What is the biggest ship ever built my a modder, as well as the biggest structure (like an installation)?
-
I'm not 100% certain, but I suspect Inferno takes both with the (to my knowledge) unreleased Gargant being the biggest ship and the Earth model being the biggest 'structure', though there may be other planet models out there that I've forgotten about.
[Edit] I should note that in my opinion as a FREDder, any time you get over a certain size a ship becomes basically scenery. A Super Star Destroyer, if the SWC intends to include one, is pretty much the biggest you can go and still get some semblence of activity out of a ship, so a ship that is 50+ km long is not going to be very useful for anything other than being in the background and looking menacing.
-
I think that Galahad IV from Over the Top is larger than the Earth model due it possessing a ring system.
Also, the SI Hara is larger than the Gargant, or so I believe.
-
TrashMans' Whitehall is also pretty humongous.
-
Don't forget the unused AI Pyrgos (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/AI_Pyrgos).
-
Planet models, namely Galahad IV, for the largest object.
Largest installation in the GTI Atalntis, an enormous shipyard.
Gargant is the largest warship made for FS.
Also, there are some models in TBP, which are also humongous.
Vorlon Planet Killer, Drakh Mothership and surface models are the largest ones there.
-
I'm intrigued by this "Gargant", does anyone have a pic?
-
Just be aware that ships and structures of this size are basically useless as anything but decoration or plot points.
In fact, anything above the size of a corvette is very difficult to create a satisfying interaction with unless you're a very talented FREDder.
-
Long time ago, I've made a quick replacement for Gragant.
http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.516
It's not too good though, but Gargant also doesn't look very good.

Well, you could always do death star trench run style missions with them :P
Its hard to get the AI to cooperate though.
-
Even then, it's still just scenery. It's not doing anything, it's just there. Which can work in some situation, but it needs to be done with care and, above all, rarely. Me? If given the choice for a mod, I'll take another another cruiser over a massive juggernaut any day. Hell I'd take an interestingly-shaped mid-sized asteroid over a juggernaut.

Or a few nice Transports, passenger liners, civvie installations....
-
Needs for large ships are pretty much sadisfied by Inferno.
Smaller civilan vessels, transports, cruisers and especially Shivan medium-sized warships are what the community needs (seriously, two Shivan Corvette models in the entire community?).
A Shivan corvette other than Scylla or Moloch would certainly come in handy for somebody.
-

Yes. Very much yes. Can't ever have too many of those. In fact, one of the best parts of working on a mod/TC rather than stock FS2 is that you're likely to have a proper civilian fleet to work with. It allows for so many more possibilities :)
-

How about needs for decent large ships?
Okay, sorry.
-
Those are satisfied by Esarai.

Haha, yeah.

Well somewheres I've got my frankenship that larger than the Gragant LOL
-

Well I've found the Gargant to be quite impressive, though I would like to see it with a ship like Sathanas in the background. Any chance you could dig up a pick of your "frankenship"??

Isn't the Gargant just a stretched Rakshasa or something?
EDIT: this seems to be the old one
(http://inferno.hard-light.net/GargSpam02.jpg)
It's a stretched Sath with some extra spikes, but unfortunately it ends up looking pretty bad.
This render, however, is sweet:

No, that's the new Gigas.
The pictured ship is the current Gargant as far as I know.

Found it.... there's a bit of star wars, star trek, homeworld 1, freespace 2, inferno, wing commander, B5 in it. And I want to add some detailing from the USG Ishimura.

Blue is the Collosus and red I'm not sure of might be Gigas

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
-
It looks like you took the Kushan Mothership, slapped a Nebulon B on the bottom, gave it some Centauri wings, attached a Terran Confederation vessel to the front, and then slapped the front end of an Earth Alliance Omega on that.

To me, it looks like you have watched unhealthy amounts of sci-fi.

Impossible. There's no such thing as too much sci-fi.

There's also the Higara mothership too.., wing tips are kushan? battlecruiser. Also under the wing bases there's a pair of Orions. Honestly I never really intend to finish this. Last time I got it imported into fs2 it had z-clipping issues due to it's size.
Here's a couple more updated pics:

I think the Ishimura would fit nicely between the forward hanger section and central bridge area.

