Title: Image editing program
Post by: Buckshee Rounds on May 30, 2010, 07:19:11 am
Does anybody know of a good program that supports pcx? I tried photoshop but it doesn't want to work on my pc for some reason.

Paint.net (with plugins). Or just use irfanview to convert the image.

(Also: Wrong board. This should be in General Discussion).

GIMP and Paint Shop Pro 3.12 (I'm assuming later versions as well) support pcx formats.

Thanks for the replies. I used paint to put the image into 256 colours then converted with irfanview, worked a treat. Can someone tell me what the dimensions for pilot images are please?

I'd like to note here, that it's difficult to learn.  :P

Gimp or Paint.net

Paint.NET does support PCX but I've found Gimp produces PCX files that more reliably work with FS2.  I haven't touched PCX files in a long time though, and the need for that has been lessening all the time.

Only if you've never used an image editing program before. :P
Seriously though, I think GIMP is one of the best out there, especially considering it's free.  And if all you're doing is modifying PCX files, then you shouldn't have much trouble. :)

If you don't like GIMP's looks... try GIMPshop.

Tbh I think GIMP is a little much for me anyway. All I wanted to do was edit a happy face grenade for my pilot pic and then convert with irfanview. I appreciate the replies though.

You can easily do that with just gimp buckshee. Gimp is handy, it supports a looooot of formats, so you can edit with it, convert it to whatever you want. Don't use paint.net, it sucks, it has potential, but it sucks. It doesn't have as many tools and last i saw it no layer support (i hope they added layers finally).

You people and you're redundant program use :ick: Get something done with one ****ing program if you can don't be like other people who have like 3 or more media players.

I don't nominate gimpshop. I've used it before. Quite frankly putting all 3 windows of gimp inside of a big window (like adobe photoshop) was rather a hackish job that seemed tacked on, actually made it harder to use gimp, and was overall unnecessary. That and gimpshop is usually an older version of gimp several versions behind normal gimp (gimp was at 2.6.7 while gimpshop was 2.4.3, and yes 2.6.7 is that much better).

It depends what you're used to.

My only majorish complaint about GIMP is that it loads slowly. I don't have a point of comparison, however.

Yeah it's faster than Photoshop.  It's just a heavyweight compared to things like Paint.NET and PSP.  But I do think Gimp has some room to improve in that area.

Yes.  They did.

Gimp is handy
The UI is very confusing. Though I'm sure one gets used to it once one gets used to it.

Not really.

It's always about the number of tools, isn't it? I've made do with Paint.NET without any problems. Whatever I need to do, I can do with it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not 1999 anymore.

Gimp's ui is very similar to photoshops. If it's confusing, then learn how to use the program (these are rather advanced programs for power users, so really i don't expect anyone to just dive in and start using it and be comfortable). When i transitioned from photoshop to gimp, i didn't have a single problem.

What program to use, simply depends of what you wanna do with it. Of course, more advanced programs take more time to learn.
From simple stuff to advanced use:
- MS Paint
- Paint.NET
- GIMP

I'm lucky that I started learning Photoshop back in edition 3-4, I'm not sure I could use it nowadays without the previous knowledge, they've created a monster in many ways :(

Which is a shame cos I'm a retard at photoshop and it doesn't seem to want to run on my computer despite the 3GB ram. Thing about image editing programs too is I never seem to have images to edit. :) If the time comes when I really do need a picture/avatar etc. edited professionally I'll be a pest and ask here.

For ****s and giggles. which os do you run? The only os i couldn't install photoshop on was windows server 2003, only because the installer said "you can't install on this os", even though in reality the program would run just fine on that os.

I'm just asking because i'm curious. For the most part i don't have many images to edit myself or that i want to edit. I usually just pull a fast cropping, change in resolution, image format, and image compression.

I use Vista SP2. I can't remember what went wrong it was installing fine and then just spat an error message out. Likewise I usually just change resolution and most of the time using paint. :)
