Someone wrote a Descent novel. That's cool, I might get it sometime, because it's cheap (and I like Descent).

...An FS strategy guide? That'd be a cool addition to the FS Wiki... if I could ****ing afford it, it's $114.
What other strange merchandise related to Descent or FreeSpace can you guys find, besides the game itself? (Carl the Shivan does not count.)
-
The Descent novel listed there is actually the first of a trilogy. Peter Telep did a pretty good job fleshing out the games' mechanics and storyline and throwing in some colorful characters.

I just bought the FS2 Strategy guide (not the FS1 guide you linked to) for ten bucks with shipping. :D

You bastard. :ick:
You should make scans of it and post it on FSWiki.

Um. Copyright violation?
-
While it would definitely be copyright violation to just simply scan it in and post it to the wiki, I think we could get away with referencing it in the mission guides or something. Maybe add some of its comments on the ships to their pages, ala FS reference bible. Of course, I haven't actually seen the book yet - and I won't for a week or so.
-
The FS strat guides are ****e.
Complete and utter ****e.
-
I need quotes, It can't be as bad as some of the other Prima guides i've read.

*ALL* strat guides are ****e.
Complete and utter ****e.
There, fixed that for you.

I don't know what strategy guides you've looked at, but my experience is that they're not bad. I've looked at only a couple, but they're all RTS, and that may make a difference. In particular I found my Age of Kings guide quite useful.
-
I loved the old official Myst and Riven strategy guides, for what that's worth. :p
-
Old strategy guides were usually quite helpful, despite some inaccuracies. E.g., the SMRPG: LotSS guide.
-
well what do you expect from a strategy guide for open space dogfighting? it's not like they have levels, where they can tell you where to go and what to do.
-
The FS one basically explained what you would find in the mission, and the objectives, and then have a few (normally bad) tips on how to go about doing them.

Okay.
I'll translate, since I was being nice;
normally bad means HORRIFICALLY ****ING TERRIBLY, BEYOND ALL SANELY QUESTIONABLE GAMERS PERCEPTION, BAD.
-
Care to justify your statements with more than just a few strong adjectives?
-
Some Dragons will appear. Destroy them.
-
I learnt more in squadwar than any guide could ever teach me. Missile evasion, the oh so brilliant range on the maxim. Capitals triple A blind spots. (God bless rebel intercept) and all the joys of lobby_20.
-
ohhhh lobby_20
anyone remember that idiot that used to flood it with general insults? Kuras or something. or maybe most of you were gone then. i came in while everyone else was going out. i didn't recognize anyone here, other than the BDHR tag.
-
Kuras rings a bell.
Do you not remember the LOA?
Has the merch you ordered arrived yet by the way Mister original poster?
-
Kuras was the only person PXO ever actually banned.
He eventually DoSed the PXO server into going down and V never put it back up.
He's a scrote of a brat.
BDHR was probably the last active group in PXO, along with SSX and DW.
My friend has the original FS1 strat guide, I never bought it after he bought his.
And we flicked through the FS2 strat guide, it was actually worse.
-
i remember LOA, but i don't remember seeing them here. back in the final days of PXO, i was hanging around the only other FS2 community i ever knew of, the Teamwars guys consisting mainly of DW, AD (mine :)) and 2 guys from one other i can't remember (i don't think it was SSX). and AD's rather dismal failure that was Fleetwars. cool concept, but no one ever joined us.
The teamwars admins also banned Kuras from all forums and their improvised lobby after the fall of PXO, because he still couldn't stop being an ass.
damnit why did i have to miss out on the real days of Freespace multi. I'm pretty sure I flew the last ever FS1 PXO mission. it was long dead, and to be honest so was FS2 at that time, but i popped in the FS1 lobby for giggles and lo and behold, 2 guys who said they had just bought it. wasn't even a week later PXO went down for good.

Care to justify your statements with more than just a few strong adjectives?
Here, I'll provide an example:
Immediately issue an order to Beta wing, a group of Vasudan fighters, to attack the two Basilisks and three Maras escorting the Sathanas. Target the Sathanas and cycle through its turrets until you've targeted a beam cannon. Use the "Destroy My Subsystem" command on both Alpha wing and Delta wing so they'll engage the beam cannon.
Now that you've sent Alpha and Delta wing against a beam cannon, cycle the turret target (with the default K key) until you target another. Turn to the right and face the Sathanas. You'll have a direct line of fire against the targeted beam cannon. Slow down your engines to 10-20m per second, and set your Trebuchet missiles for dual-fire mode. Acquire a target lock on the beam cannon and launch your warheads.
As soon as you can send another volley, launch again (see Figure 7.1). Launch all Trebuchet missiles at one beam cannon and you'll knock it down under 20 percent. Finish it off with your primary weapons (link them for additional firepower), then target the beam cannon under attack by Alpha and Delta wing.
Time is crucial here. Alpha and Delta wing have likely put a dent into the other beam cannon, but you need to help them finish it off. If you require more firepower, use the Communication menu to prder all fighters to attack the same beam cannon. Position your ship just above the beam cannon and deploy the Helios warheads. Watch communication carefully. Command will announce that the Sathanas has powered up subspace drives. When that message appears, divert full energy to engines and use the afterburner to pull away.
Aside from the inexperienced strategy, the biggest problem with the strategy guides were that they were produced from beta versions of the game. Thus you have such surprises as thinking the Tantalus in "Clash of the Titans" will be a Cain-class cruiser. On the flip side, the guides are a good source of pre-release information for the FreeSpace Trivia (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/FreeSpace_Trivia) page.

One of my seniors made a model of the Pyro-GX that he used in some assignment. Compared to even the original fan-made Pyro-GX by Spectre, it sucks very badly.
If anyone here has FreeSpace Alpha, they should consider getting the FSPort team to port the missions over to FSPort or something.
Descent 3 is still being sold (albeit in a repackaged version) at my local retailer. Descent II was at one point too.
Kuras was the only person PXO ever actually banned.
He eventually DoSed the PXO server into going down and V never put it back up.
He's a scrote of a brat.
Ah yes, I still remember our TDiC playthrough. I assume you already have the medal for that mission, though.
-
Naturally :p
I was more frustrated for you guys than myself.
-
I have the FS1 guide, and it does have errors, the Tantalus one being the most galling. There's nothing strictly spectacular about it. I suppose as a rough guide to playing, its not bad, but it doesn't really do much else. Still glad I have it, but still.
-
I think it was needed during the FSPort team's promotional "Phoenix" alternate reality game.
-
I hoped that one person would post scans of the pages in question, and another person would solve the puzzle related to them. I was somewhat disappointed to see phreak skip right to figuring out the solution, depriving the community of a few days of sleuthing. :) He never did post the scans he promised.
