Title: Who do you drive?
Post by: Retsof on April 07, 2010, 06:42:59 pm
As for me, I drive an 89 Toyota Celica (heh, one year older than I am).  It's not the prettiest car, and I need to do a little work on it, but it gets me where I need to go.  Also, it's a five speed, I don't think I'll ever go back to an automatic.

A '97 Ford Escort with only 65,000 miles on it.  Though granted, it's only my car in name, not in title, and my younger brother drives it far more frequently than I do.

Also no license. :nervous:

So I guess I drive public transport.

At home/commuting, either a '08 Mazda 3 Sport or a '97 Dodge Neon.  At work, either Ford Escape hybrids, Ford F-150 quad-cabs, or a Chevy Colorado.

Welcome to western Canada, where you must drive frickin' everywhere.

Contrary to legends, the red onez don't go fasta.  :P It's just got recurring problems, and though I love the vehicle, it's a bit of a pain. I can't use the A/C right now without fear of the car figuratively exploding.

2003 Toyota Tundra, 3.4L V6 with 5 speed manual transmission and 4WD.  Little boring during the summer months but come winter she eats New England inclement weather and boy howdy is it easy do transport leaves to the town compost :D.  I am considering getting a Honda Shadow Phantom for the fair weather commuting, but I'm not sure yet.  My previous car was a 1989 Oldsmobile Regency Brougham, it looked like a boat but it could haul ass, that was a fun car.

'05 Toyota Rav4. Decent in all aspects that I care about.

Small turning radius, responsive handling, surprising interior space, and deceptively snappy acceleration are traits that endear the vehicle to me.

Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Drifter.

Of course when it's raining I am in the P.O.S (piece of....you get the point).  That's a 91 baretta with manaul doorlocks and windows, no radio, what's a heater? The windows roll down so I have AC after a fashion, and sometimes I need to be Fred Flinstone to get it to move backward, ie open the door, stick my foot out and push.  My lady of course has a new Chrysler Town and Country Limited.

How'd I get stuck with the Baretta?  Something to drive to work when i can't ride.  When I can ride though, I'm just trying to understand why the dog sticks his head out the window.

2002 Honda Civic.  It's at around the 195,000 miles mark, and starting to show some signs of its age.  Its a 5-speed AT, which does have its perks, but as hard as I am on that car, I really ought to have gotten a MT.  MPG's used to be up in the high 30's.  Now it is right around 29 - 30.  But, the frame is in relatively good shape.  The engine itself is fine, just old (mileage-wise).  If it was a newer car, I'd seriously think of putting a turbocharger on it.  On these little rice-rockets, you can actually boost the fuel economy with a turbocharger, though that isn't normally why one does it.

2005 Honda Civic Hybrid.  Used, but it has only 37k miles.  Gets about 45mpg, 50-60 if I'm very careful.  Acceleration isn't spectacular, though I love being able to go 500 miles on a twelve gallon tank. :D

I normally have an '01 Honda Odyssey minivan, but the transmission went bad last month (a widespread problem with these vans) even though it only has 67k miles. :doubt: It is usable but needed to be replaced at some point, so I brought over my dad's '08 Honda Accord as a substitute for now.

The van is good for transporting stuff, and for day-to-day use I don't go out often/far enough for the fuel economy to matter much.

For what I drive...
2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT, 5.2L V8, 4x4, auto, extended cab, short bed. Complete with off-road light bar and headache rack.  Brush guard is coming soon.  92K on the engine.

1997 Dodge Ram 1500. Currently doesn't run, since I just bought it from a guy who took out the engine and transmission.  For the nice easy price of 2700 I've located replacements for both and I'm rebuilding it.  It's going to be my sister's birthday present this year.

And when I get back, I'm taking some of this tax free deployment money and buying myself a 1969 Deville convertible. :)

it wasn't a severe drift, just enough that i could tell it was.  though if i had done something stupid like tried hitting the breaks or letting off the gas, it might have.  it was on the entrance ramp to 440 from Crossroads blvd.  if you've never been on that one, it's even tighter than the western one.

MKII is a classic. besides, without the CNP installed (So cylons cant hack in), the MK7 is really no better than the MK2, infact its a bit bigger, thus a larger target for any robots that happen to be flying around.

Actually, that's the grille that I have now. I'm looking for something with a chrome insert, but I do not trust third-party parts. Far too often they don't quite fit correctly and the quality is crap. I have been thinking about getting the black plastic insert painted with a special chrome finish that would sticks to the insert like stink on ****.  I am told it is not too pricey.

