Title: I Keep accidentally wiping all my User Profiles
Post by: jkalltheway on March 21, 2010, 08:09:35 pm
Every time i update my Freespace 2, i always forget that fudging around with the builds can cause me issues. Especially when i haven't touched it in a while. One popular one is i update the launcher, and i usually end up deleting my User Profiles as well. This normally is less of an issue, except for the part where i have to reassign all the buttons for my keyboard set up. Sigh. Anyone have any quick fixes for this, or at the least shared experiences?

I'm honestly kind of surprised that you've managed to delete your pilot on multiple occasions.  Updating your build or the Launcher shouldn't put you anywhere near the data folder.

Yep. It's slightly astonishing.

Possibly he means that his pilot files get corrupted, and he has to delete them. Which, if he switches builds in the middle of a campaign, given the stability of the pilot code, is feasible.

Keep a 'default' one handy- one with all your preferred settings, but that you never use and therefore can never be corrupted. Cloning a pilot keeps the original's keybindings.

Although I hardly see how messing with/upgrading the launcher can screw up a pilot file.

Well, the first time it occurred, i was updating my entire freespace folder with Shivansps's 2.2. I think i reinstalled freespace that time, so i expected it to be gone. Tried to save them, failed at it. Forgive me, but old age makes my memory foggy

This time, i was upgrading to the Blue Planet Directors cut. I deleted my previous blue planet profile, and i read that i needed to upgrade to 3.6.10, and i downloaded and copy/pasted that into the folder. After i reopened Freespace 2 (blue planet mod) i noticed all my other profiles were gone as well.

...

Well, actually, that was expected, since the BP AoA DC needs an Inferno build, which by default does not even try to open pilot files created by non-Inferno builds.

Hmm... so you're telling me if i open it with the normal non inferno build all my user profiles will be back? score. I guess i'll have to reset all my keys manually again... sigh.

Take a look inside your fs2 scp directory in the data folder and then players. That's where the save files go. For mods, go into the mod folder and look for the data folder and then players.

Just for reference since it appears you may not know where the save files are actually located.

Uh, no? At least not the last time I checked (which was one minute ago). All pilot files go to \freespace2\data\players\ .
Singleplayer pilots are in \players\single\ .
Multiplayer pilots are in \players\single\ .
Singleplayer pilots created with Inferno builds seem to be in \players\single\inferno\ and I assume the same logic applies to multiplayer pilots created with Inferno builds.

I double checked at your prompting and you're correct.

Hm... could i copy my pilot files and paste them into my inferno folder?

Theoretically, yes. However, there is no absolute guarantee that the conversion from normal to Inferno pilots will be successful. It's better to start completely from scratch.
