Now, I have no intention (not to mention the skill needed) to make this, but I was just wondering if it would be technically possible to make a SSE mod for Freespace. Mostly because it would be awesome to take part in those BoE battles that nearly every one is. Would the game be able to handle that many ships? Even if low poly? And could the AI be tweaked to act like the SSE AI?

Edit: I'm a retard?
I've discussed this with a friend, I feel it'd be fairly doable, if ships were designed with optimization in mind, and with the right mission design, the 'feel' could be captured pretty well too (as in, massive swarm tactics, expendable fighters, respawn).
If you can find some nice concept art for the details of the SoaSE fighters and stuff, I think I can get a modeller for this project. :P

You'd probably have to ask around the SoaSE community. IIRC, there was a project a while back to do an FS2 mod, but I think it has died.

No, I meant the other way around. SSE stuff in Freespace.

Yeah I just got it see my edit.

That just won't work since Sins only has one fighter and one bomber per faction, which get sent out in massive quantities, and die in massive quantities.
BoE is exactly what it would be, and absolutely nothing the player would do would matter since his ability to deal damage would be far, far less than what a single battleship or even a heavy cruiser could do.
Oh, and in Sins every combat ship has shields. Except fighters.
-
So what if fighters are sent in massive quantities and die in massive quantities?
Make it so that players can respawn, problem solved :P
Having more fighters just means that your ability to order your allied wings around are more important.
With the correct mission design, anything is possible.
Even if its not, "rebalancing" for the purpose of gameplay isn't out of the question.

It wasnt so much about actually making a difference in the battle, but in seeing these massive battles from a pilots point of view. And respawn helps too.
-
Heck respawns actually make sense for Advent fighters, since they're controlled by someone on the carrier and not an actual pilot on the ship :P
"Oh, your RC fighter died? Here, have another. Fresh off the factory..."
