potterman28wxcv and me are working on a French translation (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=69352.0) of FSPort, however the Freespace font doesn't support some special characters, especially vowels with accents like é, è, à, û etc. that are required in many French words. It would be great to have that fixed if possible.

Support for OpenType or TrueType fonts would work wonderfully for this.
-
Indeed. It would be nice if we could get rid of the dependence on those custom font files.

Speaking of the custom font files, have we been able to get FontTool to work? Does the custom font file format even support anything beyond the standard characters that it uses now?

and the "ñ", very important to spanish translations as well.

Whichever one has the least license restrictions is more likely to get coded in.

Errrm. This has nothing at all to do with license issues. It all depends on what is easiest to code, more than anything.

The French release of FS1 should have come with a font file that contains French characters.
