Although I have yet to think of a good use for this, I was wondering if "turreting a turret is possible", or if it's been tried. The idea is that you would have a normal two part turret, with a base and arm. On the base of the turret, you would have a normal, single part turret parented to it. Could the single part turret work, moving with the base of the multi parter? I realize that the turret would likely not move to aim the single part turret.

Pretty sure this isn't possible for 2 reasons. First targeting gets thrown off for any subsystems on a subobject except for multi part turrets. Second turrets on a rotating subobject (such as the turret base) aren't really supported. Can't remember the exact explanation but I believe it was something along the lines that the FOV and target select is based from the original position not the rotated position.

Is a turreted turret possible?
:eek2:
Holy recursiveness, Batman!

Actually it's not as crazy as it sounds. I tried many times to get a single part working on another single part or subobject. Never tried a multipart/singlepart combo though.
-
You can put turrets on destroyable subobjects like the extra turrets on the NTF Boadaciea right?
Movement...now that's an entirely different story altogether.
-
Turrets on subobjects do not target correctly. The Boadaciea has no such turrets. Each is off of detail0 or in it's case rcorvetta.
-
Indeed, you can shot off a subobject and turrets will remain.

Wow, for a moment I thought someone bumped Trashman's old thread from 2+ years ago.
He did a variation of turret on a turret (somewhat successfully).
I think it was use a normal multi-part turret and then add FIXED single part turrets.
Not sure, you'd have to research it yourself.
:D

Nah, it was a missile turret on a gun turret, but it's not actually another turret - just a different set of fire points and a different loadout.
Or to put it simple - a turret with 4 fire points, 2 with guns, 2 with missiles.
-
Thanks for the clarification, I couldn't remember...

Actually, something like this would be really cool for some far-out stuff, like a WWII mod, of all things. In truth, there were several ships I've seen that would have an AA turret placed atop a large main gun battery. Now, if the rotational axis of the turret was directly beneath where the AA turret was, you could just have a turret cleverly placed atop the other one, essentially floating in space (but not appearing as such). However, as that sort of thing probably wouldn't work so perfectly in real life, a proper solution would be great.

Actually that would work. Esentailly two disinct turret, and the upper one is actually placed "on the hull", but floating above it.
As long as there's a destroyed model for the big turret the smaller turrets sits upon, it should work without problems.
-
The bottom turret would have to be much larger and have barrels set up to make sure that two turrets won't intersect.
It should be possible to do though.
-
Aw, and here I was thinking somebody was making a 40k mod...

Yo dawg, I heard you like guns. So I put guns on your guns so you can shoot while you shoot.

Turrets were actually mounted on turrets, dawg...:

Well, it makes sense, if the turret is so big that placing a smaller turret next to it would either limit the big one's rotation, or wouldn't be able to cover a region on the other side of the big one.
