed the .MVE files in the data\movies folder as instructed. Then I used the java FSO installer to download FSO 3.6.10. I also downloaded and installed the latest OpenAL drivers for Mac OSX. Unfortunately when I start the executable file in my freespace2 folder... nothing happens. Just nothing. I tried running the debug executable, but again nothing, and no debug file appears in my data folder. I then tried installing Soulstorm's FS2 launcher for mac, and I receive the "flag file not found" error when I start using this launcher.

From previous threads it appears that this is caused by not having FS2 installed... but I definitely do, and I have double checked my FS2 directory to make sure all the VPs are in the correct spot, which they are. What am I doing wrong?

Please let me know if you need any more information from me. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I'm not really a Mac person, but... you did point the Installer to your \freespace2\ folder, right? The FSO executables (I'm not sure if there's another term on Macs) must be in \freespace2\ , the same folder where the retail .vp files are.
Screenshots of at least the \freespace2\ folder might help.

Alright, as a note, this is installed in my applications folder.

Hmm. Sizes for all .vp files seem to be a bit different than on my end. Which is curious since I have a working installation, but your .vp files seem to be bigger :wtf: . Try running FS2_Open-3.6.10 (debug). It will probably get as far as the regular build at best, but if we're lucky, it'll generate a debug log into a file called fs2_open.log. Once again I forget where they are generated on OS X, but you should be able to find it with as search function or something. If fs2_open.log exists after running the debug build, please post it or its contents here. It might contain some relevant info.

I appreciate greatly the reply, but as mentioned in the original post unfortunately no log file is generated when the debug program is run. Did a full hard drive search to make sure.

As for your "Flag file not found" error ... that's fine, since you haven't yet told the launcher what application you are running.  Just click okay, the launcher should open, and you can choose your fs2_open application at the bottom of the window (click the ... button at the bottom right corner).

Again, I appreciate the suggestion, but the "flag file not found" error appears after the application is selected.

That's something that you need to tell Soulstorm (who did the MacOS launcher). He's found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=51391.0

as mentioned in the original post unfortunately no log file is generated when the debug program is run.
Ah, sorry. My mind was wandering when I posted and I didn't notice that part.

I'm somewhat at a loss here, unfortunately. Hopefully some Mac people have an idea of what's going on.

Maybe blowfish can help you out?

I used to get that flag file error with certain builds, but not the official 3.6.10 release.  Is your Soulstorm launcher at 3.1.3?  It's possible that the installer gave you an older version, and I recall there was a point in that launcher's development where we had to manually delete some files and change the address where it looked for new updates.

My launcher is version 3.1.3, at least according to the update program. But honestly, I don't think its a problem with the launcher. The program isn't running from the application at all, so the launcher really isn't going to change things. If I ever get the program working correctly from the app and the launcher doesn't work then I'll worry about that error.

The only other relevant information I can provide is that my installation is from three old ISOs I made from my original CDs from way back when. Perhaps some of the data were corrupted when I made the ISOs and the vps aren't being recognized by the application? Does anyone think my problem may be alleviated by buying another copy of the game? $6 isn't very expensive but I don't want to spend it if I don't have to and I don't want to waste my money if I'm still going to have the problem afterward. Thoughts?

Hm. Are you patched to 1.2?

I am patched- see original post.

However, I tried the 3.1.12 RC1 Inferno build and it works perfectly, launcher included. Something must be wrong with my 3.1.10 application. I played the first tutorial mission without any crashes or bugs so as of right now my problem appears to be averted, if not solved! I'm still curious to know what was the problem so if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

Was 3.6.10 finalized before Snow Leopard came out?  I think Echelon9 was working on 10.6 compatibility not too long ago, but if those changes went into 3.6.11, that could explain why 3.6.10 builds would not be of much use to you.  Hopefully if that's the problem the newer builds won't give you any further trouble.

Ah, here's the 10.6 thread I was thinking of:
