Title: Infinity: The Sexiest Thing You'll Ever See...
Post by: Thaeris on May 11, 2010, 01:02:40 pm
I thought this project was the most incredible thing I've ever heard of when I first learned of it, and this video proves my sentiments:

http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=113&Itemid=93

All we need now is to make a FS mod for it when the engine is released...

 :pimp:

Did no one watch the video? That seriously has been one thing I've wanted in a space sim for a really long time - realistic physics with the ability to go anywhere and do anything I darn well please. You know, something like Frontier but without (hopefully) the bugs and having a decent, understandable UI.

Not to mention how sexy the procedural planet, stars, etc., are...

 ;)

Not to steal your thunder, but there's people here that know about it, and it's been brought up before.

Even FringeSpace has one staff member that helps with Infinity's audio scores
and one of their concept artists offered to help us with some fleshing out of new
ship designs.

Infinity has been WIP for awhile now.

...and unless they've changed policy... they've said many times in the past that absolutely no modding
would be allowed to the final game, whenever it's finished.

Otherwise, nice to see they are progressing on the transitioning and landscapes.

Hmmm...

I thought I heard the engine would be available, though. Free or for a price, but available...

I've seen an Infinity demo before and posted a topic once. This one seems newer and better than the one I saw, would be very nice when it's finished.

I wonder how long it took to make the models for the planet and asteroids?

And two posts while I was typing...!

Available as in to play, for free or a price... they've been discussing that topic since
the combat demo went out years ago.

But like I said, it's been a while... maybe they've got new people and things change.

either that was a tiny planet, or that ship was hauling some serious ass.

I'm hoping it's the latter.  :D

And yes, from a look at the forum (heck, I've not been on there in AGES!), it looks like the iNovae[sic] engine will be available to developers at some point after Infinity is released.

That has got to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in a game before.  Seeing a game that does all that procedurally has been a dream of me and my friends for quite some time.

The graphics engine is very pretty and very clever.

Other than that, I've learned very little of the substance of the game over the years, other than the fact it is pretty. I just get a horrible suspicion that this will end up serving more as a tech-demo of what can be done and will never reach release as feature after feature creeps into the design. I hope I'm wrong, but all I've seen for the last 2 years is more and more polishing on a graphics engine which still doesn't, as far as I can tell, have much of a game running under it.

if that be the case, maybe they can sell it to someone who WILL make a game with it.

Thing is, every video I've seen of this game begins with a ship interacting with a ringed planet, that's pretty much it, now, it's spectacular to watch, and maybe, once the Universe is proedurally populated with forests and cities etc, and the combat simulator allows the fights to traverse from space to the planetary surface, with local police reacting to the disturbance etc, when the whole engine interacts with itself, allowing vast trade fleets to ply the distances between worlds, fending off raiders and actually affecting the economy of the worlds involved, then I'll start getting excited about the environment I'm doing it in, until that point, it's all just a very, very pretty graphics demo.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

(In other words, call me in 2015 when there's actually a game to go with this, or when someone buys the engine and makes a better, non-MMO game).

It looks quite nice, especially the seamless space/surface transition, but like Sushi said I don't care much until there is a non-MMO game made out of it.

I for one also really don't care much for the prospect of MMOs, but I might reconsider if this comes out. However, if a free version something along the lines of the combat prototype came out, that might also be a decent alternative.

I really need to get back to designing the heavy fighter I was working on for this as well...

It'd be an awesome engine for a Starsiege: Tribes like game.

It's a pre alpha graphics demo, so for now that's all there is to see. However, checking out the  universe description page (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=40) it would seem that it might actually be that. At first glance I get the feeling it is (except for the no modding part which blows) Freelancer done right.

Yup, I've been following the development, so I know that's what the author intends, but the problem is there seems to be this obsession with polishing the graphics to the point that the graphics have been the only aspect of the game that appears to have been developed over the last several years.

