Any suggestions for optimal equipment/software to record lines on?
However, one thing you shouldn't do is send in mp3s, as reconverting them to ogg is one unnecessary loss of quality we'd like to avoid. There's no worry about that from me. I can convert them directly fom wav to ogg, but as I said I don't really know much about converting, other than which buttons to hit, so I'm not sure wether that conversion would be lose quality or not. I guess I'll just send in the waves to be on the safe side then.
Any recommendation on mics, or will anything do for that?
By submitting lines you are giving us permission to use the lines without further notice to you. We will of course credit you in the credits of the mod for the lines that we do use. As such make sure you indicate in your submission e-mail that how you would like to be credited.I will be e-mailing those that have already submitted lines, informing them of the change.

* Audition lines (1 lines) (Note the audition lines are the actors entire role).

o "Acknowledged, Nelson. Civilian and personnel evac is fifty percent complete. If you can gain us twenty minutes or so, we'll be in the clear."
I would recommend converting them at something like 192 to 256 kbps, that way you won't lose any quality.Any recommendation on mics, or will anything do for that?
As long as the recording is clear, without background noise, it's good.
"Lehvenhook" would be a close approximation, I think.

# INDRA II was a fleet exercise prior to the outbreak of hostilities.
# "Excellent shooting, Ranvir. It's good to see all that gunnery drill at INDRA II paid off. We're hurting but still intact."
Tweaking is always good.
Is there anything I can do to not have Audacity make me sound like a teenager?
Will you approaching the originals voice cast who originate from HLP at all?
Well, I got over my 'sounding like a tween' complex and sent something.TBH, you sound just fine (assuming what you submitted hasn't been modified).
Let me know if there's EVP.EVP?
TBH, you sound just fine (assuming what you submitted hasn't been modified).Nope, it wasn't. I was tempted to fiddle around with the Change Tone option, though, but didn't.
EVP?
Would it be more useful if I waited for a while and tried to help clean up on some unfilled roles like last time or just took a stab at a random part now?
EDIT: If I want to send in multiple auditions, should I send them all in one email or as separate emails?Send them all together if possible, just keep in mind the total attachment size limit that I mentioned in my OP. As long as the filenames are correct, I will be able to figure out where they go.
Batutta raised a question in the other WiH voice acting thread.
Most, if not all, lines say 'male or female', as if either was fine. But what if the .ani is female and the submitted line is done by a male in a male voice? Which takes priority?
A better pronunciation guide might be nice too. Many of the character names have unclear/ambiguous pronunciation.
I'm pretty sure that was the Ironhide (which is already on the list), but correct me if I'm wrong.Fale alert.
Are we to expect feedback before Sept 30? Because at least for me, I can't do any more lines past like, next week. No, unfortunately. You will only hear from us before Sept 30th if there are technical issues with your performance or administrative problems (like you forgot to tell us how you want to be credited).
If you meant to type 'Fail alert' there, you, well, failed. But I stand corrected. No, actually I wanted to type False altert, but it seems my keyboard got hungry and swollowed the s.

# "Aside from six days' rest and a vacation in Tahiti? No. My team just finished pulling a live Helios warhead out of the Katana's flight deck. This should be a piece of piss."
You gentlemen get mine? I just sent it yesterday, so maybe not.
Definitely sarcastic.
If we are planning on using Audacity to record our lines. Do you recommend version 1.2 (the latest stable version) or the 1.3 (the beta release)?
Definitely sarcastic.
Just to clarify, as I'm still slightly confused, haha. From the context that the other lines give me, I gather that "Aside from six days' rest and a vacation in Tahiti? No." is sarcastic, and "My team just finished pulling a live Helios warhead out of the Katana's flight deck." is an assertion of his team's ability and skill, delivered confidently. But the last "This should be a piece of piss" is still unclear in my mind. Is it actually making the bomb defusal sound really easy, or is also sarcastic, implying it's a lot harder than he makes it out to be? Given the rest of this character's lines, I would be inclined to think it's the latter, but am I interpreting this right?
Duff, I actually really appreciate your accent. I think your Argent Mist was quality work, and I'd love to hear you as a Gef.Thanks man! Your words really helped. I was terribly afraid that my acting really suxx. I'm going to record some more lines ... :D
Gloire = GLOY-er?
Kyrematen = keer-REH-ma-tin?
Mr. Carl Crocker, your Captain Mence was pretty damn good. My one quibble was the pronunciation of Atreus. I think you went with a-TRAY-us, whereas it's more AY-tree-us.
MP-Ryan, very professional, very understated. Nice work. You've got a bit of a background hiss; we can clear it up in Audacity but is it possible you have a fan or something going?

