Hiya guys ;)
I've only recently heard about this game and bothered to acquire it, especially once i heard about the brilliant graphics and extra campaign work you guys are doing around here.
Now i dont know if this is something caused by the graphic packs or as a result of my download or what but essentially absolutely none of the FS2 cutscenes get shown. I didn't really notice there were meant to be any if i'm honest until at the very end of the game after fighting of hordes of enemies, i ended up just squeezing out the system and then the game gave me a screen with "no debriefing for this mission" and then sent me straight back to original menu, which made me sort of think "hang on...so wth happens after that?". Furthermore, when i go into the stored cutscenes section, where you can apparently watch them all again, they all say they cant open when i try them. I don't know how integral this cutscenes are to the game, but it would always be nice to see them.
I got my game of GOG, and immediately proceeded to download the final release off Open off the site here. So if anyone could tell me what might be wrong, or even if its a problem at all, that would be much appreciated ;)

Aha!
Good Old Game gives you the retail FS2 executable and the retail movies. The code to play those movies (in .MVE format) was owned by Interplay and removed from the codebase before it was made open source.
So, you can either play the movies using the original FS2.exe, or you can download the movies in OGG format (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.128) and play them in FreeSpace Open.
-
Absolutely fantastic, thankyou ;)

FSO does support .mve (again) as of 3.6.12, possibly .10 as well.
The problem is actually the installer from GoG, it puts the data that was on the CDs is into data2 and data3 which FSO cannot find. So if you move the contents of the data2 folder and the data3 folder to the root directory, FSO can then find and play the movies.

:wtf: Since when? AVI support was dropped, yes, but .mve? No, no no no. Otherwise numerous GOG clients would have already complained about it.

This. GOG has done this because the game originally came on several disks. Just punch the .mve files to \freespace2\data\movies and everything will work.

Galemp is right, the original source release by :v: was missing the .mve file player (see :v: release notes (check "Stuff that doesn't exist") (http://web.archive.org/web/20070102221407/http://fs2source.warpcore.org/guided_tour.txt).
That being said, I looked wayback into the historical revisions of the SCP code repo and it seems that taylor added mve support around revision 3057 (which is apparently about May 2006). Before that only .avi and .mpg was supported via DirectShow (yes, the *nix guys were sol for playing movies at that point in time). Ogg support was added December 2006, again by taylor.
-
So... the game engine doesn't have the original .mve support but it has an .mve support?
-
Yep, the mve support that was added was a reverse-engineered piece of code, not the original one.

i read the FSO FAQ, and i have the *.mve movies in the
\freespace2\data\movies\ the last movie that play is bastion dead, but
after i finish apocalype mission, its show up the debriefing "No
debriefing for mission: sm3-10.fs2 and the ending movie not play. this not
a very big problem because i play the game first on the retail version and
the movies play on it. Sorry for my english.

If you have read the FSO FAQ, why haven't you posted an fs2_open.log?

That could be a symptom of a different problem (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=450.0).
