Title: whats new
Post by: silverwolf on April 27, 2010, 04:41:51 pm
I haven't been  aroudn for a while but i got an itching for freespace. I dont have my discs with me i dont think and i can only get internet at the public library. Does the online distribution around resuming the download  if i have to leave. Also what are some great new campaigns to try out. Last time i was here the buzz was about sync and transcend

One thing you should be aware of is that HLP does NOT distribute FS2 anymore. You can get it for 6$ at GoG.com; their downloader should allow restarting.

Once you've downloaded and installed that, the FSO installer will set you up with the community goodies, and yes, that one allows restarting as well.

Some campaigns you absolutely shouldn't miss are Derelict, Transcend, Blue Planet, Silent Threat Reborn, and Windmills. If you're looking for a challenge, The Procyon Insurgency as well.

Blue Planet is a fairly popular campaign in the community. It has full voice acting. I loved it so very much that I helped get it voice acted, which obviously makes me a bit biased, but people seem to like it.

ST:R is awesome and is another one of the titans of the community. It also has full voice acting. It's probably the closest anyone has come to making a campaign that's both Volition-quality and Volition-style.

Windmills is a short experimental campaign by the guy who did Transcend.

You could also check out Ancient-Shivan War, which is pretty great.

Silent Threat: Reborn is superb. In addition to fantastic mission design, it is fully voice-acted.

Blue Planet was a bit silly, but you didn't ask for my opinion. It's new; play it. :P

Uncharted Territory is a fun mini-campaign.

It's not for everybody, but most players seem to adore it, and of course feedback is always welcome.

The Procyon Insurgency is one you should only consider if you're up for a real challenge. It was designed by an expert for experts, but it's very rewarding.

Just like? :P

You've probably played Sync if you played Transcend then but if not this is also a good campaign, I believe I had a good time with Homesick. There's also What if: Another Great War being a play on the FS1 campaign with FS2 elements, Dawn of Sol was alright but fairly challanging, if you haven't fried the Inferno arc there's R1 and Sol: A History, I like those two.
If you want to get silly there's DEM: Interlude and JAD if you haven't played the latter.

Oh, and there's the Ancient-Shivan War, real good one.

wow i forgot how beefy FSO was. Last night I jumped into Derelict SCP and couldn't get past the second mission cause the ice field lagged me to unplayable frame rates...time to try it on a different computer I guess

No, it's just the ice field doing it. Remove MV_Advanced and try it again, or just try a different campaign with no asteroids or ice fields.

i dont have advanced effects so looks like it'll be a different campaign for me.  Part of the problem is i'm running it on a laptop too i bet so its just a matter of finding  which one of my machines will gobble  FSO for lunch.

If its just the ice field removing MV_Advanced won't do anything, would it?
I thought MV_Advanced was only animated glowmaps and weapons effects.
Its the asteroids that lag.

Wait...asteroids shouldn't rape framerate uber hard anymore. You sure you have the latest MVPS?

Turn the model and texture detail down a notch or two if it gets that intensive.

What sort of hardware are you running the game with?

If he downloaded the 3.6.10 mediavps via Turey's installer, those might not be the right version. The patch was for the re-release of the mediavps, after all, and the asteroids were basically un-lodded in one of the earlier versions of 3.6.10.

I've heard from Goober that Turey's Installer does download the latest 3.6.10 MediaVPs and the patch.

Of course, things depend on when the Installer was used to download stuff.