Thanks.
The fan is either the PC fans, or perhaps the wind outside as I had the window open and we had a bit of a storm going. If you want me to submit any further lines, I'll try to make sure there's nothing going on... I can throttle back the GPU fan. I use a desktop mic + headphones, which is good enough for in-game communication but does pick up more ambient noise than a headset.
That's going to be about it from me for lines though, unless you fellows have any particular requests of me.

OP Changelog:
- Ensign Camerone is now female (again)...
- "Admiral Robert Byrne" and "Flight Lieutenant Manuel Brie" are now open for auditions. The current deadline for auditions for these two roles is October 2nd, 2010.
Are there any lines nobody's taken yet? The unpopular ones that have the least chance to get a good VA?As noted in the original post, we will not start casting Voice Actors for a "minor" role until September 30th. This means that none of the roles listed have been actually given to anyone yet.
The former, actually. Think of it as rhyming with 'Bev' (as in the diminutive form of Beverly).
Dropped a small load of auditions to you a few hours ago. I hope you got 'em since my GMail account has been a bit funky lately. :)
Crap...it's almost the 30th, and I still have a ton more minor roles to tackle. Get working, self!
I believe he said in the opening post that he only sends a reply if there are technical issues with the recordings.I did say that, but I have been sending emails back after I processed the email. Unfornatly I didn't get to finish yours.

I had intended to re-submit some of mine but I got really busy with RL and then got a cold. Oh well, there's always next time.I wouldn't get too stuck on the date listed for four reasons.
I had intended to re-submit some of mine but I got really busy with RL and then got a cold. Oh well, there's always next time.I wouldn't get too stuck on the date listed for four reasons.
1) The role that the recording that I sent back to you is from still needs more auditions.
2) We liked the auditions that you already submitted.
3) The date gives me an excuse to remove roles that we have plenty of auditions for, so that we can direct people at other roles.
4) The date was mostly so that people like Mongoose would hurry up and get them submitted :D Which I have to say it worked, I got a bunch of auditions fired at me today.
Basically, everyone don't despair, most of the minor roles will be extended because I don't think we have enough auditions for most of the roles as it stands right now.
Soz, when can we get a listing of which roles need more auditions?Hopefully by Monday.
4) The date was mostly so that people like Mongoose would hurry up and get them submitted :DWoo, my procrastination is so legendary that it sets policy!
That was not intended to sound like I was picking on you. After all you were not the only one that pelted me with auditions in the last week.4) The date was mostly so that people like Mongoose would hurry up and get them submitted :DWoo, my procrastination is so legendary that it sets policy!
(Along the same lines, I'll have to give Kassim a try now that my throat has recovered from that epic recording marathon.)
Don't you feel even a little bit betrayed, or perhaps manipulated? :PIsn't that the job of a coordinator, manipulate people into doing what is needed without them really realizing that said manipulation was even being done? :P

