Title: Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the GTXF Excalibur...

Take a look guys and give me your critique. Greywolf recons the nose should be more pointy. Here's the model if you want a better look, it's in rhino3d format model (//"http://www.maeglamor.freeuk.com/Excalibur.zip")

I went for a sharkish/predator type of look in case you want to know.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

i agree, although maybe if you pointy up the nose like was suggested.  Very nice model though  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Thanks guys.

I got the Delta flyer vibe from it too and a little bit of stealth bomber  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm pretty sure I can make it a little more angry looking.

Needs one or two more fin/tail structures, or something to make it look a bit sharper and more dangerous.

Here's my humble suggestions:

I'd make the wings a bit more swept.
Add a thin, roughly triangular sweep to the underside with a base from the nose to the middle of the wings, with the tip being aboout half way between the engine and the end and a little ways down.

Add another one to the top, also thin and swept back but shorter and with a smaller base to the top, about in the middle.

The end effect should look vaguely shark-like. If that's the look you're looking for, IMO all you lack is pointiness on your wings and top/bottom fins.

Looking nice, though- the underside especially looks very well done.
Just wondering- what's your face count?

Maybe you should add a 'snarl' texture map to the nose  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)   Jhust figured out what it reminds me of -  a stingray.

I agree with Sushi, but I still maintain that the nose should be pointier.

Why not make it a real shuttle/dropship thing?  You could have a group of them flying towards a planet, blasting at crap in their way.

Because the GTXF Excalibur is the main fighter you fly in the campaign. Hell, it's the basis for the campaign.

rename this one, and give the excalibur another design?

Do you think I should make so drastic a choice? I dunno, the model hasn't had the effect I'd wished. I wanted to steer away from the norm while still building something that is both roughly terran looking and semi realistic. I pointied out the nose section and IMHO it isn't quite so asthetically pleasing. Some of you were (semi?) impressed so obviously it's not all bad.

What are you meriting it on? Asthetics, modelmaking or something else? All your ideas and views are gladly accepted.

Hey I went for something different with the Phoenix and it got mixed reviews... but, since I personally liked the idea and ship a lot, I decided I didn't care what people said. Maybe you should opt for that route.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I was saying make the nose pointier because personally I believe that right now it looks more like a transport, freighter, or perhaps even a cruiser than a fighter. Perhaps you could post pics of the new design and see what the reaction is? (Please  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))

I'm not really in a position to do that, it's basically down to Greywolf since it's his campaign it's going to be used in.

Thanks or the vote of confidence anyway   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Here's the shots though I think it takes away from the sleek look.

Elongate the pointed part so it matches rest of the design better.

Hey, I think it's neat, but you it just doesn't scream fighter to me.  You have my opinions.

I'm sorry, but that latest one you have looks to me like some form of destroyer.

How? Easy, fit on large guns on the tops and bottoms of those wings, similar to the guns on homeworld's heavy cruiser, also give the bottom section a single "stick" poping out similar to the bottom forward array on the Orion. (i.e. have such an array portrude from the bottom)

Then on the underside at the rear, have a single engine array which comes out similar to the Deimoses' (i.e. a small "box" with the engines within it replaces the round thrusters you have)

I'd make it a little larger than a Deimos, and smaller than an Orion, say 1.2-1.6km?

I hope you could do up a version based on this idea.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

No need to apologise  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
If I get time I'll see what I can do though I wouldn't hold my breath.

Jeeze, this thing is turning out to be everything but "fighter looking" if you know what I mean.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

i prefer the original - pointed version looks wrong - if you dont think its fighter enough though put 2 turrets on it turn it into a high speed bomber

Taken? By who, I thought Greywolf had checked that out. Unless he's going on "GTXF" Excalibur.

Post by: Grey Wolf on May 23, 2001, 02:16:00 pm
Taken? The only "Excalibur" I've seen in archives, campaigns, or sites was the GTXD Excalibur, which was according to the story the first Orion class destroyer with beam weapons, not a new class. Or are you talking about the B5 ship from that spinoff?

That's not important. the bad luck made that I used 2 names already used for my 2 first shivan models: chimera and scylla. I feel, like these names fitted perfectly for those ships ( the chimera monster even was a basis for the ship design with its 3 heads). If they're nou used in the same campaign as their homonymous "friends", what's the pb?

I agree that the old nose looks better- the basic hull looks fine, it just needs more features of SOME kind to look like a fighter.

Maybe a tail in the shape of a V, like the F-117(?) Stealth fighter... or put some big cannons / missile pods poking out form under the wings... just an idea.

I like the model a great deal so I'm going to build another from scratch and keep this one for something else.

Unless this will do:
Cyclone Mk. 5
 (http://www.maeglamor.freeuk.com/interceptor2.jpg)

It's an old model I've never used.

Good idea, coz this model is really nice. give it shark jaws, that would be funny   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (like on that torpedoes on the other thread)

Double this one's length and repost it. We might be able to use your other as some sort of high speed transport . . .

You people are taking the shark thing a little too literally   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I had planed to use a rather unconventional texturing scheme, you see there'd be no windows on the cockpit, all outside visuals would be provided for by cameras on the hull and the hull would have an interesting armor type of look, hence the "heavy set" appearance. The guns were going to be textures as opposed to actual model parts, keeping the streamlined look.

Also, one thing: please send me the original in 3DS or DXF format! I want to try something w/ it . . . (my Rhino3D and 3DExploration demos ran out. Anyone know of a different 3D model converter that can do double-sided faces? I'm running 3DWin righ now and it can't do that.)

No offense taken  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) I'm glad I had something that could do the job. Actually I have to commend you on a good call, I'd never even considered lengthening the ship, it looks much better.
