Title: report user function
Post by: headdie on June 08, 2010, 03:41:50 am
With the occasional arrival of spambots on the forum I was wondering if it would be possible to add a button/function to peoples user profiles to report the user account as a possible spambot for admins to investigate as with the report post function

Yeah, that would be totally cool. Sending PMs to admins is sort of hard, since sending it only to one or some of them wouldn't be that effective, and trying to remember all the admins is sort of tricky as well. And for me, pressing "Report post" feels sort of dumb. Some time later I'll be like "New mail?! Who the bloody hell keeps sending me... no wait.". And it's not really the moderators' business since they can't do much. Especially if the bot keeps on spamming, no matter what.

Doesn't look like this feature exists in SMF 2.0, so no, it won't be added.

The Report to Moderator button is an alternative, though, and it still works pretty well.

While we're at it, is there any way in SMF to flag a post as having already been reported. I really don't need 5 different emails all reporting the same spammer. :D

For that matter guys, you only need to report a spammer once. We automatically clean up all the crap he's done when we clean up a single thread. There's no need to report every single spam thread.

Any way to add the ability to suspend a users activity to moderators or at least global moderators?  Kind of like a time out until reviewed by an admin?  Usually there is at least a global mod or 2 available on IRC but they really can't do anything other then try to stay ahead of the bots by deleting posts.

Oh and this just might be speculation but some of them seem to lie dormant for awhile and somehow activate when no admins are present.

I thought Fury and kara mask their activity on HLP for this very reason.

Dear lord, that would be useful.  I'm starting to get tired of finding that flood of new e-mails about a single post, especially since I'm a lowly single-forum mod who can't do much about the problem anyway. :p

Wow now your making me feel bad.  I only see about 2 or 3 reports a month.

Yeah, yeah. Necromancdged or whatever. Shut up.

People, seriously. If there is a bot roaming around, report it. ONCE. There's really nothing like waking up in the morning and checking your email to find out that some bot has posted a dozen times here and SOMEONE has bravely reported each and every one of those posts. Really. One report would be enough. Especially since us moderators can't really do anything, apart from deleting posts or threads.

Seconded.  If a bot has more than one post, only report one of them.  The bot can't be banned until an administrator logs on, and once it is, it only takes two additional clicks to delete every single post in one fell swoop.

We've just found the missing link connecting Gastropoda (Mollusca, Cyrtosoma) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastropoda) to Asteroidea (Echinodermata, Asterozoa) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroidea). This is a great day for Paleontology.
