Boards Stats
Total Members: 9000
We need one more member, and our total members shall be
OVER NINE THOUSAND. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiMHTK15Pik)
-
Just to prevent that happening, I've removed member accounts that haven't been activated in last 14 days. :p Down to 8940, woo!

Someone want to purge year-old, zero-post accounts to see where that puts us?
-
Purging inactive accounts with zero posts was done back in November '06. I guess it could be done again, but would require restoring post counts to GenDisc, recalculating posts, removing accounts, deactivanting GenDis post counts and recalculating posts. Meh.
-
can the board be set up to disable/delete accounts that aren't logged into for over a year?
-
And risk antagonizing people like Rga_Noris, who come back after a few years of inactivity?
Besides, doing that would cause posts from those accounts would show up as coming from "guests" which is not true.
-
Autodeleting accounts that haven't posted once after one year of activating them is the fairest I can think of. If one doesn't bother to post at least once outside GenDisc, they doesn't deserve to be here at a FreeSpace forum.
[EDIT]Reworded for clarity.
-
No way, absolutely not. We are not deleting Shrike's account, or Aldo's, or ZylonBane's, or...any of the old-timers.
People routinely post productive things after more than a year's absence.
-
Autodeleting accounts that haven't posted at all, and have been inactive for a year or longer, that's something that you could argue for, but what's the point? It's not like these accounts take up massive amounts of diskspace to keep around.

Oh okay. That sort of makes sense.

This. If you "delete" them you destoy the data, and no longer have a historical record. That's stupid.
You could just deactivate them, but to what purpose? Why are we worried about "too many" accounts, exactly?

Because some people don't want the number of HLP's accounts to be OVER NINE THOUSAND!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiMHTK15Pik)

9000+ active users is great for all; the issue is the large numbers of accounts whom's owners are not contributing in some way to the community even if it's just random comments in gen disc.

Panic over.
For the record, i'd view a deletion of this account as a major betrayal. This is part of my personal history and i've been through a lot with it.
Luckily it survived

- 9000 active users would not be great for all, it would be hell
- Deleting them accomplishes nothing
- Not deleting them doesn't hurt anything
- Inactive users would return and be annoyed that their account was deleted for no reason
-
personally speaking it has never bothered me when my account has been removed through inactivity and it has happened (once yahoo deactivated an email account of mine), a few sec of annoyance and then I'm setting my account up again. anyway as stated I'm talking about accounts that have not contributed to the community in any way.
-
Fury, didn't you say you deleted accounts which haven't been used in a 14 day period? Or by member accounts, did you mean regulars who had alternate accounts lying around?
-
No, read again.
-
Oh, activated. :D
-
It's not like these accounts take up massive amounts of diskspace to keep around.
If anything, it's the posts and attachments that take up a lot more space, in my opinion.
Deleting accounts won't change the fact that we still only have enough active HLPers to man a Fenris. :p

I call Tactical Officer!
-
/me appoints himself as Commanding Officer.
Now, Mr. SuluScotty, who will bring us donuts?
-
The next person to volunteer for a position.
-
*sigh*
I'll be the chef.

I'm interested on some trivia (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=43535.msg891319#msg891319) about activity here on HLP. The info provided by Fury over three years ago were interesting.
