Ok, it took me two weeks and several kitten pictures to get myself calm enough to actually start a topic for once, but what the hell.
There have been attempts to make 'Free-Form' campaigns where you can go to different systems and do whatever, but due to FreeSpace's campaign structure system, it's not exactly feasible. FreeSpaceLancer, if you will. So there I was lurking on quest.lv, thinking, why not do a FS campaign in the form of a "quest"?
For those of you that don't know what I mean, I'm imagining something like a "What would you do" thing, where members on the forum can basically vote and suggest what to do at any given point. In a sense, it'd be like writing a collaborative story of sorts, with the person(s) running the quest there to make sure it doesn't go totally wonky. The presentation method would be through single missions, released every update, which allows you to fly what most people chose to do. I'm thinking that the modpack would be extended as needed through modular tables (since there's no way to predicting exactly what will be needed).
When the story reaches its end, the modpack could be assembled, and then the missions stitched together to make a campaign (for posterity). It'd be the cumulative work of everyone who has given an idea in thread!
The benefit of this is that we get our "free-form" campaign, without having to FRED every single possibility beforehand, since the missions would be made/tested between updates (which would ideally happen weekly or something). Of course, none of this would work without the interest of the community, so this is why I'm pitching this idea to HLP, it can't be done alone.
Basically, if people are interested, I'll put up a first mission as a test run or something, and see if I can get a few people together for testing/FREDding help...
If you have any questions/concerns feel free to ask... :nervous:

Intresting, I had this idea once too, I just never did anything with it.
I for one would be interested and I think it could be a really fun experience (depending on how involved the rest of the community will get)
Freespacelancer is be possible but requires editing of the campaign file in notepad etc.

Ok.
I vote you launch from a destroyer into a civil cargo depot and omit all training. There is a node to your left. An Arcadia to your front and cargo to your right.
Your base ship is behind you. You see a letter stuffed into the front of the arcadia.

A
grue dragon appears. What do you do?
1. Shoot it with lazers
2. Run away
I am quite interested in this, and I'll be happy to play and vote. Don't have time to actively FRED or test right now though :(

Interesting idea but.....here is something for you
Bosh asks you to get him a Coffee what do you do:
A: Shoot him with your Myrmidon
B: Get him his god forsaken Coffee
C: Shoot him with your Myrmidon and then Shoot yourself
D: Fly off
Pretty stupid example if you ask me :P

Sounds fun.
Idea: We could do a quest about a GTVI task-force that has somehow misjumped into a Shivan-colonized system.

I'm curious. I suppose that counts as interest.

I don't get it. They're all .fs2 files.
Nevermind, looking at it now.

A grue dragon appears.
But is it pitch black?

Actually very easy to do, with the use of red-alert statuses, lots of lovely player-persistent variables and notepad. I nearly had a working skeleton of a free-roaming campaign before my computer died. *Facepalm for not backing up recently*.

Oh...didn't know that was possible. That's really cool.
At any rate, I'm just trying to polish off the first mission and find a few testers/helpers...

If you're looking for testers, count me in.
