Title: Looking for a large asteroid model
Post by: Sushi on July 17, 2010, 12:07:10 pm
What the subject says. I'm looking for a biggish asteroid model, although I suppose any size could be used and re-scaled. I'm not really sure where to find them: what mods have such a model that I could use?

The only one I know of is the BTRL asteroid, but that's probably a bit bigger than what I need... although it could possibly do in a pinch.

Uhm, I remember a package featuring asteroids of various sizes. They're only slightly bigger than regular FS asteroids, so chances they won't satisfy your request if you need bigger stuff...

Look into BTRL for some enormous asteroids.

Sorry, I somehow missed this.
Also, there are two other, smaller asteroids in there, maybe one of them would fit (they're a lot smaller than the Scar Asteroid).
There's also Unholy Alliance, which should be available somewhere (on Volition Watch?), but these models are very lo-poly.

Just in case someone has the ability to convert these into POF's with good mapping:

Celestia Motherlode Asteroids (http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/asteroids.php)

These models do have certain issues with their "polar" areas, though. Both model and mapping wise. It would be of great benefit to everyone to have a bunch of somewhat realistic asteroids available (coughblueplanetcough).

Seem perfect, especially for campaigns taking place in Sol... but the filesizes seem the way too low for detailled models. Why so?

1. Everything is compressed, and data such as models typically compresses relatively well.

2. Data files are just data (orbits etc.).

3. Many of the models have relatively low-resolution textures.

4. The models themselves are not exactly epitomes of high polygon modeling, mostly due to lack of accurate source data for most of the asteroids.

If you look at the actual asteroid model replacement packs they're larger files than the rest (which are usually individual compressed model and/or just textures).

Yeah, this is sometimes confusing.
The 231KB small 3DS file of the "Anne Frank" Asteroid equals 11500polys in Max.

Fine, then. :) For a moment I thought the models weren't that great.

Anyone willing to get them ingame...?

Some of them i found on the webs, aren't visually that great despite having 10k+ polys.
TBH, the Asteroids from the MVPs look far better then most of the Celestia ones.
You'd have to put a lot of effort in bringing them into FSO.

There are a few exceptions though, with a poly range of 5k - 15k, which lack in some cases smoothing and in all cases the uv map.

How big is big in meters. Do you need Lods?

Big enough to hide a destroyer behind (or in): so several thousand meters across. Although I could certainly use some medium-size ones to good effect as well.

Where do the ones in that picture come from? They look nice.

Also, don't particularly care about LODs, unless they're super-expensive to render.

I'm shocked you didn't ask me for this one :P

Feel free to use it btw, just as long as you remember to give me the credit. Though I probably need to update the texture a bit with some new displacement map tricks I learned.

Is 3000m enough? 5000m? And the medium sized ones, 250 - 1000m?
The textures are a bit fugly from close range, though.

All Rocks are from Celestia Motherlode, those are the ones that require not that much work to bring them ingame.

No. Everyone is free to use it after Diaspora R1 is out, but until then it's for team members only.

Those look like they would drastically improve with normal maps. Or if normal maps are already there, they need to be somewhat stronger.

The first shot didn't had normalmaps.

It's got something to do with the fact that they have no craters, just really weird wrinkly detailing.

Well, the creator didn't paint craters on the texture, which btw, are rather small.
I has another one, with craters and stuff, but it's a bit of a pain to add the missing smoothing and fix the mesh errors.

Well, doesn't seem fair to me to use an asset for something other than its intended debut, especially for a third-class mini-mod. :)
