Title: The Republic, a character render
Post by: Ace on April 15, 2002, 07:09:48 pm
Well part of my own little sci-fi universe, I decided to render up the face of one of the major characters.

In his late 20s, a topnotch pilot and squadron commander in the Republic of Sol who has been thrown into the deadliest conflict ever known by his Emporer.

I don't know, Jason Lee or maybe the The Void might kill you if I told ;) (The Void is especially touchy about things like this...)

How does he do it.

I cant model faces that well yet.
I dont model faces.
Because I think modelling people is boring, spaceships are much more fun (YEA..my tutors...are you READING THIS??? )

Well, ace?  care to share the secret?

he uses poser, he probly isn't modeling anything, but the maps are another story, will you tell us were you learned poser
Title: The Republic, a character render
Post by: Ace on April 15, 2002, 08:39:53 pm
Yeah, poser had the base model because it would take too much time to do an original mesh, organic things I can do spaceships are *groans* well I thought they'd be easy :p I exported it into Max and added some more mesh detail though so I could stretch/play with it like playdough in Poser for more detail, plus UV mapping.

On the hair: Planes, transmap, and texture.

On the face: Photos, photoshop, Max to tweak the UV mapping of default Poser models

I could do the hair in photoshop, but this is quicker and means no post-production...

they're both pretty cool.
the first one needs to brush his hair- joshua hondle or something? yeah. he needs better hair, and his skin is so pale... the second one, robert michaels, looks strange cos you can see his hair through a non-existant body...
i guess, render-wise, they're good. im in no position to tell...
:)good job, dude!you deserve a cookie!

Actually she's right. It looks kinda weird, when you can see... a head...

Which reminds me: :headz: (just for fun)

Everything I wanted to be said has been said already. ;) I'd love to see neck and shoulders on those, but that would mean you'd need to make clothing too, which would double your work. Looks good. :)

Just a curious question (not meant to be sexist or anything but)

Why does it take a girl to notice that first? ;)

Notice what? Thats how is hair is meant to be and of course you can see all his hair, because Ace has only rendered the head.

Ace- what's the going rate for half a dozen full custom character models these days? TAC has predictably left the world of "FreeSpace mod" and gone off into the realms of "alternate universe" again, and while I'm happily plunking away at billion-poly everythings, I have no characters to put in them, aside from the crappy stock Ray Dream ones (Have to directly edit the mesh to move so much as an arm, estimated time 1 hour per frame) and the MAX IK skeleton, who isn't particularly lifelike and resistant to skinning...

Come on. You know you want to.;7

Title: The Republic, a character render
Post by: Ace on April 16, 2002, 05:03:41 pm
Well I'm hoping wEvil can do that, since importing Poser files into MAX is still tricky. (even then, he'd have to animate any people done up)

the first one needs to brush his hair- joshua hondle or something? yeah. he needs better hair, and his skin is so pale... the second one, robert michaels, looks strange cos you can see his hair through a non-existant body...
On the first guy, well he has a bad haircut, that's part of his "look" his skin is also pale in this image because I exaggerated the colors a bit here and there.

I only rendered the 'headz' since I don't have a good uniform done yet, plus it takes less time to render.

I'm surprised that no one has commented yet that in a real military they wouldn't be allowed to have hair so long. Well with the first guy, he's under orders to let it grow out a bit so he looks like he's on an early retirement, with the second well he lost is wife and honestly doesn't care about how he looks anymore...

I have my hair as a crew cut all the time. Dunno bout flyboys, grunts arent allowed long hair, unless they've been on a field op for ages.

Sarah Micheals, Snider's daughter (almost 19) she does some work for Republic intelligence. (Snider started a family rather young, in his early 20s, slightly over 40 himself, while Duke is in his mid 30s)

On that, flyboys are supposed to keep crew cuts like naval officers, there is a little more leeway in length, just as long as it's short enough to not get in the way of the helmet.

I was trying to figure out what was so strange about her and I thought at first it was the ears but it wasn't, not exactly... (they're actually slightly too low, if you wanted to know) and then I figured: It's the hair again. Her hair's... it's not stranded, like, it looks like a sheet of cloth...

anyway, criticisms aside, I like her eyes. :)

Drevi i'm basing off a friend of mine, but he'll look quite evil i suppose.

Trying not to be funny, but drevi should have slightly recessed and thin eyes, probably normally dressing in an aliens style collarless suit-type arrangement.  I know its sortof cliched but its all I can think of atm.

Dont expect anymore for about a week while I go on a drinking binge tomorrow for a mates' birthday, and finish off some other work thats becoming critical. Sowwy :(

I was thinking derivative of some of the B5 costume designs maybe with more contemporary influences.

:wtf: im not a bloody tailor!  gnn...anyway, i'll have to get the actua body/head model done before I can start on that.

Physical dimensions? Probably medium height, medium build.  not bulky or thin etc.

very close cut hair (not shaved, light kind of stubble with receding hairline).

No facial hair but maybe some stubble for "cliched dramatic effect"

Well I did a few tweaks on the hair in the Snider render so it looks softer, I need to do a little more here and there.

I redid the emporer one totally with an expression not so much like Yoda and his "pipe" ;)

One of the redos I did trying to get with more what the character originally looked like wound up looking like Thunder, after being scared I decided to go back to the old man and his stubble of hair.

Instead of starting a new topic,  I decided to post this here:

One of the Republic naval uniforms, the render here doesn't do much justice for it, and I'm tweaking the mesh still for the male one. Unisex uniform which looks identical for both of course save for some proportions. A lot of sci-fi is pretty tasteless in the uniforms/clothing (hrmmm... classic Trek...) which is something trying to be avoided here.

Influence here is a bit of FS, "greys" from the Lensman series, and a little bit from the show Enterprise. Also a great deal of a modern BDU is in here, like the pocket setup, etc. etc. though you don't get a good shot of them here so it's meant to be actually functional ;)

Title: The Republic, a character render
Post by: Styxx on April 23, 2002, 07:03:30 am
That's part of the shirt, I'd say. And I think it needs to be a little more formal. It's looking too... grungy (or whatever the term is) to be a military uniform, I think. But it's a nice start.
Title: The Republic, a character render
Post by: Ace on April 26, 2002, 12:57:49 am
That's part of the shirt Steak :p

The only reason why it looks unkempt is because of the lighting, also I'm still tweaking the textures on it.
