Well I've recently discovered both modding tools for Freespace and some old models of Halo ships on my computer and decided to put two and two together. Just thought I'd share some preliminary results:

It's my first time modding anything so I'm still rather iffy on how to implement the textures properly.

Looks good to me.
-
Cool stuff mate.
-
Nice, but looks retail-ish.
Using Mediavps effect would look much better.
Ah, by the way, you heard about FS2 Halo mod?
-
You know the Seraph fire plasma bolts and not beams, right ?
-
Looks good for preliminary results. The textures should look a little better under MediaVP enhancement, and tabling issues such as armaments should be pretty easy to fix.
My question is how you're going to make these assets fighter-centric; from what little I know about Haloverse space combat, the big ships definitely do most of the work...
-
Awesomeness.
-
The last shot made me think of an Ori ship.
-
Ok, so I decided to try and take the CCS Battlecruiser from Halo 3 and put it into Freespace. Aside from having to essentially rebuild the normal map from scratch, I think it worked out pretty well. Also figured out how to use the mediavp effects:

Oh, and Seraphs fire pulse lasers AND plasma bolts :p
I've heard of the FS2 Halo mod but other than someone telling me that it was dead, not much else.
-
Well, it is dead, due to every project leader vanishing without a trace after a few weeks.
-
Are those materials imported from the Halo games, or did you made them from scratch ?

It has been reviewed some time ago, but seems to be dead again.

The models and textures are from the Halo games for the most part, considering my below average skill there, but they are tweaked in some ways to get them working (like lowering vertex count, changing the normal maps, adding turrets) . So yeah, no credit should go to me for models/textures. On the upside it means that I can spit out the ships in record time.
-
That's awesome. Let me know what else you get converted.
-
IIRC M$ has a very strict policy regarding materials exported from the games. And by strict, I mean "you can't use them, gtfo" policy. Especially since exporting from the games means modding the xbox, which is simply forbidden AFAIK (well, that's not as true as it used to be since Halo 1 and 2 are now on PC, but anyway). I hope you know what you're doing.
-
Well I figure if nothing terrible has happened to the many halo mod groups aside from getting a banned Xbox when going on xbox live, I'm not too worried. And from what I've seen MS doesn't care much unless there are profits being made or if it interferes with a future project ( like Halogen vs Halo Wars), and I don't see a Halo flight sim happening any time soon.

Didn't it come to your mind that they may have made their assets from scratch ?
Anyway, it's your call. You do something illegal, you take the risk.
-
Oh don't be so butthurt about it Matth :p

False, if the games are on PC. I cannot find it now, but there was a page spelling out Microsoft's policy on game modding- the general gist of it was so long as it's for fun and not for profit, odds are that it's ok.
Also, don't forget that we probably don't get a lot of attention from the outside world, meaning fun-ruining M$ lawyer-eyes are not terribly likely to come prying here.
-
Hey, like I said, it's his call ! Just pointing things out.

Well...not exactly a flight sim but umm:

In other news, I'm currently fixing the many errors that have popped up. Have redone and longsword and the CCS is essentially done. Few glitches with plasma torpedoes though.
Edit: Better links.