It seems to me that the author(s) need to define a 'good enough' point for the graphics engine and start developing the rest, and return to the shiny later, otherwise it's going to feature creep itself into incredibly long production times. Maybe it's the fact that any game with 'Forever' or 'Infinity' in the title seems to have a nasty habit of doing that....
/me looks at Twisted Infinities...

:nervous:

Maybe all the ever-delayed mods around here could start saying they'll "be done before Infinity is released" since they need a replacement for DNF now that it's finally dead and buried.

This game is Older Than The Internet (TM). Also, yea, have seen no progress other than really pretty graphics. Wake me up when there's a remote possibility it's gonna go anywhere.

I would also like to ask: What is the point of procedurally generated planets? Unless they add the ability for you to actually build stuff on them (oh my GOD feature creep), what you'll end up having is the same thing that happened in Mass Effect: gigantic expanses of nothingness populated by small points of mitigated usefulness. What, exactly, is the benefit to being able to fly down to every deserted planet in the galaxy?

Ya, same here.

Well, it allows for a infinity huge universe, which is kind of nice if you are making a MMO.  Building stuff on them is apparently part of the plot (at least it was the last time they I looked at the site in any detail, which I think was around the time the combat demo came out).

And you are dead on about the feature creep, it is starting to turn into DNF in that it is taking him so long to develop the regular features that by the time he finishes on, the "graphics" are out of date and he needs to "update" them again.

what you'll end up having is the same thing that happened in Mass Effect: gigantic expanses of nothingness populated by small points of mitigated usefulness. What, exactly, is the benefit to being able to fly down to every deserted planet in the galaxy?
I thought that is how all MMO's work.  Either everything is too close together and all of the players are all on top of each other or everything is too far apart and no one ever meets.

Let's not forget it's a free game developed by fans so it's pretty much like our community, not exactly the same but something like it.
Let's back their effort! all our support for a world where free games and fans make the difference :P

By the time this comes out, everyone's computers will probably support it, haha.

Reading the 2010 in perspective post, apparently they're going for getting the engine operational and available for others, instead of focusing on the MMO they're planning.

It's pretty, but I wouldn't call it terribly realistic. That acceleration/deceleration looks like it could easily kill the pilot. And reentry from that speed? That atmosphere better be thinner than it looks.

We've also decided to revise our strategy. Until now, our goal was to release the first version of Infinity, not necessarily feature-complete, and to later sell engine licenses. The priorities have changed slightly. Development of Infinity has gone under a lower priority while we work to get the I-Novae Engine production ready. Overall we see this as a benefit to you, the community, as when it's ready we would like to release a public toolset so that everyone can explore the possibilities opened up by our planetary engine and begin creating their own universes.

Modding possibilities ho!

Yeah, this LOOKS really, really cool, but unless there's some movement on the actual "game" front, it's doubtful many people will pay much attention to this project. That said, it looks like there is a fairly nifty backstory already, and some of the concept art and renders are sick. That tech demo video gave me vibes of an upgraded X-universe game, somehow.

To those not impressed with the engine:

As a _game_ it's not much. _I_ want to get a hold of it to answer some questions. Nevermind the procedural part (nice as it is) but how did they handle reflections/refractions, shadows and the ability to illuminate other objects with the apparently high number of light sources in-game? And on an ATI video card, no less?

In short, I'm thinking about the technical education opportunities it might benefit outside of the engine itself.

Latest update is that the developer(s) are going to finish creating it as an engine (and sell it as such) before starting on making a game out of it. Given the circumstances, I think that's a win. I didn't want another stupid MMO anyway. :p

That's basically my impression at this point.

The combat demo that went out btw...  had some of the crappiest gameplay ever lol.

They seriously have a LOT of work to do to turn this into a game... and they appear to be working rather slowly.

It's on my "check out in 5 years and see if its still alive" list, but thats it heh ;)
