Title: Hi need help with installation/starting game
Post by: useruser1237 on June 02, 2010, 08:51:07 pm
Hi, I recently bought Freespace 2. It installed fine from what I can tell. The problem is, when I hit play it says that I have -201 MB Ram space. Now I have several hundred GB open so that can't be the actual problem. It also says that I should check if I'm using smartdrive because that messes it up and I looked and couldn't find it anywhere. Anyone have any idea on what the problem is/solutions?

Thanks.

Use FS2_Open. The retail executable is not able to deal with modern RAM sizes correctly. Instructions on how to install it can be found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=61606.0

Also,

it says that I have -201 MB Ram space. Now I have several hundred GB open so that can't be the actual problem.
there's a slight difference between RAM and HDD space. RAM is used to temporarily store data that executed programs need. HDD is used to store data more permanently. In modern machines, RAM is counted in gigabytes; I believe a semi-decent gaming rig would include at least 4GB, and a serious hardcore madness machine might have 12GB.

It indeed is not your HDD space that FS2 is complaining about; it's the RAM. FSO should fix the problem.

You can also run retail in compatibility mode.  I usually run mine in windows XP service pack 2 and it works fine for both Freespace 1 and 2
