Title: Modelling in Maya
Post by: LoneKnight on September 05, 2010, 03:37:36 pm
Hey guys, I haven't posted on HLP in several years. So long, in fact, I forgot my old username! I have recently become acquainted in modelling, particularly with Maya. I figured that there was no better thing to make models for then for FS2.

I looked around and found some discussions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52430.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52430.0.html)) about modelling with Maya, but nothing too recent. I know that 3DSMax and other programs are easier to export models from, but what is the process for exporting models from Maya into FS? I have some great ideas and concepts for ships, but some advice here would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, if Maya has a Collada (DAE) exporter you don't need anything else.

Otherwise, you're going to need to export it into some other format (3ds, obj, etc) and export to DAE through blender (or have someone else do it)

I'll check into the DAE Exporter. I've worked briefly with Blender, but am way more comfortable with it. I'll also post up images as I build them.

The focus of the ships I'm creating is on when Terrans first begin exploring space, so the ships are going to be reminiscent of FS1 style. It would conflict with canon to have them encounter the Vasudans so early on, so I'm just contemplating that this will cover the first Terran interplanetary war...and maybe the discovery of subspace.