I apologize. I can find your audition email (sent September 7th), but I can't seem to find a reply to that message. Nevertheless all of your auditions are in the candidates list, so apparently I didn't have any problems with your auditions. I also have you credited for an audition for "UEF Boarding party Bravo 6" but I cannot seem to find the audition as sent to me.I have processed and sent an email back to everyone that has sent in auditions except for Mongoose as I am still processing his.I believe he said in the opening post that he only sends a reply if there are technical issues with the recordings.I did say that, but I have been sending emails back after I processed the email. !!!
Hate to be a pest, but I received no such email. Possible I sent it off incorrectly and/or the recordings sent off were useless?
Will probably drop another minor role or two in the box tonight or tomorrow, and Kassim - that looks fun!
Question about delivery: Anansi has a line here "# File: bp211s075.ogg
# "So I've heard. Your squadron already has Admiral Steele's attention, Sublieutenant...Laporte. You lot seem determined to win this war all by yourself."
why does he pause before her name, is he reading it, or pondering it? Is he suprised? without seeing Laporte's lines during the scene, it's hard to get a bead on that one.
I sort of thought that he was pausing to make sure he had the pronunciation right. :p
I sort of thought that he was pausing to make sure he had the pronunciation right. :pBut see, that's just my point - if Laporte introduced herself immediately before that line, he'd hardly have trouble pronouncing it two seconds later. But then, he mentions a bounty, too, so it's probably a pause from piqued interest.
- "Indus Tactical" and "'Ken'" are now open for auditions.
Yes. As it was explained to me, it is because "Capitan Lloyd Sorensen" is male.
- "Indus Tactical" and "'Ken'" are now open for auditions.
So indus tac is female only? damn
Will see if my mic can still crank out something nice tomorrow or so. A minor role, more if my voice works.Great! The more VA's the better.
- Updated "Kassim"'s deadline. It is now November 31st.
Yes, only the lines listed as the audition in the first post(s).
- Updated "Kassim"'s deadline. It is now November 31st.
There's much time, I guess I'll sent some lines:) Only those lines from first page of thread?
Though there are no regrets with admiral steele, whatever made him that way has taken such a perminent effect that he has become his past. He is the embodyment of mankind transformed by war with the shivans. Hardened, cold and efficient.Nice
So if I were to keep sending auditions... what would happen?Honestly. I am still working through the deluge that I got from the 30th to the 1st. If you get it in before I get to the end of the queue, well you will be in this round, if not....
EDIT: To clarify, I don't want to send new auditions if it will mess up your evaluation process, but I am more than willing to otherwise as this project has seemed to infect me.
Crap, crap CRAP! My computer decided to take a massive dump and I only just got back online. I suppose it's probably way the heck too late to audition for anything at this point?Well as I just told Bigchunk1...

I suppose it depends on what we are going to do with the evaluations this round. Personally, I don't expect any to be closed though, but we will have to wait and see.
If not, I'll do my usual thing and record everything I'm remotely suited for, with the caveat that if the GTC Duke is planned to appear in the second half or BP3, I want that. :pAs for what the future holds, I am not privy to that information. You will have to bug Battuta, The E, Darius, or any other actual team member.

Recording everything you're suited for is going to be a BIG job. I've started out doing the same thing and I'm currently at 90 lines (I'm about halfway through), not counting files that needed re-recording.I know it is. It's really not all that difficult if you just buckle down and do it, though. I'm working my way through the post from top to bottom, just got done recording for the Dea Icaunis, and set to start in on the UED Eris' wings when I get back from work tomorrow.
And those in the script are just the minor roles....
Makes you really appreciate the effort needed to get this huge project done.
Edit: Spellcheck

Not all lines in the audition are the actor's entire role.
For lines of that size we would rather have complete roles recorded.Okay, so tell us what the file names should be and we'll record them.

