So, got the Freespace bug and back to playing the game again, downloading oodles of mods and giving them a playthrough.
That aside, are there any mods/standalone "missions" that let you into the captains chair of one of the capital ships in the game? Of course, Its not a game that particularly encourages or makes allowances for it, but im curious all the same. (The only result I got didnt seem to work).

Well, it won't work as a standalone mission, it'll have to include at least a table mod.
You also can't do much.
And the screen will basically be permanently pulsating red.
But its not hard to do.
And its also no fun, so I don't think anyone's released anything like that. (Flying a capship, if you mean that).
If you want to be "command" then play Windmills, I've heard it was pretty good and I think does that...

Do an HLP forum search for war.zip that one lets you pilot a Deimos.
With no tbl mods :p
It worked since retail.

Also made for retail.
I've also worked on capship piloting in the past and created a control system for it, but I never released anything due to problems with such things as "redout" whenever a ship is hit.
It was also a bit problematic due to amount of keys it remapped, but if you'd like to make a campaign that uses it, I can send a SEXP list to you (I no longer have a mod on which this mission ran, but SEXPs remain the same) and directions on how to make them work.