LOL or just plain bored and out of ideas at the time
Edit: Gigas is now ~38.5km?
-
Edit: Gigas is now ~38.5km?
The Gigas that came from Inferno R1 is precisely 20.6 km in length. From what I've heard, the Gargant is about 40 klicks in length.
Unless some changes have been made....
Anyways, even the Gigas is too big to be practical for almost any mission, and the Gigas is a mere blip compared to your monstrosity, Scoob.
-
TBH, that monstronity could be a quite decent ship after rescaling and proper texturing.
Only "envirnoment" (planets, large space stations and asteroids) should reach that size.
-
Methink the Frankenship is awesome.
-
A good point in favor of this huge... thing, is that it's just not compact, which means that there is a lot of space to move around, and potentially less collision issues for the AI.
-
Oh good it's in R1, I was afraid I'd have to ask for someone to upload the Gigas again...
I love it compared to that "re-interpretation" on fsmods.
:)
I hate how I lost my screenie of it destroying the Ent-D with a beam as wide as Fed ship on the first shot!
Heh...
-
If your're talking about Shiva, it's not a reinterpretation of Gigas, but of Gargant.
Description states otherwise, but it was a mistake and FSMods don't allow correcting descriptions (as far as I know).
I uploaded it when I still had the habit of posting things and then editing typos out.
-
what is the BF shivan ship that is alongside the vishnan one at the end of blue planet? is that a giga?
-

Nope, that is Nuke's Dante.
-
don't forget a full scale deathstar was once built, as a detail box test.
-
I thought that was a Borg Cube?
-
:wtf:
Speaking of the Death Star, is FotG modelling one?
-

Initial inquiries point to"'no."

I put a LP one in at 64km... Found out that big things are not good. most of it became = No collide.
Plus looked like crap ultra pixelated garbage.
Then Omni came and wow'ed us with his Detail Box one...
And never released it. (Bastard...)

I don't think the GTVAngelion counts, right? It's made up of several ships cobbled together.
-

In FRED, that is.
The GVSJ Khonsu has no excuse for being the ugliest ship ever created for FS2. Narrowly beating the Sechat-Thor.
-
I don't think the Khonsu is a superjuggernaut.
Its just like four sobeks fused to a hatshepsut, barely the size of the Colossus.
-
Narrowly beating the Sechat-Thor.
Got an image of this one?

:wtf:
Wowwww. What the hell. That's just as bad as the Khonsu if not worse.
-
I think the Ket-ka wins in fuglyness, though it's not a Juggernaut-type ship.
I mean come on, it has a pixle-thick section of hull protruding from its bow.
Then again it's an older model than most.
-

It's actually a stretched and inverted Osiris.
-
Before you said that, I wouldn't have seen the resemblance. :nervous:
-
Anything over 20km is overkill and not very functional.
I'll never make anything bigger than that.
-
What? that looks more like a Mentu glued to the front part of a Sobek.
-
What? that looks more like a Mentu glued to the front part of a Sobek.
It's an Aten glued to a Sobek, actually. And the mapping is horrendous.
-
How can that be better than the Khonsu, which actually has...well, not-retarded mapping.
-

:(
-
As far as I know, excluding planets, these are the biggest ships:
1. Gargant - around 40 km
2. Hara - around 30 km (I think)
3. Icanus - 20 km
4. Gigas - 20 km
5. Vishnan Preserver - 19 km?
6. Super Star Destroyer - 17-19 km (NOT 50 km)
7. Dante - 12 km
And of course, the non-Shivan looking SH Shiva
Note that ships in Green are those that are released and used, those in Brown aren't released, and those in Lime are released, but aren't used in any particular mission.
Any other?
-
You forgot the Sechat-Thor and the Khonsu. And this ugly thing (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTI_Atlantis).
-
Snail, the Khonsu is 5.5 km long...
It doesn't make that list, not by a long shot.
Unless of course, you have a different Khonsu than the one I have, which would be weird.
-
Oops. Yeah... Well the Secaht-Thor does...
-
And this ugly thing (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTI_Atlantis).
Heh, that's almost as big as the Pyrgos. Longest dimension (51km) about equal, but the Pyrgos is bigger in the other dimensions.
-
Atlantis station 22km
-
The FS-RTS mod (i.e. the FS2 RTS in FS2 engine, which Nuke + I started, eons ago) has a 200-kilometer giant textured quad. Does that count?
-
So, there we have it. So far the biggest ships ever (excluding planets) are the Pyrgos and the Atlantis.
But, they're still no match for the Gargant, right... :nervous:
-

You mean Pyrgos and Frankenship :p
(Pyygros is bigger than the Atlantis?)
Edit: yup.....
Also now with the Ishumra added on the frank sits at about 100km.
-
Ishmura? Where the hell did you get that term?
-
I think he means the Ishimura planet-cracker from Dead Space.
-
Is it even from FS?
-

:wtf:
from Dead Space.
Emphasis added.
-
I think we are dealing with a kid.

So, it's got no business being in this thread. Cool beans.
