Title: Redemption - Looking for interested persons
Post by: dANGER boy on July 13, 2010, 07:48:28 am
I've had ideas in my head that have finally accumulated to the point where I am setting out to create a new campaign.  This project is very much in its infancy and could use some TLC (tender loving care) from others who are interested in helping develop it.  It doesn't exactly follow along with the official Freespace campaigns.  For those interested in joining me, here are some facts about the campaign that are spoiler-free.

Facts

Campaign title: Redemption
Motto: "Not all those who wander are lost."
Era: FS2.  Campaign will use FS2 ships.
Protagonist: Ensign Michael Hughes (the player, of course)
Story: Take on the role of Ensign Michael Hughes, a once well-respected Lieutenant in the 13th Grim Reapers squadron but now disgraced after insubordiation and a mission that went horribly wrong.  Desperate for qualified and talented pilots, the Galactic Terran Alliance has relegated him to trivial patrol duty at the GTI Hellespont in orbit around Jupiter.  Ensign Hughes soon finds himself caught up in a sinister plot to destabilize the solar system and overthrow Earth's government.  Redemption is something worth dying for.

Key Features

-Character-driven story
-Voice acted (?)
-Takes place solely within our solar system, with missions taking you from Mercury to the asteroid belt, to the atmosphere of Saturn, and to Pluto
-A wide range of missions that all connect coherently.  HUGE battles and small skirmishes, escort missions, and surgical strikes at enemy outposts for starters
-Use of cutscenes to develop the story

Like I said, there is still much to decide.  The story still needs to be hammered out and several key decisions must be made such as the presence of voice acting and custom content (models, sounds, music, etc).  If you're even vaguely interested in this project and think it might stand a chance, contact me and I can fill you in on more details and you can see if you want to join up!

As the project becomes more concrete, additional help from modellers, voice actors, and others might be required if that's the road the project takes.  I will hopefully have the story finalised soon and a short demo posted so people can decide if they want to help develop the project.

One small, tiny nitpick here: If this is using FS2 ships, but takes place in Sol, how did Terra get the GTVA designs?

Other than that, sounds interesting.

Working on that one.  :) Let me sleep on it and I'll fill that plot hole.  Perhaps....hmmm....maybe....(brain fart)

Like I said, I'll sleep on it.  What I find most interesting and motivational for me is going to be creating these missions in our solar system.  I want this campaign to "strike home" and feel grounded in something familiar.  This might require a lot of custom content...something that would greatly increase the development time of the project.

Steal the skyboxes from BP2!

Also, the already-released Director's Cut of BP1 has a big starfield that's astronomically accurate for Sol. If it takes your fancy it might come in handy (woo rhyme.)

Well, I gots to go see what they have and then get permission to use them.  I don't want to come off as a stealer, free-loaders, or just lazy modder! :)

Modding is a collaborative effort, mate. If you like it and it's okay with the creators, use it. And I believe we've always been of the belief that all our finished assets should be open for use.

With very few, and rather public, exceptions, generally if someone posts it here it's available for use provided you credit the creator. Many of the more popular mods have pages on the Wiki that list credits.

If you are pulling something from a released modpack it's okay to credit the team as a whole, rather than track down who made the mesh, who refined it, who added the turrets, who made the textures, who created the POF, who made the shine maps and glow maps, etc.