I can see the first post just fine; the entire point of the discussion is that the lines in question aren't in the first post. :pFor lines of that size we would rather have complete roles recorded.Okay, so tell us what the file names should be and we'll record them.
Please see the first post, each line includes a filename.
I may want to try this if I can get Cool Edit reinstalled. Then all I need is an audio converter!Use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). It will export ogg natively.
I wanna do Ken :drevil:
No need to get all horny now...
As it stand right now, all roles listed are still open for auditions.
ShuduhuneAnything special about this ones pronounciation or just pronounce it like if it was a normal english word?
'shoe-doo-hoon'QuoteShuduhuneAnything special about this ones pronounciation or just pronounce it like if it was a normal english word?
Iss, what do you say we make some provisional casting choices, and narrow down the list to just what we need?Have at it. I was looking for a way to get 120,000 characters of roles into two posts, removing some roles would solve that nicely.
email from me when I am finished processing the audition- I assume that will contain what I wish to know, yea?.
People may turn in more auditions and so roles may be shuffled around, but rest assured that almost everyone who got involved and had acceptable voice quality and delivery got a part.
Im new to voice acting and was considering trying for a few parts, just wondering. What you get back in regards of feedback/tips/etc.
Yay, impressive progress :)They are major roles, which haven't had their lines released.
What's with the roles that have no audition lines listed but are also not marked as CAST?
Like:
# Reshadiye Control (22 lines)
# Rheza Station Control (21 lines)
# Secretary-General Toqueville (2 lines)
# Sergei Gwilym (18 lines)
Reshadiye Control had a script error. The others I'm not sure. That was Reshadiye Security that was retracted, though if we need to fix Security we probably are going to need to fix something with controls lines as well.
Hey Guys,More or less, I normally only provide feedback/tips/etc if asked, but keep in mind that I am not the final stop for the use of the auditions I primarily just collect them. Also, I will *always* provide feedback on technical issues, that is, recording quality problems (noise, etc.), mispronunciation of words, clipping, etc.
Congrats on the news Ive been reading here. Cant wait to see the voices added into WiH.

A good place to start is the Tips foraspiring actors (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65794.0) thead in the voice acting forum. You might also get some tips on what to correct and how, but better to make it right in the first place, eh ;)?
I have a question - will any of the team members be contributing their own voices to the project? It's common practice for a 'small' mod in most genres, but Blue Planet is a very different animal...If any of the Team is going to contribute their own voices to the project, they will have to go through the same audition process as every one else.

