I already made a bug report on Mantis (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=2271), but then found out we aren't supposed to do that anymore... or something. Anyhow...
When I quit FSO, either clicking 'Exit' in the main hall or clicking the X in the corner in windowed mode, my computer gets stuck on a black screen and is totally unresponsive: I can't alt-tab or anything, have to hard reset. This happens regardless of mod, in windowed or full-screen mode. Also happens with both release and debug builds.
Here's my fs2_open.log, pastebin didn't take kindly to it...

Update graphics drivers? That's all that comes to mind...

The reason this belongs here first instead of Mantis is that Mantis is for definitive code bugs only. Only when we're absolutely sure it's not a setup issue of some kind it's supposed to go on Mantis.

Updated video drivers, same thing happens.

Can you get the root_fs2.vp from the HOTU crack pack (aka, the 1.2 root_fs2), and try with that one? checksum seems to indicate that it's not updated.
-
Replaced root.vp, problem persists.

Might give the latest nightly a shot.

Might give the latest nightly a shot.
Trying 3.6.10 would be a good idea as well.

Arrrgh, 3.6.10 crashed the same way, so I guess my install is frakked.
Here's the log if it helps: http://www.mediafire.com/?t8xobwmkp9nlalf

Axem tried helping me a bit. I turned off all launcher flags and now RC4 crashes without even getting to the intro movie. The log is strangely short: http://pastebin.org/426980

Again, it's pointing towards a driver failure more than anything else.

So, I tried running another game (Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl) and it crashed in much the same way that FSO did. Which leads me to believe this is a general hardware problem and not an FSO problem. I swapped out my video card for an older card. FSO still crashes, but does not lock up the whole computer, it's just an immediate CTD. Here's the log just for kicks: http://pastebin.org/430901
Now Stalker can get to the menu screen, but when I try to load a game (ie get to the actual 3d rendering part) it crashes to a black screen and locks up the computer.
I'm kind of at a loss now. If I had to guess, I'd say this indicates a motherboard problem.
Since this isn't specific to FSO, I'll make a thread in General Discussion. Thanks.

For the record this issue was seemingly caused by driver corruption, see http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70631.0
