Uhhhhh...so as not to make anyone angry, i've looked across the boards but I haven't seen a topic on this yet......
So let me be the first to say it.
Look at the first news item on Volitionwatch.
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/
I can't believe I'm the first guy to post this..
EDIT: OK, I realize this is yesterday's news, but for anyone who missed it....
-
wow :D
now maybe kazan doesn't have to do all that work. he can just download that.
-
:D visit the VWatch forums, they've already started
-
The forums have been shut down since before the code was released....
-
Slightly before infact - so don't think we're not interested in this event but with no forums to voice our joy over we've been kinda stuck in the mud. Things are different now though :)
-
By now I'm sure we have all downloaded the source code and have spent some time looking at it to see how our favorite game was constructed. ;) The math, physics and ai files are of the most interest to me; I only understand some of the C++ commands, but some of the routines for calculating stuff are pretty neat. ;)
I must say that I was somewhat skeptical of this ever happening and was extremely surprised (and happy :D) to see it become a reality. ;) This will make the FSF project a lot easier, since we only need to add on to the existing code. ;)
-
Add on - maybe, but I fear theres a hell of a lot of work in making the engine good. When I say good I mean taking a 5 year old engine and giving it the spit and polish needed to make it stand against the engines of today in tech specs... Still at least we have a good base!

I know this'll make me sound like a dumba** but what is this FSF?
-
Originally a project of sorts to make a replacement and newer FS2 style game engine. Now it seems it'll be a project to upgrade the now released FS2 engine's source code.
-
Did they release FRED 2's code, also?
I would've really liked to get my hands on it :D
-
I think the first thing will be to increase the MAX_SHIPS value :D
-
yup, it's all in there. :D

 Ya think?

That reminds me, anyone know where I can get a decent free C++ compiler/editor? I've been using Borland 5.5 but I've somehow misplaced my CD. Thanks.

www.borland.com. :) The Borland C++ 5.02 (I think) compiler is free now. It doesn't come with the IDE though. And if you want a compiler to play with the FS2 source, you need something that can compile MFC 6 code, (until someone more knowledgable about it then me ports it to another compiler) and the only programs I know of that can do that are Visual C++ 6.0 and up.

Thanks, thanks.

FreeSpace Forever, there's a hosted forum on it.