As for the Z71 and 4x4, I live out in the country. A good half-hour drive to reach city limits and with the harsh Canadian winters, 4x4 is the only way around because it takes about two days before the snowplows get to the highways in my area. I have had my fair share of times of having to plow through four foot snow drifts this pass winter. :D

2009 Toyota Corolla XRS (2.4L) with the 5 speed AT. It was the right car to buy at the time but I'm only partially happy with it.  The size is perfect, handling is decent, everything fits together nicely (although it needed a new rear window because the other one didn't fit and was rattling around) now... it looks good for a Toyota too.  Suspension is a mix of firm and soft... may be something to do with the low profile performance tires.

On the upside it gets me around perfectly and thats what a car is supposed to do.  Maybe in a few years I'll try something new.

1994 Chrysler New Yorker, best car I've ever owned, even if it doesn't have a CD player.  22 MPG most days, though it has a few mechanical problems, at least it doesn't burn a quart of oil a week like my old one, a 1984 Chevy Caprice Classic(which I still have BTW, quietly rotting under a tree at the pond).

Both good cars, but why let the Caprice rot? You could make quite a bit of money either parting it out or just selling the whole thing, even if it's not in the greatest of conditions. :)

Been meaning to, tried to start it last year, but it shorted somewhere and I can't be arsed to go down there and move it to where I can get at it.  Besides, I drove it into the ground more or less, there aren't many parts in the engine that would be worth much.  On the upside, the tires are still inflated after 3 years.

Most UK car operators wouldn't survive a head-on at 60mph either.  The reason all those fancy ultra-high mileage europop golf carts aren't sold here in the states is because they don't meet the safety standards, and the ones that do cost a bunch more than domestic models in the same category.

Well, as long as the body isn't overly-rusted it's salvageable.  Replacement parts abound--thank God for recyclers and junkyards. :)

I swear deer are an evolutionary dead-end.  Any animal that seemingly tries to jump into the path of a loud, fast, scary metal monster with big bright lights deserves to go extinct.  I'm surprised the damn things don't plow into trees when they're running through the woods. :p

I drive my feet and public transport. Getting a licence to drive and a car is too expensive and too impractical for a country the size of Singapore. As it stands, there are far too many people clogging up the roads, and some are foolish enough to turn heavy traffic into jams by causing accidents.

The European crash safety standards are essentially equivalent as the North American safety standards.  There are differences and different requirements which means that cars that are certified for Europe have to be re certified for North America.  Japan has it's own standards too.  Plus all of the different pedestrian safety standards are different.  Similar end result but different standards.

The difference is not in safety.  The difference is because European cars use smaller engines and tend to favour diesel engines which get better mileage overall.  What Europeans don't tend to get without having been here is that the US and Canada have much greater distances and much bigger highways and often having the bigger engines is required to deal with highway speeds.  When I went to Ireland for example there was one road that even remotely looked like a major Canadian highway and that lasted only a little while.

Plus 22mpg is in the US measurement.  In the UK would be 26mpg.

Funny enough i think there was a list of funnest cars to drive and surplus police interceptors was one of them,  first because they can haul ass and second because other drivers instinctively make way for you.

2004 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L (bought this in August 2007) just over 50k miles driven with not one hiccup so far - still making the payments

1981 Toyota Pickup - 2.5L 22R  2WD 1/2 ton (got this back in Sept 09...in Dec 09 had to replace the main rear oil seal after finding a growing pool of oil under truck when took cat to the vet...took me 5 quarts of oil to get back home ...had to stop about every 12-15 miles and add a qt....but problem solved and since am making car payments on the dodge....I did the work myself and saved at least 300-400 in the process...and this has given me the confidence to see to any vehicular repairs on my own...largely because there's no way I can afford a mechanic on top of car payments and other bills...aaaaaaand well as long as ALL of my vehicles don't break down, I can take any amount of time necessary to do the work

