Title: Fun little gaming IQ test
Post by: Mongoose on March 15, 2010, 02:58:31 pm
From the realm of "people who have too much free time on their hands," some DeviantArt user expended the effort to create a mash-up collage of game-related characters past and present.  It's not exactly definitive by any means, but it's fun to see how much was crammed in here.  My own IQ wasn't exactly up to snuff, though. :p

Cool. Got the games for about half of them, if not the character's name.

Holy crap, there's the little P-38 wannabe from 1942.

Holy crap. thats one of the games I grew up playing.

I remember during a week long power outage due to an icestorm, my parents let me use the last half hour of battery on the laptop playing that.

Ironicly, I can recognize a whole lot of them...even those from games I never played (or hate). This is what internet does to you....

Pac-Man.....Pitfall!.... I also see other oldies like Gods and Golden Axe, and possibly Toki. Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle....Ben from Full Throttle (probably taken from one of the cancelled sequels). Is that the Pyro from Descent 2 about half-way across the fourth strip?

I'm guessing a lot of the recent ones are from RPG and FPS games, which I don't play too often. At least I can pick out Gorden Freeman and Alyx Vance, Faith, the guys from TF2.... and maybe Duke Nukem.

Heh, I wasted some of my youth on 1942 as well.

Only recognize about a half...
I'm fine with that.

I can only recognize about 30 or so.

I know most of those characters by sight, and the names and games of a  lot of the ones I know.

Pretty cool!

But its missing Guybrush Thriftwood---- i mean 'Threepwood'

The legend that is monkey island, unless its there,

Must check for lemmings and worms!!!!!

:)

I think Guybrush is just below the mech-type thing and next to the Penny Arcade guys.... Worms near the bottom left I think... Woah, just noticed Simon the Sorceror...

Edit - ET is in there too!! It was so poor that most of the game cartridges went unsold. I heard that Atari had to bury them in a landfill in Mexico.

Edit 2 - He he, Pong. That might be the oldest game shown there.

My fanboy side is a bit disappointed that Myst didn't show up in some form (at least not that I've found yet).  Being the best-selling PC game of all time until The Sims came around should count for something, right?

And yep, the Pyro-GX does make an appearance, though I'm a bit chagrined that I didn't see it until after it was pointed out. :p

(Heh, even Freddi Fish is in there.)

They're about half-way across from the left on the fourth strip, next to the guy with the bike.

I found the pyro from Descent :D And the Galaga ship! And Grid Wars!

Uh... is there an answer sheet anywhere?

Edit 2 - He he, Pong. That might be the oldest game shown there.

Nonono... Bottom row, right of center, to the left of the sims people.

Chess is older.

Unless that's supposed to be some specific computerization of it.

Post by: lostllama on March 16, 2010, 04:18:52 pm
Good point. :) I assumed it was from a computerized version, then again perhaps not.

Ugh, my eyes are on the verge of bleeding.

Edit: Found Hobbes from WC3!! Took a while for that to click. Not sure what the origami-like thing to the right of him is from, though.

I recognized about 40 of them, although that's still only 10%. :p Some of the older game characters are very small in that picture and you have to look carefully to notice them.

Anyone see JC Denton there? I see Alex from the second game but can't find JC.

I think I can identify the Star Wars one, Superman, Spiderman, Batman and what looks like Transformers...The Hulk, Pokemon TMNT, PacMan, Astroboy, whatever that foxy-squirrel thing that was on Tazos is, Donald Duck, - where's the FreeSpace ones?

(I didn't know that I knew this many games...)

That's Nova from Starcraft: Ghost, a Starcraft spinoff that was first a stealth game, then an action game, then finally ended up being canceled.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand wallpapered!
I had seen that hi-res version before while searching in Google images, but I forgot to bookmark it. Thanks Fury.

She really looks like a former crush of mine.

Lara Croft has nice everything for a bunch of pixels...

Personally, I like big breasts, but to a healthy limit. I find gigantic, unrealistic watermelons disgusting. And Lara is just in the borderline between "rare, but naturally possible" and "WTF!!!".
I think a more comprehensive and harmonious beautyness is far more desirable in a woman than a "hot package of sexy stuff", especially when such "package" is even more arrogant and egocentric than myself.

But I guess in the end it all comes down to personal taste.

By the way, if I'm going to keep posting here I'll better make it clear than I'm not a hardcore gamer. Just wanted to point it out before I said something stupid (I only played the first Tomb Raider, so if Lara changed in the following games...).

Either way she's going to have issues fighting. :p

Have you ever seen a woman with a nice derrière wearing riding breeches? It's very similar to that image. No need for wedgies. ;)

I think I can see a Kilrathi in there. I thought it was Hobbes at first but now I'm not sure, as I only recall him wearing a blue flight suit. Might be another Kilrathi from WC4, or maybe WC: Prophecy.

In all honesty, that was my first reaction to seeing Nova when I used to frequent Blizzard's website. Hate to run into a Hydralisk in general, let alone in something like that...  :p

...For the record, I have no idea who first determined that a heroine must be scantly clad when in combat (or in general, for that matter) - in a way, this is just poor character development disguised by rather obvious marketing techniques. Thankfully, there's several examples that don't fall on this tactic, though Samus is the only one that comes to mind immediately.

Cause if they're going to have images like that, they might as well claim that ghosts can only make their bodies disappear and not clothing and say that this means they have to run around nude. :p

I repeat there's a lot of clothing that is both skin tight and elastic. Some activities (like swimming) need very tight clothing to improve performance.

And, c'mon! Just relax and enjoy the sensuality of a healthy, athletic body. ;)

True.  It's also no use trying to admonish you based on the possibility of her being an innocent little girl because 1. She is wearing a skin-tight outfit like that. 2. She is a psionic assassin capable of melting brains with her mind. 3. She has already killed a bunch of people by melting their brains with her mind. 4. She has been mind-wiped to be an obedient servant of the Terran Dominion and kill whoever Arcturus Mengsk orders her to kill.

So she's a disciplined cold-hearted assassin with astonishing, burning green eyes?

That's it. She just scored 11/10 in my scale of sex-appeal.

And most importantly...5. She's fictional. :p

Yes, we all know that. I just don't want to think about it. :hopping:

For a game that was never released, and a character that actually never did anything or appeared anywhere, Nova is pretty popular.

Too popular.

A certain degree of form-fitting improves mobility and stealth. :P

I mean sure, you don't hear your clothes rustling, but when you're dealing with alien abominations from beyond, do you really want to take the chance? :P

Wow - Arkanoid is there.

Now, how many of you have actually heard of that game, and how many of you have actually played that game?

Repton seems to be missing, as is Elite - that's a surprise, as those were much more popular than Arkanoid.

(Worms 2 is bottom-left. I have the disk in my drive right now...)

Well, I couldn't find Arknoid, but still I don't know what you're talking about. Arkanoid was quite popular, it has been ported to many platforms, and I guess everyone has played it.
I had it in my NES, and in my old cellphone. Hell! I even did a clone of it in Quickbasic.
