Dear all,
I'm having a problem with FreeSpace 1 (original, un-modded). Has anybody else experienced this:
The ship lighting doesn't work in D3D hardware mode. (e.g. blue lights on the body of Appollo fighters, or the white window lights on Fenris or Leviathan cruisers)
If it's not clear what I'm talking about, please run FreeSpace in software mode (no 3d acceleration) and notice that some parts of the ship textures is always brightly lit even when the rest of the ship is dark (i.e. facing away from the sun).
Could you please reply if you are facing the same issue, how can it be fixed? Do I have no other choice but to install FSOpen and use the advanced ship models to get this lightign effect back?

My specs are:
WinXP SP2
Geforce 8800GT (DX9)
I never had this problem when playing FS on my old PC with 3dfx card in Glide mode. I now tried to use Zeckenseck's Glide wrapper on my new PC and played FS with Glide acceleration but the problem is still there.

Thanks & regards,
Sinick

While this is the largest FS site around, troubleshooting FS1 is not really our specialty. Please consult Goodoldgames (they have an FAQ on their site concerning retail FS1 troubleshooting).
And yes, all of these issues (and many more besides) can and will be fixed by using the FS_Open and the FSPort.

Yes, you really should just grab the latest FSOpen and FSPort builds - there's literally no reason not to these days. The original Freespace content runs pretty much flawlessly under the FS2 engine in particular, so you may as well benefit from the huge graphical enhancements this would provide.

The issue is that the NoDim flag ( $nd for those of you keeping score ) isn't being processed. I believe this is because this was only ever read and used by 3DFX cards using Glide. Since 3dfx is now out of business, it's natural that you won't get this effect.
There is something to be said for FS1... you won't really get the full experience until FSPort 3.2 is out, though. Should only be another week or so.

nglide v1.00 has fixed this issue! thanks for the technical info about the flags.
I can now play FS1 on my win-XP Geforce8800 as it used to be! :)
I'll keep checking this site for FSPort updates, too. Really want to see those original old nebulae back if possible.

FSPort 3.2 is out next week
:eek2:

Uh, yes? FSPort 3.3 (note the .3!) has been out for some time now (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76733.0). With an announcement and everything.

Note to self: double-check post dates and version numbers before trying that again...
