Now that I don't want to make a new thread with alike problems, I just do it over here.
system: amd athlon iix2 250, gf 9600gt 512mb, 4gb ram 667mhz, win7 ultimate 64 bit. problems: several debugger interventions at startup, my biggest success was the deleting of the corrupt .vp file in the root folder, so that i came to see the intro video once, not again since that happens some minutes ago. black screen after that.
it starts off with some missing cursor bitmap, then the animation cursor can not be loaded, followed by "could not load choosepilot -m" and "could not load in pop2". after that i get a black screen and have to end the process via task manager.
the complete logfile:

ERROR:
Web cursor bitmap not found. This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation, e.g. by modifying or removing the retail VP files;
3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all. (Note that installing FreeSpace Open does NOT remove the need for a FreeSpace 2 installation.)
Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable file to the FreeSInt3(): From g:\fso\fs2_rc3_export\code\globalincs\windebug.cpp at line 1155
i hope that can be solved somehow, now that i am a huge FS fan. i'd also love to use the editor and do stuff, but it doesn't work, either.
ah, btw, the problems are the same at 3.6.10 and 3.6.12RC3.
thanks for reading,

:wtf:
Okay, so, I have just one question.
Have you actually installed FS2?
Because what I am seeing here tells me that, apart from the multi-voice-pack.vp, there are no FS2-specific files in the directory the executable is in.
Please take a screenshot of the fs2 directory in question.
Also, I_'m going to split this topic, as your problem is in a wholly different category.
-
Yeah, man, you don't have FreeSpace 2 installed.
You can get it from GoodOldGames for $6.

Error messages can be helpful, y'know. I would take a closer look at no. 3 here.

Yes. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180353#msg1180353)

both FS2 (original, patched to v1.2) and the OSP version are installed, but at different locations. i'll try to install into the original folder, but not this evening and not tomorrow before the evening, because i'm busy and stuff. i'll report immediately.
however, thx for splitting the topic. report at maybe 2000CET tomorrow.
//EDIT: my total boredom right now made me integrate the one folder into the other. works fine now i guess... but where is the hint to install it into the original game folder? i have never read any clear comment about it.
-
Ah right. Yes, it all has to go into the same folder.
-
but where is the hint to install it into the original game folder? i have never read any clear comment about it.
The online installer asks you to point it toward the FS2 install directory.
The manual install guide (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0) consistently talks about installing the FSO stuff to the FS2 directory.
It's actually very clearly mentioned.
