I didn't really know whether to post this in celebration of FS or not, and one of the videos from here is relevant to another thread (actually inspired the playthrough).
This is basically how to get all the medals on medium very easily.
I'm slacking in some of the later missions and still get the medals with ease, so if anyone struggles on med, here's how to use the AI best on the trickier missions.

I like the figure-8's in the briefing. :D
-
I had considered cutting all the briefings out but I realised they add a lot of context to the missions, and they would make the weapon selection less disjointed...
The only problem is I know most of the dialogue by heart so I tend to get a bit bored xD
I resorted to going afk in some, and skipping unneeded pauses in both combat(x*compression) and speech in others lol..
You could consider it fairly close to a speed-run, in all honesty..
wtb more feedbacks though =<
Even negative ;P!
-
I'd cut the briefings. If I consult a walkthrough, then I'm aware what the briefing says, and I'm only interested in how the mission should be played.
-
Have only watched two videos so far, but /me likes very much. :)
I say keep the briefings. A sizeable percentage of your audience will watch the videos just to find out what the missions are like (or just for entertainment), rather than for a walkthrough. That group would need the briefings for context.
-
Guess I'll wait and see what other opinions are voiced, but yea I had kinda convinced myself it was better to leave them in.
Also!
This isn't going to be my only one.
Currently 3 or 4 missions into ST:R, after that, FS2 MVP, After that .....?

...Profit? :P
And yes, you should keep the briefings in my opinion.
I've watched all the videos up to "Aftermath" and I like them so far. You're really a top-notch pilot. :D
-
Man, this makes my lazily-delayed Let's Play of Destiny of Peace look pathetic. :p Well done. :)
-
Are you sure you are not playing with a mouse? :p

Well, if you're really into this sort of thing, add Derelict, Warzone and PI to the list, and if you're REALLY, REALLY into this, add SGWP2 as well.
-
Well I dunno how fast I'll be publishing since this was my sanity keeper/boredom fighter while my gf was away for a week~, but I've gotten it down to a point where the actual publishing the video part takes about 30-40 minutes total, so it's not like it's a hassle really...
Spoon; I swap to the mouse on occasion (normally only for long range shots), you can tell when that is because the speed of turning is normally a /lot/ slower, but you wont really see it much until I do the FS2 playthrough with a maxim. :p
-
What about other campaigns? Shrouding the light might be one...
-
I'd do TBP's Raider Wars after FS2 :)
-
Hmm... great idea! What res did you record in?
-
Or Blue Planet DC
-
Hmm... great idea! What res did you record in?
1080p@60FPS to reduce tearing, it's not up or downscaled on the 1080p version of YT.
Occasionally my system drops below 60FPS on missions like Universal Truth but for FSPort it stuck there.
....BP DC is a tempting idea actually chief..
Edit;
By the way, does anyone have the details for the medals on ST:R? Do any medals require hard or insane?

By the way, does anyone have the details for the medals on ST:R? Do any medals require hard or insane?
- str01: Commendation Medal: Complete the mission (without destroying the Fermi Communications terminal)
- str07: Distinguished Flying Cross: Complete all primary and secondary objectives
- str07: Meritorious Unit: Complete all primary and secondary objectives, complete the bonus objective (kill the two Liliths), and get the kill for at least one Lilith (note that this overrides the DFC)
- str08: Distinguished Flying Cross: Complete all primary and secondary objectives (this is only available if you earned the Meritorious Unit in str07)
- str11: Medal of Honor: Complete the mission
- str14: Military Defense: Complete all primary and secondary objectives (hardest medal, in terms of piloting skill, in the campaign)
- str16: Vasudan Alliance: Complete the mission while protecting the PVC Hathor and the transports
- str18: Galactic Service: Complete the mission
No medals depend on skill level. Note that you can earn up to seven medals in the campaign; missions 7 and 8 are set up so that if you complete the "extra credit" goal, you don't lose your opportunity to earn the DFC.
-
Guess I'll keep going through ST:R on Medium then, the thought of doing 7 (MU) on Insane is a little intimidating (well, doing it on fraps anyway, every time you restart the mission you have to go out and delete +-18GB of data :<) ;D
-
Hmm, didn't know FS2 could run in 1080p. I should've recorded at that resolution myself instead of scaling.
It's about time we got someone to show everyone how it's done
-

FSO can run at any resolution your monitor/GPU combo is capable of.
-
Well, I've been having trouble convincing it to run at 1400x1050 in fullscreen (that is, with black bars on the side instead of seeing my desktop) which is why I thought that it was a problematic thing. Maybe it was just my drivers.
-
Heck mine isn't even 'true 1920x1080', it's FullScreenWindowMode + 1920x1080, because, simply, after it was added, FSWM is the only mode you should ever run ;D!
Also, /slaps Goober about for the valks with rockeyes in two consecutive missions.
Layzeee! :P
-
Yeah I actually recorded my second FotG vid in 720p since at the time that was the highest supported. I'm gonna try 1080p next since that's available on Youtube now.
-
By the way, if you want a bundle of laughs, turn on CC and transcribe to English.
To illustrate my point, see the attached image. The transcriber was attempting to transcribe "The GTD Minnow has been deployed to Beta Aquilae and Betelgeuse, while the P...".

