Sara found it too while discussing Redsniper's Lego Uhlan. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71025.msg1404686#msg1404686) Totally plugging redsniper's work here.

The technique on that Dragon is excellent.

Oops. Did not see that earlier post of the lego dragon. I actually came across it by googling pictures of lego battlecruisers, one of which was made by the same dude who put together that lego dragon.

A few pages back in his gallery, there's also a fighter based on the GTF Apollo, and several MENTU fighters from Descent.

That thing is remarkably well crafted - I'd buy that kit if I could.

The one based on the GTF Apollo looks a lot like that bomber from TVWP.

I'd kill for an instruction set of that. :)

(Dear lord, the guy built a working safe (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jerac/4451437023/)! )

I think Lego's sales numbers are actually pretty good, aren't they?

And like Hades I wish they sold kits this good.

Not sure, but isn't it mostly tailored to younger audiences hence less complex kits?
Then again, they did have some pretty good, complex kits a while back.

Over-commercialization will kill them in the long run. Lego was great in its old series' as it left all the details up to the kid building it. Sure, there was the generic king, but everything else was up to the imagination. If I want to play with lego wizards, I don't need blinking Harry Potter!

Next, although some of the modern components are really cool, a lot of the old ones were equally great. Over-simplifying parts will also be a turn-off to advanced builders who need those, perhaps less durable but all the same, small, complex parts like the old hinges and whatnot.

As far as great user-made kits go, I thought they had a system a while back where you could make your own sets online and then order them, but goodness knows that's probably horribly expensive. Lego was never cheap, and now that I think of it, again, that commercialized crap isn't helping!

On a secondary note, if you need interesting parts in bulk, get a few Mega-Blox sets - that's always fun. :D

Actually, I think that make-your-own-set system isn't exorbitantly expensive, or at least it wasn't the last time I looked.  I know you can now order individual component types straight from Lego's website, and those were fairly cheap.  I never had much use for it myself, since I'm far more of the "follow the directions exactly and put the model on a shelf" than "make up your own stuff" persuasion, but it would be nice to replace a few broken elements.  Those small horizontal clips seemed to break like no other. :p

Well, the next task is to get our friend to build us a line of Lego FS ships then.

In this instance, I'll vouch for selling out to non-original theme series. :D

(Now where's my Herc II...)

This model is great. He has captured the Dragon's curves and color trimming perfectly.

I've had in mind trying out an Ursa or Hercules for some time, preferably at minifig scale. The sharp angles would lend themselves well to a Lego rendition.

This could be said 7 or 8 years ago, but there are plenty of non-licensed themes today. They have gotten back into in-house themes a lot more in the last few years.

The Design-by-Me system is still pretty expensive, although it's reasonable for small models. The best way to get parts for a larger creation is from third-party sellers on Bricklink. Most of my parts come from there these days. The PAB walls in Lego brand stores can also be good sources, depending on what their part selection is.

Look really cool and cute. I used to play Lego when I was a kid, it was very fun.

Looks like a certified Lego professional. There are like, 9 of them in the world, and they do nothing but play with Legos.

-Edit-
There we go, found a list of them. (http://www.lego.com/eng/info/default.asp?page=affiliates)

WOW that dragon is just amazing, but my favourite has to be his Starcraft Battlecruiser.
