Title: Hide and Seek/Run and Hide
Post by: ohzie on May 31, 2010, 11:26:58 pm
I'm running into a problem with this missing in the raider wars compaign. (You're in a raider fighter, you have to go scan some stuff, on your way to the asteroid base a ship warps in, you scan it and your cover is blown, so your wingmate is like "Hurry to the extraction point!" and then he dies, and there's no nav beacon for the extraction point.)

Basically, according to the map, the level is sort of like

                           *Extraction point                                                                                                    *Spawn Point

                                                                                        *Scan Objective

so I figured you fly over, scan the ship, and then just keep going a little to the right and eventually you'll reach your extraction point? I'm not getting that.

I don't know if I'm missing something glaring, or if my copy is bugged(I don't know what version I'm running, but it's the latest one on the downloadue.info apt repository, everything else has run so far now that I've installed Zathura)

any help on this mission would be greatly appreciated. :D Thanks!

Scan the base first.

Wow I had no idea that mission was so difficult to follow.  :eek2:

Scan the base first.
Then be ready to steal second base, then wait for the heavy hitter to blast it out of the park for the easy two runs in.  :drevil:

Put all energy in engines, u won't need fire power.

Just in maximun trust to raider base (Avoind fighters patrols), scan objetives, and run to the extration point.

I'm having the same problem as the original poster.
One difference though: Of the 3 systems you must scan (Sensors, Comm, Weapons) the Sensors cannot be scanned, no matter how close I get.
I guess that's the reason the mission doesn't continue?

Make sure you've got the actual sensor subsystem selected then check to see if it has an "X" crossbar through the circle pinpointing its location on your HUD.  If it's there, it means you have to approach the subsystem from a different angle to make the scan.

I'm having the same problem. I followed the instructions in this thread. Kicked up engines to full. Went straight to the base, scanned all the systems I was supposed to. Then went to the capital ship and scanned it. Then it said "proceed to extraction point." But I had no vector for the extraction point in my HUD; I had absolutely no idea in which direction I was supposed to go to get there.

Nevermind, solved the problem myself. For those still having problems: The XP is about 15 clicks from your position, so it won't be visible and you have to cycle through your targets until you find it. It looks like a circular space station with a Z in the middle. Once you target it, hard burn until you get to it. Then hang out there until help arrives.

Ok, so I tried again, and yes the sensor subsystem is selected. It also has the "X" crossbar in the targetbox however it has that regardless of which angle i approach from. I spent about half an hour trying every thinkable angle. The "X" never disappears and scanning never works.

Is it possible to cheat/skip the mission?

Sensors? Look for a white geodesic sphere on the base. That's your target, or very near it, as I recall. Comms are on the other side of the antenna dish from there, and weapons are on the other side of the rock. I think you need to be within 100 meters to scan it, and almost completely stationary.

If by "geodesic sphere" you mean that satellite dish thing then yea, that's what it looks like to me. The problem not finding it, scanning it is.

I've noticed the sensor dish slowly sweeps an angle of maybe 180 degrees, and it appears the orientation of the dish matters when scanning.  You may have to reposition yourself if you don't want to wait for the dish to point in the "proper" direction.  I've posted some pictures of angles you can approach the subsystem from for an easy scan.

If this doesn't work, the download is definitely bugged.  I would suggest redownloading to avoid further problems, but if you just want to skip ahead, fail the mission five times in a row and you will be asked if you want to skip to the next part of the campaign.  Firing on nearby vessels early on should accomplish this fairly quickly.

Nevermind, solved the problem myself. Raider Wars was released before the engine's navpoint system was implemented.  Back then when we wanted to direct players to points in space we couldn't rely on just the HUD, we had to use an actual model, complete with ship entry, to represent a waypoint.  The navpoint system we have now is generally superior, provided people remember where they mapped the proper key binding...

I think, but may be wrong, that the extraction waypoint in this mission is actually posted on the Escort List on the far right of the screen when the time comes.  Default key is E.

Thanks for posting those screenshots. Unfortunately I couldn't scan from those angles either. So I guess there is something wrong with my download.

If redownloading doesn't help I'll use the advance-by-failing method. Cheers for that hint! :)

Hey no problem.  If other people were reporting the bug I would suspect a more systemic problem of Raider Wars simply not porting to more recent versions of TBP smoothly.  But since other people have been able to get the scan I'm guessing it's just corrupted game data.  The error could be in the mission itself or the model file of the Asteroid Base, among other things.

the model isnt perfect, a common problem for TBP

Slasher stick that in TBP mantis and I'll try to get it fixed for a future Zathras.