Hello my name is Charles and I live near Quebec city. I'm a great freespace fan I played it all along my kidness.
I've recently come under the fact that there was an upgraded for FS2 and I played your BLUE PLANET : AOA campaign. The story is amazing , and ... alpha 1 talk yeah! No seriously , it was very good.
I see that the voices aren't all done and ... according to me a campaign is not a "real completed" campaign if there is not voice acting.
I'm here now to ask if i can help doing some voice despite my little french accent ? Is there some work left to do ?
Thanks.
Audacity works.
I want to single out for special attention and honor Mongoose, Kolgena, Renegade Paladin, and bigchunk1, who submitted a line for almost every role, including the women. You are our transvestite champions. Keep it upMan, I guess this is what I get for forgetting about this thread for a month. :p To be fair, I think a few of us got our auditions in before some of the genders were finalized.
SUP GUYS
erm. Most of you might not remember me. I do perky-pilot-who-gets-shot-down voices and I did a tiny supporting role in AoA. I regularly fall off the face of the HLPlanet to get back to my main hobby as a singer/songwriter, but one of my friends started co-spazzing about FS2 cutscenes with me and I remembered...
I will sit around & await female roles needing someone who sounds no older than 30 yrs old. :P
also, because I realize I've been AWOL-- celira at gmail, in the future.
Are you going to VA 'The Blade Itself' as well?
Are you going to VA 'The Blade Itself' as well?
Oh, ****, forgot about that. Probably should.
I still have that Ken and Gef Marine audition sitting around, but my email address doesn't like IssMneur's email, apparently. >_>
You can contact [email protected] with your questions or updates on your progress. This thread might also prove helpfull: Tips for aspiring voice actors. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65794.0)
Well, this has dragged me back to these boards! I voice-acted for Derelict (over a dozen roles, if I remember right) a few years ago now and, after starting up War in Heaven, I figured I'd love to get back into this saddle. I'd love to try out for Kassim (a role I've always loved the idea of performing!) or the Ranvir CO - according to the OP they are still available, is this correct? I'm Australian (with some theatre/drama experience!), so, I hope the accent isn't a problem! :p
Oh God, are you really Lira Yin? Wow:D I love 'Love' :Dahahaha, yeah, I am! glad you like. I hopefully have better releases coming up in the future. Small internet/world!
anywho-- been hard-pressed for free time and/or sounding dramatic without my roommate being in the apartment, but I'll try to get some lines out this week.
OT I guess works here go slowly... Will we get info from IssMneur if he choses us to voice acting? It will continue to go slowly until August when I don't have any more course work to do.
I want to single out for special attention and honor Mongoose, Kolgena, Renegade Paladin, and bigchunk1, who submitted a line for almost every role, including the women. You are our transvestite champions. Keep it up.Hey, the only reason I submitted lines for Shuduhune was that I was originally told the role was open to either gender and had already recorded for it when that was changed, so I just threw it in with the rest anyway rather than scrap the work. :P You're very welcome.
Well, I got a pirated AVS Audio Converter to convert them, but (1), it's pirated (which I really don't think you want blemishing your awesome mod), and (2) it cuts off everything after the last second (unless VLC player does that; not the converter. I wish my codecs for WMP worked...).
Can't get Avidemux to do it. It can save the audio of the .AVI, but as a "file"; no file extension at all. I have no idea what format it is, and VLC can't play it.
The VirtualDub I downloaded (hmm... you just extract the archive; not install it. Is that right?) can't play the .AVI file ("The decompression codec cannot decompress to an RGB format. This is very unusual. Check that any "Force YUY2" options are not enabled in the codec's properties"). It can export the "raw audio" as a .bin (which VLC doesn't seem to be able to play, not sure whether it's the format or the file) or .mp3 (which has been said to result in a decrease in quality which we don't want).
ImToo did the same thing as AVS, but it's shareware so as long as I don't have to record a line over 3 minutes...
I have googled ogg to avi converter, they all require a payment, or have a shareware version which has restrictions I either see or have to find out after installing the things.
-Other than a flat-out "these lines are no good", will I receive feedback on the quality of my work? When I sent my lines in I got feedback. Things like being too fast on some lines, that particular file is cut off and such.
-Any suggestions in general?
You can't sent too many roles in. There are people who did ALL the lines that were in the available scrips. I myself "only" send in 100 lines, not counting re-records, but don't ask me how many roles that is.I mean, it's more roles than I originally intended to send.
Just want to cheer you guys on - this mod deserves to be voice acted, it's so awesome yet inaccessible in its current form.Sorry, unfortunately RL has been interfering with my progress on this. If you got a receipt then I have them and just haven't got to them. I will send another email saying that I have processed the auditions (either accepted as an audition or rejected as inadequate in some way (wrong words, noise, etc.)).
How's it going? Keep it up! :D
I submitted auditions a few months ago but didn't get any response except a receipt :( I might resubmit... or will definitely look to audition some more if more suitable roles appear ( sadly I am "youngish male," presumably your most oversubscribed demographic! )
Good luck!!
I find it pretty distracting having to pause / look away from the action constantly to keep up with the dialogue and plot points throughout each mission - I'd much rather have voice acting than none at all for that reason alone. That right there. Yes.
Hello, HLP! I just wanted to post here stating that I would like to voice a minor role, but I'm unsure of which roles have already been accepted, considering the OP says most minor roles are cast. I'm new to voice-acting so I'd like to try one of the roles with 2 or 3 lines.
Also, this thread is 19 pages long :P, not sure if this has already been answered before.
I honestly don't know. I submitted my auditions over a month ago. I know they were recieved, but they still haven't been processed yet, or I haven't recieved an email about it.
No offense but maybe get somebody else to do it then if he can't handle the job at the moment?None taken, but that would be up to the Blue Planet Team. The consolation is that winter is coming, time for much work :D
They also accept .wav, though those will need far more space and thus you can't send as many at once (unless you upload them on your webspace and only send a link in the e-mail).Don't put them in a webspace for me to download. I will make you send them to me again attached to the email. If you need to send me a hundred emails so be it (though let me know before hand).
The standard party line is "More auditions are always welcome"
The software isn't as important as the format of the recordings. You should record in .ogg format. Audacity can export in this format. (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
Make sure you follow the file naming conventions listed in the original post.
Then I must have gotten that mixed up with AoA VAing... Sorry. No problem, I should really put that in the OP.
Haven't voice acted in so long, I'm getting the shakes!
Will submit some minor lines soon as I'm not in a house full of sleeping people, but my heart belongs to Noemi. <3
Omg. I'm your biggest fan. Hoping to hear your voice again in this installment (and future ones!).
Keep it up gang :)
Is there any plan to do incremental releases of the VO'd version rather than one "big bang"?
Mike
