Title: Monitoring Ship Status
Post by: Systematic on April 19, 2010, 09:54:18 pm
Let's say I need to escort or destroy a ship. How do I get the ship status monitor that appears in the HUD that says "Monitoring" and had the ship name and hull integrety? Do I use "protect ship" or "escort ship" in the Misc area of the ship editor?

Thanks for the help!

P.S. If it's either of the two, it'd feel weird to say "protect ship" or "escort ship" for a ship you want to destroy! :)

You should do the FRED tutorial, I think it explains stuff like this.

And yeah, it's 'escort ship', and you'll need to set a priority.

I have done the FRED tutorial! There's so much stuff to cover and I forget some of it! I ask here for simple convienience as does 98% of all the other people who post in this forum. Now I am curious as to why I have to set a priority just for the simple convienience of having a box that shows the hull integrety of an important ship.

Because how will the list know in what order to show the ships with the escort flag? Or who to bump off if more than five (six?) ships are on the list?

The priority number indicates how high on the list the ship will be displayed.

Yeah, that's true....but...where do I set the priority? All I see is a checkbox and when I click mit, it gets checked and thats it. Also, do I need to set a priority if I'm only going to have...say...three ships appear in the box and I don't care what order they are in (even though I do care....still...)?

What version of FRED2Open are you using?

I'm pretty sure you could set that even in retail...
I believe it was even in the walkthrough.

That sounds odd. What build do you use?

Right beneath the "Escort Ship" checkbox is another one "Priority" ( usually ), the higher the number, the higher the priority is.

It should be there. Have a look at the help file for the ship editor.

Maybe it is there. I'll check later. One more thing and this is just out of curiosity, what does "protect ship" do?

Prevents AI from firing at it.

It will not stop players from firing at it, or prevent it from being destroyed by a stray beam or weapons shot that hits it. You will need guardian or invulnerability to do that.

Nope! I still can't find this priority box for escort ship. It's not there! Where do I set the priority?! I'm using FRED 1 by the way.

Right, just so you're aware, if you make a campaign with FRED1 there is very little possibility that anyone will play it. Though I gotta admire the effort!

You should probably open up FRED2Open and get to work there, I've never heard of anyone either FREDding with or playing vanilla FS1 these days.

I'm not making the mission (not campaign (yet)) for others to play, I'm making it for my own enjoyment and for the fun of making it! Also, I like FS1 better than FS2 (*GASP* (YEAH, I SAID IT! SO WHAT?!)) I mean, FS2 is a great GREAT game but I liked FS1 better (FS1 is a great GREAT GREAT game (and my favorite game of all time)). I've played FS2 but I don't have it. I only have FS1 and Silent Threat.

Anyways, back to my question, where do I set the priority?!!?

Don't know if you can in FreeSpace 1. Never used it, nor liked it very much.

You can always just play FreeSpace 1 missions in FreeSpace 2 using the FreeSpace port, if that's your thing.

I'll just click the "Escort Ship" box then! Thanks for the help everyone!!!!

Although FS1 is better than FS2, there are very few people who still play it. The FSPort lets you play the FS1 campaign with FS1 ships and weapons using the FSOpen engine, and it's what most people play for FS1.

I just gotta say, if you make a campaign for FS1, people will try to play it on the Port and then realize that it's for a game that some people don't even have installed anymore.

that it's for a game that some most people don't even have installed anymore.

Factual inaccuracy fixed.

You seem to have forgotten the part where I said that I'm making this just for fun and I don't intend on putting it up.
