I've been pondering on an idea for a new juggernaught for quite some time. finally I have a radical concept that would combine attributes of the SJ Sathanas and the GTD Golgotha. I can post more info later, but there's a catch. I don't have access to the proper utilites to make this ship (namely Truspace and a good 3D modeler), so I'd need help in its construction. if anyone is willing to lend a hand, please post! I'm very determined to make this thing as I think it could tie into a nice campaign of its own. thank you for taking the time to read this, I can only hope it will generate some interest umong people with experience in modding.

actually you're not very far off. I've devised a pretty ingenius system for the main cannon. four large prongs (hence the Sathanas resemblence) fire "charger beams" into a central power shaft. the shaft charges the energy and releases it as one blast. the beam is devastating, but its drawbacks include a slow recharge rate and a very small firing arc. I chose to implement this idea into a juggernaught because its the only type of ship capable of carrying such a weapon. Naturally, it will have flak guns, AAAfs, and other beam cannons to hold off ships that aren't in front of it. I realize that this isn't something incredibly spectacular but all the same, I am relativly new to this (though I purchased FS2 the christmas it came out). if no one can help me, than thats fine, but I would really like to get this made. oh well, I had to at least give it a shot.

I've allways wondered why people don't come up with more inventive weapons for massive jugganauts. True the large weapons give lots of special effects, but a little variation would be nice (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

sorry I'm not more original. I've always thought that a massive weapon like that would have much a much greater effect on ships. though I do have another weapon in mind.
this weapon will still use the charger beams. however, instead of firing into a central unit, the beams would fire into other mobile cannons spread thoughout the battlefield. after the individual units are charged, the beam would fire. there will be four "mobile cannons"...sorry i have to go, i'll continue later.

okay I'm back. as I was saying, there'd be four of these mobile cannons strewn about the battle field. While the beams from these individual cannons would not be s strong as my super-cannon idea, each cannon would have a bit more strength than one Sathanas cannon (LRB?) and would provide an excellent firing arc. not only that, the cannons would have the ability to either attack individual targets or focus on a single target, therefore hammering the lone ship. once again, this only a concept, and I really have no way of constucting this myself. I hope that this is a little more original.

I tried, but the sheer size crashed FRED2.
It doesn't really work very well. You know how long it takes to go at full burn from front to back of the Colossus. That's 6 km.
The Death Star has a diameter of 120km.

I heard someone had made a stable planet that was realistic size...and that's a heckuva lot more than 120km. It should be possible.

Yeah, I'm testing it again. I just realised that my older model was 120 000 TRUESPACE meters. Which is a LOT in FS meters (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
AND I think it had a few too many polys.
I've got something I'm trying to test right now. A sphere, 400 polys so it's definately not over the limit, 120 FREESPACE clicks diameter.

Awesome...now we just add a big pit for the gun, and some simple structures on the surface( like towers) and we're getting there.
Add a tube to a reactor core and lots and lots of turrets, and maybe make a seperate ship object that is just a flat platform with guns that you would embed in the larger model in FRED, and you have a death star.
Mess with the geometry and make it a distorted sphere-like object, give it lots of spikes, and texture it Shivan, and then we have something very scary indeed. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

But I might do something to it, like add a tube into the core... I could make a seperate subobject for the inside core (not intersecting, completely inside the other object). Actually, I think I'll do this in Blender, since I still don't know squat about TS modeling.
But I think I'll have a go at the Eclipse-class super star destroyer. My fave SW ship.

I think the original Death Star laser was like delta_7890's original super-cannon idea, wasn't it. There were 4/5 (?) blue beams that fired into a focus point before, a coupla seconds later, unleashing a massive blast that blew up a cap-ship in one.

Quick question: Anybody ever thought of using a Geodesic(sp?) sphere instead of a longitudinal sphere? It's probably more polys, but the faces would all be about the same size. That would make it possible to create a standard repeating "surface" object, complete with turrets & towers, that you could embed in the face using FRED. I even have some ideas for making alignment easy. You could have several different types of standard surface segments that you could tile however you wanted, even.

Death star fired five or six green beams that came together into one big beam.
You know what? The FS universe won't need a death star with very many anti-fighter turrets. It would have a strong enough hull that surface attack by fighters or bombers would be no threat- in fact, the only areas that would need antifighter defense would be around the main turrets, hangar bays, and subsystems. THAT would be a lot easier to implement in a Shivan death star- the station would be huge, but there would only be turrets around the major offensive beams and the subsystems.
Oh yeah, lots of defense around the reactor tube, which would have a lid that would have to be blown open. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Anyways, the total turret count would be much less- still a lot, but by no means impossible.
