Title: OT? 3D Studio / 3D MAX, whuts the difference
Post by: JarC on May 09, 2001, 07:25:00 am
I'm curious folks, I've seen references to 3D Studio, 3D MAX and 3D Studio MAX

I know the first two are different tools, although I have no idea what that difference is, but how does 3D Studio MAX fit in? Is it a combination of both?

I think there's just 3DS and 3DS MAX. Or so I've understood it.

Hem... all thos progs are different version of the same one. Like you have Paint Shop pro 3, PSP5 and PSF5 special edition, you have 3DStudio3.0, 3ds4.0, 3ds MAX and so on...

I could be that 3D studio is Raydream 3D Studio and MAX is Kinetix 3D Studio MAX but I think:

3D Studio is a normal version
3D Studio MAX is a professional version

Like you get Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Professional.

Not sure though. E-mail Kinetix (MAX's maker) and ask them.

MAX saves objects as .3ds and scenes as .MAX.

3D Studio MAX is the newest version.

3D studio started in the old DOS days as a 16-bit modelling package, a bit like imagine 4.0 etc.

3D Studio MAX came along and was optimised for windows NT, frull 32bit and had one of the fastest renderers available (still does..though not the best looking!)

3Dsmax also added NURBS support, better multithreading for SMP machines and all that.

kinetix, the guys who make 3d Studio MAX, got merged discreet last year, and they changed the name to 3dsmax on release 4, which is now the latest version.
