Title: Browse The Galaxy! Free!
Post by: Fineus on April 21, 2002, 02:38:25 am
Thats right ladies and gents, yours for the total sum of a 10Mb download - browse the galaxy in OpenGL from your desktop!

Click Me! (http://ennui.shatters.net/celestia/)

Seriously, this program rocks for anyone with a passing interest in the Galaxy, and it looks pretty as well :)

Hey, you guys wanna see something REALLY cool?  Focus on the Sun.  Then, turn on constelation views, so it draws lines between the stars in the constellations.  Next, click on another star somewhere in one of the constellations, then zoom in on it.  You'll realize how incredibly 3D those "flat" constellations are.  Totally unrecognizable from ANYWHERE but Earth.  I've always known it in my head, but now I've seen it....

This is an incredible piece of software - thanks for pointing it out!  (-:

I just got a wonderful idea, if we could just modify the Celestia engine and add an online multiplayer settings then transform it into 360o Node Wars 3D :drevil:
then possibly we could then make a single player version with AI, then that gose along with having game bots ;7 :drevil:

So long as it's an accurate and useful representation, and can possibly be modified to include more objects, then this looks like it could be good.

*adds to the growing list of 3D star maps*

All I can say is - this is EXACTLY what i've been looking for.

An accurate 3D representation of the galaxy...is you just tagged a database onto it it will be better than redshift!

downloading now :)

Ahhh, but that's the beauty of an open source project.  Who needs the REAL galaxy, when we can create our own which'll be FAR more interesting.

That's an amazing engine, by the way.  Wow.

There's a bunch of mirrors. D/load this program (http://download.com.com/redir?pid=10037157&merid=67776&mfgid=67776<ype=dl_dlnow&lop=link&edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3002-20-10037157&ontId=20&dlrs=1&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload9.speedbit.com%2Fdap5.exe). It'll speed up your d/loads a bit and autmomatically searches for any mirrors there are. It's also free (there are banner ads though :()

There are plenty of more suitable realtime engines for NW out there - 5th Sun, Stellar Frontier and SAIS to name a few...

A good point - I've got some mods for it and it seems incredibly easy to make a fully functioning system. We could have a 3D starmap of GTVA space within a month - complete with nodes (since any model can be put in there...).

In relation to the first case you quoted, Eta Carinae is a real star, and of quite significance to astronomers at that. Omitting this star could be seen as quite an oversight.

A while ago I began developing a 3D node map for the Freespace universe, however it was in model form instead of a readily openable and browsable program. There were still a few gaps to fill concerning fictitious stars, but I'm sure something could've been worked out. At least someone else can now work on such a premise with relative ease.

*waits for the download queue to free up*

I suppose so. But no battles... not without some major changes, anyway. All the previous already support that. ;) But yes, for browsing, this would kick some m34t. :D

I finally managed to download the program. Very nice, pretty much has to be the best 3D map I've seen so far. Hopefully they'll make it easier to insert new stars and expand upon the (real) universe.

It's so good to look at the night sky from Pi Puppis, don't ask me why :)

If you want something really weird to look at - get into a position to view the orbits of the first few planets of Sol, speed up time and watch Earths orbit (you have to speed time up a lot)... something is badly wrong there!

Ummm.... Earth's not supposed to do that...

Apparently it's a known problem and they'll be working on the mechanics further. But it's all still good.

I don't think it'll be that much of a problem, it happens something like 2 million years from now or so. :p

It was kinda fun watching all the planets eventually lose their orbits and disappear into nothingness after a few hundred thousand years. Laughingly inaccurate, but fun....

....at least, I hope it's inaccurate
