Would it possible to add a type of momentary flash that behaves like the "sun" objects for things like bombs or capital ship deaths? Not talking white outs or anything but even in space, when a fusion bomb goes up there's usually a hell of a flash.

Already done. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=68214.0) Or check out this wiki entry (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Script_-_Flashy_Deaths_(new)).

Ok, maybe I'm not remembering it right, but why isn't this standard? IE with a flag in the game/launcher/whatever
-
this looks like it just does a screen flash, would be cool if this worked at a lightning level. if something goes off behind you, then everything in front of you should light up bright with reflected light.
-
Yes, it doesn't add lighting sources but it does add a flash whenever a ship dies.
Perhaps that could be next stage of script's evolution. Assuming scripting can do that.
-
I remember one of WMC's builds had scripted lighting.
-
scripting doesn't have any control over lighting at the moment.
I remember one of WMC's builds had scripted lighting.
when was this?
-
I can't seem to find it. :(
I'm pretty sure it was WMCoolmon, or possibly Wanderer... or taylor? Bleh. It was an experimental build, and you could add lights in one of the hooks... the lights only lasted one frame, however.
Edit: I tried looking at all the posts in Test Builds made by WMC, but either it wasn't there, or I missed it somehow.

:bump:
Has anyone had any better luck finding the thread than I did?
Obviously this is a double post, but since editing it won't bump the thread...
Edit: nonetheless, here's some info I found... in this post by WMC (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56192.0) there is mention that "minor light info functions for scripting (gr.Lights, light handle)" were added, but that there were "no creation functions yet". That said, I'm pretty sure there was a later version which worked. If anyone can find the post, that'd be awesome.
On a related note, does WMC still exist?