1978 Toyota Corolla Liftback - got this back in May 05...bought it for 300 but have dumped nearly 1800 into it in repairs because I sent it to the ship to have the work done (at the time an 85 Dodge van I have I was able to use during down time and the mechanic could have problem fixed alot faster than my inexperience could...was driving this up until August 2007 when a rear outer axle seal went....and since the only other working vehicle at home was my van...which the folks were using as the only working transport for them....and since I couldn't afford to miss work days (I was still working PT) I opted to get a new(er) car about 7months sooner than planned.....but now....since this car despite being a money sump always ran even when 1 cylinder blew up a valve...I'm currently seeing to it that it is fixed once and for all...no more pussy footing around.....replaced the 3speed auto in it that even in Park the car could be pushed and put in a 5speed manual from a parts Corolla I'd gotten...and just today put oil pump from parts car in (want to see if that works before considering to pay 100 for a new one) since my oil pressure when engine is at temp would be like 5lb at idle and 20 at speed (it should be 60-80 at that point and 40 at idle) ---- I'd removed the tranny from the parts car last summer and learned quite a bit in the process and helped give the confidence when the truck went down ---- only thing to do for this thing soon as get the money and MAYBE get back the mid-30s mpg the car originally had will be to re-ring it (my dad has experience in this so will coach me so I'll know what to do)

I stick pretty strictly to paved roads, with an occasional gravel excursion for the hell of it.  Reason I head up into the mountains is because that's where the twisty roads are, and that's where the Focus is mad fun to drive.  Sure, it's advertised as a boring eco-commuter, but the suspension's designed for hard cornering.

To build on what IceFire said, the Focus will be all new in the 2011 model year, including the engine.  Now, the dork in me is all a-twitter over the technology that's being adopted in the new engine, but the consumer in me says you should hold off for a year or two to make sure any bugs get worked out or get a Focus from the '08 - '10 generation.

It's my dad's, but he's letting me have it when I move out for college.  It's not in the best state of repair, but it works as a car.  Blue paintjob1 with chrome on the detailing, wood panelling on the interior2 , upholstered interior3.  Gets around 20 MPG, which is pretty respectable for an old car, especially a gigantic steel one.

1: that's coming off in parts because the people we went to for the last paintjob sucked at it.  Badly.
2: might be fake wood.  Not sure
3: that's coming apart in some places

It works as a car, but it needs some renovation to look really good.  Still runs well, unless it hits a puddle, which shorts something under the hood.  Stops it cold.

:wtf:

Small cars in the late-'80's and early-'90's got ridiculous gas mileage on the highway.  Lighter weight materials were making their way into the construction process, and they weren't weighed down by the gadgets, luxury items, and safety features that you wouldn't/can't buy a car without today.  Moreover, small cars were smaller in the past than they are today.  My Focus would easily have been considered a mid-sized car twenty years ago, where it's considered a compact today.

Good luck maintaining highway speed up a hill, though.  Sixty to eighty horsepower was about the most power you could hope for from a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder at the time.  Low power helped keep the mileage even higher while cruising, but obviously the tradeoff is performance.

The basis for the above was my mother's 1988 Chevrolet Spectrum, which did about 50mpg on the highway (with a carburetted engine no less!), though I'd put good money on Scourge's Civic fitting into nearly the same mold.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Nuclear1 on May 22, 2010, 09:13:01 am
*snip*

Yep, pretty much.  If you didn't mind the lack of extra features, a basic 4-cylinder got incredible gas mileage, if only for the fact it would inherently use less gas than a six or eight would today.

There has to be some care taken to compare fuel economy ratings for older and newer cars.  The measurement system has been adjusted several times and most recently for the 2007 model year where pretty much every car had reduced fuel economy ratings.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

Yeah well, when I say miles per gallon, I mean miles driven per gallon of gasoline consumed. That is, the actual statistics for of the vehicle the way it is actually used, not some theoretical "highway" or "city" quantity.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Scourge of Ages on May 22, 2010, 03:46:30 pm
Yeah, my Civic gets an average of 30 mpg on the streets. That's stop-and-go traffic, rarely over 50 mph. When I take it long distance on the highway, it breaks 40 mpg pretty easily.

(That's 7.84 litres per 100k on streets and 5.88 lp100k on the highway for our metric friends)
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Aardwolf on May 22, 2010, 04:39:00 pm
Oh hey, my dad has corrected my estimate: it gets 50-55 mpg, depending on the time of year (more in the Summer).

1985 Chevrolet M1009 Blazer (look it up)

The M1008/09/10 were a five year ('83-'87) Army experiment to convert existing civilian vehicles into civilian use.  They ended up deciding it wasn't as cost-effective as they had hoped, and switched to the HMMWV (Hummer) and other custom options instead.