:wtf: A Rockeye is a FS2-era weapon, and FSPort contains no FS2-era weapons (unless you count the Hornet). You might be running with a table bug. Can you provide a screenshot and your fs2_open.log file?
-
He must mean the MX-50.
-
I did, sorry, I do that on occasion with FS1 vs FS2 missiles, they are basically the same weapon to me :<
-
Ah, okay. Well, could you provide screenshots anyway (or at least tell me which missions you saw that in)? I don't recall putting MX-50s as default in any mission, which means I must have accidentally specified a default weapon that the Valkyrie can't carry.
-

Missions 4 and 5, Alpha Wing both times.
Also, have you got any idea how to get str-mediavps' mod.ini to work with launcher 5.5f?
It keeps erroring on me about having (invalid mod.ini) "multiple mod parameters; only -mod calls are allowed"
I ask because I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem with fraps and Taylor's sound build and 5.5f b1 just doesn't like str (other mods work fine)
[multimod]
primarylist = fsport-mediavps,fsport-str;
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps;
Is what my multi mod line looks like atm.
-
That's odd about Alpha wing. I'll go and add proper default weapons.
And ugh about the launcher. This must be one thing that slipped through the cracks; certain launchers didn't like hyphens in mod names. I'll shoot him an email.
-
So I checked out Playing Judas to see if you did something to prevent it from being boring and... I must say you delivered!
-
I'll knock the hyphens out to work around it in the meantime.
;D Molybdenum

I received a request to include commentary like that of SuperCoolAI's - Does anyone else want this?
Specifically, the request was to explain why I'm doing what I'm doing in the missions rather than just showing it being done, because they prefered to see the thoughts/reasoning behind the plan than the plan itself.
-
I will say yes if:
1) You're up to it;
2) your speech can keep up with your flight patterns; and
3) you don't sound like whoever did the briefing for Derelict SCP.
-
I've been watching this! Stumbled across it while revisiting FS, brings back good memories.
-

Ugh, no. Chatting during missions can be annoying, especially if the mission is voice-acted. If you want to add commentary, use the YouTube captioning feature.

Oh yeah, good point...
Either that or turn voice down a lot/off completely. I've seen LPs where the player is able to mix in-game dialogue with his own commentary very well, so it's not impossible to have QD's voice and the VA at the same time.

Agreed. Captions = Good, and will add extra awesomeness as people can see why you do what you do. But no dubbing over the in-game voiceacting please.
-
and what about pandora's box or even cardinal spear? That one would be good!
-
That's exactly what movie commentary does though. You simply turn down the other sounds a bit when the directors are talking about a particular scene or event. Plus you could probably strew it between important mission dialog.
-
True, but with movie commentaries you generally also have the option of watching it without the commentary. If there were to be a seperate version with audio commentaries though, while keeping the original-sounds one as is (or with just captions), I'd certainly not object :)
-

I find this more distracting than having the commentator's voice only. Make it either/or, but don't mix them.

You do have the option to play the game or watch this walkthrough.

Lots of mixed opinion....
I think I'll go with Goober's idea if I can find a way to use the captions without ruining it (I hate youtube captions).
-
How about doing it "Pop-Up Video" style? :D

You've seen the CCs on your videos, yes? :drevil:

3) you don't sound like whoever did the briefing for Derelict SCP.
Wait, what? :(
-
Nice playthrough!
I deffo vote for keeping the briefings in; This is a complete longplay so saving as much of the content as possible is the way to go. Not many of us here would have the patience to if we did it! :)
Besides, people that don't want to see them can skip, whereas if it was done without the briefings there wouldn't be any way of seeing it.
I like the idea of a commentary, but youtube doesn't allow dual-audio tracks.
You considered making an ogg/mkv version (Xvid or H264?)? Then you could have full resolution, split audio tracks for game sound/commentary, maybe a subtitle-track for the commentary... I wouldn't mind seeding a torrent of it :)

That means learning new software though, I might play around with it at some point but the current routine I have for uploading footage is so easy, almost the entirety of FSPort, and ST:R Subsequently were first-time-play recorded footage that was encoded in ~10 minutes immediately after play, and then uploaded to youtube taking about 20-30 minutes after that.
Also, I really wish the SD Archon wasn't massive damage tagged :<

What do you mean? You wish it didn't have the "big damage" ship flag? Why?
Also, you seem to have stopped including a description in your ST:R videos...
-
I will do when I get the chance to watch the footage back (that's how I've done them all previously) but I love the last 8 or so missions of ST:R so much that I wanted to get to them ASAP to play them ;D
I have basically been uploading missions while playing the next ones... hehe.
If you were on IRC you'd see some of the comments that are likely to go into the descriptions already though ;P!
I completely forgot about the big damage tag comment.
Yea, I hate it a great deal in FS2, and in FSPort/ST:R I really appreciate that ships are/should be exempt from that tag, to me it basically destroys the gameplay on assault missions, and you will see why when you watch the vid of mission 18 ;P

Funny thing... ChatZilla hasn't been working recently; it refuses to connect. Dunno why. I'm going to use Mibbit for the time being.

Mmm. Yeah, we had intended to disable that flag for the ST:R missions. Unfortunately, by the time we transitioned from version 2.3 to version 3.0 of the Port, most of the ST:R missions had already been FREDded, and we found that using FS1 big-damage behavior would completely throw off the balance. We opted against rebalancing all those missions yet again. Fortunately, the FS1 missions didn't suffer from that problem (as they had naturally been balanced for FS1 behavior) so the FS1 missions have the big-damage behavior disabled.
