Except for when he was doing stuff to spec for things that had to be just so, like for Star Wars art, John Berkey (http://www.google.com/images?q=John+Berkey) had a style that always stood out, easily identifiable as his work.
Swoopy curves, tall tailfins and/or bridge towers, thin little wings and usually plenty of spots filled with greebles. I've never seen any 3D ships looking like Berkey designs, except perhaps the Minbari from B5.