Some facts:

Front and rear Corporate 10-bolt 3/4 ton axles
6.2L (379ci) Detroit Diesel - this thing is a bit low on power but great on torque and gas mileage, and the power can be fixed by converting a turbo from the later 6.5L Detroit
TH400 (Turbo 400) transmission and a NP208 transfer case, both still shift smooth - transfer case protected by skid plate
10-bolt Gov-loc differential
Warn manual locking hubs
12/24V hybrid electrical system to drive the NATO slave port on the front and a whole mess of comm equipment that it was equipped with at one point
27 gallon tank, with the reported 20mpg fuel efficiency that's around a 540 mile range.
31" Goodyears currently installed
Top comes off :)
Power nothing except steering and brakes ;)
Manual locks, manual windows, manual rear window, no A/C, just heat and defrost, no radio, no overhead lights, no carpets, just like I like it.

What's up with your Corolla, Ice ?
Ahh it's a fine car... it's not at the build quality level I was expecting on the interior bits but the mechanicals are just fine.  The biggest problems I have with it are a comfort problem (I have a couple of back/nerve issues that cropped up after a soccer injury - not as young as I used to be I guess :)) and a suspension problem.

The suspension is fine... but it's so damn stiff on the XRS model.  I know a sporty ride is supposed to be stiff yes... but over time it starts to drive you nuts.  Yeah it corners well for a Corolla and the 2.4L is torquey and fun but unless the road is very even you feel every imperfection. I've test driven other sporty cars with much smoother rides but with similar handling so it's just the way that Toyota did the setup.  Also the tires are P225/45R17 so they are very low profile.  The more standard Corolla S or LE are 215/55R16. Again..decent handling... very flat cornering but it's not so pleasant on long rides.

So at some point after I'm doing with some additional schooling and have secured a new job I may be looking at a 2012 Focus or something else and trade in the Corolla.  I think I pretty much need to have a power seat adjust so I can get the angles for my long legs right so that my back doesn't have as many issues and I'll make sure I don't buy the super sporty model. If that doesn't work I may have to buy a mid sizer just for the extra leg room.

In the meantime it's a perfectly fine car. Oh except the recalls... but you can't win em all :)

IceFire, how tall are you? I noted in quite a few small compact cars, I couldn't fit comfortably. Even with the seat sunk to the floor, my head was rubbing the roof. Further, since I have long legs, too, most vehicles I either had my knees hitting the dash OR I found the wheel & gear stick a bit too far away. I'm only 6'1", but I have long legs. It was worse to sit in the back seat; I can't sit straight because my head would be against the roof or the back glass.

I'm 5'11" and proportionally I have longer legs.  The only compact I've felt truly comfortable in to date was the VW Golf. It had power adjust and really good seat travel.  Presumably the Germans have enough tall people that they factor in their calculations differently than the Japanese.  The Corolla is not bad... (better than the Civic and Mazda3) but it's still a bit of a pain (literally) sometimes.

It'll do for now. It's a good car... and the XRS model is decently well equipped.

All I'm saying is even the most hardcore bike riders at my office live within a 5 minute drive.  I however live across a major river about 40 miles away, it's not exactly a choice for me.  Even getting to the nearest Wal-Mart is about out of the question, and I can't exactly bike back with a trunk load of groceries now can I?

All the major things I go to are rather close together, so I usually don't ride very far if I need to go somewhere in town.  When I choose to go for a ride I usually go 16-20 miles, average speed 18 mph.

I *WISH* I could walk anywhere I need to go like some of my friends, but I like out in the middle of FREAKING NOWHERE.

I don't think most people in Europe realize the distances between places in America.

Hell, even suburbia is sprawled-out enough that you just about need a car to get anywhere.  I wouldn't put my life in the hands of a bike on the roads around here, that's for sure. :p

That's what's so cool about where I live--if you don't trust the drivers (who are pretty tame around here), you can get just about anywhere on the bike path system.  It's really well developed.  Hell, you can even make it to the next town without... scratch that.  With a small sojourn on a back road, you can make it from one town to the next using the bike paths.  And the paths keep on going!  I haven't fully explored them all.  New summer project: see just how far I can make it on the paths.

I only wish we had something like that.  A few spare roads around here have the odd bike lane, but everything else is plain roads or nothing, and many of those are of the hilly, curving, please-don't-hit-me sort.

I wish we had anything remotely like that. In my town in Southern California, all the roads are packed during daylight hours, with hardly any shoulder to ride on and drivers who have a habit of not looking before doing anything.

It's an adrenaline rush to ride the 8 miles to work.
